IN DEATHS AND RESURRECTIONS
WHAT IS COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS?
Countdown To Final Crisis (2007) continues the Countdown (2007) 52-issue weekly series. Countdown goes from issue #51 to #27 then turns to Countdown to Final Crisis till DC Universe #0. Here is the Reading Order leading to Final Crisis.
In the series, Darkseid is manipulating the 52 parallel universes in order to give rise to the Fifth World. Meanwhile, Death of The New Gods takes place during Countdown. Importantly, it is revealed that the evil New God is manipulating even the Source on a giant chessboard.
In Countdown to Final Crisis #2 (2008), Orion kills Darkseid. Let’s explain Darkseid’s death.
ON EARTH-17, THE SOURCE PROPHESIES DARKSEID’S DEATH
Return Of The New Gods (1977) was launched by Gerry Conway and Dennis O’Neil with a 1st Issue Special. However, it was cancelled after a year. The series kept Kirby’s continuity and continued its story. Notably, it resurrected dead characters such as Desaad and Kalibak. In the 1st Issue Special, Highfather learns of the cryptic prophecy of the Source saying “When son slays father chaos reigns.”1 When Orion engages Darkseid in battle, Highfather intervenes and dissuades him.
In addition, the Ruler of Apokolips continued his quest for the Anti-Life Equation. Using six captive humans, he created an Anti-Life being called the Antagonist. In addition, Darkseid became convinced that the Source held the secret of the Anti-Life Equation. For this reason, he sought to penetrate the Source Wall.
IN DEATH OF THE NEW GODS, THE SOURCE CREATES A FIFTH WORLD
Death of The New Gods is part of the Countdown To Final Crisis storyline. After the Old Gods corrupted it and split it in two, the Source sought to create a Fifth World. For this reason, it recruited Infinity-Man to kill the New Gods for the Source to be whole. In this epic, Superman and Mister Miracle must race in order to find the New Gods’ mystery killer. In the end, the Source destroys New Genesis and Apokolips and creates the Fifth World by fusing both worlds.
Readers have pointed out inconsistencies in Death of The New Gods and Countdown and critics doubt Death of The New Gods‘ canonicity. For example, Orion and Darkseid are thought to die at the end of the storyline. However, they appear again in Countdown To Final Crisis #2. Also, it appears the Source creates a Fifth World. However, in Countdown it is revealed that Darkseid is manipulating events on a cosmic chesboard. Nevertheless, Flashpoint reboots the DC multiverse and the Fourth World continues outside the DC multiverse.

ORION KILLS DARKSEID
In Metropolis, Orion arrives by Boom Tube to fulfill the prophecy. This day, the Dog of War puts an end to Darkseid‘s rampage on New Earth and the multiverse. In a duel, an all-out Orion finally rips out his father’s heart, ending him. In the end, the prophecy of the Source is fulfilled and chaos reigns with Final Crisis.
Final Crisis (2009) is what happens to the DC multiverse when the New Gods die and are resurrected. After the Source kills them, the New Gods continue their war in Heaven. There, Darkseid finally learns the Anti-Life Equation. Then, the New Gods are resurrected on Earth in human bodies. Indeed, the beginning of the end.
