Under-Appreciated Heroes/Villains: In ’Doomsday Clock,’ #WeOpposeBlackAdam’s Decision To Harbor Criminals In Kandhaq

#WEOPPOSEBLACKADAM AND ASYLUM FOR CRIMINALS

In Doomsday Clock, Prime Earth is divided by the Supermen Theory. In fact, 97 percent of metahumans on Earth are of American nationality. According to the theory, their existence is due to a superhuman arms race between governments. As a result, many nations have created their own superhuman teams. Notably, Russia has created the “People’s Heroes.” Indeed, their objective is to defend against “America’s manufactured metahumans.”1 Furthermore, the Justice Leaguer Firestorm has been angered at his purported links to the theory.

In Doomsday Clock (2018) #5, Black Adam makes a public announcement. As Batman intercepts Adrian Veidt in the Owlship, the police pursue in the air. In fact, Veidt is wanted for the purported assassination attempt on Lex Luthor. As the Owlship hurtles down after being hit, Batman watches the Black Adam report. Sinisterly, the former JSAer invites all persecuted metahumans to Kandhaq for asylum. Though a welcome gesture, we suspect it was to build Kandhaq’s own metahuman criminal army. Hence, #WeOpposeBlackAdam and asylum for criminals.

AGAINST BLACK ADAM: HE HARBORED KNOWN SUPERVILLAINS AND VIOLATED THE AGREEMENT AMONG NATIONS

In Doomsday Clock (2019) #8, Firestorm accidentally commits terror. Illegally, Firestorm enters Russia’s airspace to clear his name. When the “People’s Heroes” confront him, Ronnie accidentally turns civilians into glass. Then, he escapes. In Metropolis, Clark and Lois watch the news report. Immediately, Clark changes into Superman and heads for Kandhaq.

There, he greets Black Adam and is in search of Firestorm. Quickly, he notices the Creeper and Giganta. Clearly, Black Adam is harboring known supervillains. Sternly, Superman scolds the head of state for his breach. Specifically, it is the agreeent for metahumans to not cross any nations’ borders without sanction. In addition, Black Adam metes out justice without due process. For his part, Superman is the only hero authorized to cross nations’ borders.

FOR BLACK ADAM: HE OFFERED ASYLUM TO SLAVES ON KANDHAQ

In Doomsday Clock (2019) #8, Black Adam reveals he is also harboring slaves he freed. Among them, is a youg boy named Nabil Azmah. As a metahuman, his codename is Sandstorm. With his sand powers, the Syrian boy frees children slaves in Syria.

Though, Black Adam is not really a humanitarian nor activist. As a head of state, he defends the Supermen Theory. In fact, he claims some metahumans in Kandhaq were part of it. Certainly, he plans to raise his own metahuman army.

IN ADVANCED WARFARE

INTRO

By now, we’ve all seen the original “Robocop” released in 1987. Indeed, it was the movie that marked the decade characterized by other popular movies such as “The Terminator.”

Let’s delve into why Robocop is one of the most avant-garde cyberpunk concepts from the 80s.

clips2evoke

FRANK MILLER

Notably, Frank Miller is the quintessential American comic writer of the ’80s. Really, his body of work is both revolutionary and deconstructionist. Some of his most celebrated works include Sin City, 300, Batman: Year One and the revolutionary The Dark Knight Returns. So, when Frank Miller set out in the ’90s to work on Robocop, people took notice.

SKYNET WEAPONIZED ROBOCOP’S TECH

To begin, Frank Miller’s series brings together different elements of the Robocop and Terminator universes. There are Skynet and its Time Displacement technology, human rebels and Robocop’s brain. In Robocop vs The Terminator (1992), a female soldier in the year 2029 is sent back to the past. Incredibly, her mission is to kill Robocop. At the same time, a trio of Terminators are sent to the past on a mission to protect Robocop.

As the series progresses, we learn that Robocop’s tech is in part responsible for the creation of Skynet. From there, it is a race against time for Robocop to disable Skynet in the future and the past. Of course, in Miller’s style there is a twist at the end which will bring a dramatic resolution. Probably, this is one of the most popular Robocop stories in the medium.

ROBOCOP VS THE TERMINATOR

In Robocop vs Terminator (1992) #2, Robocop rumbles with a trio of Terminators. Since Robocop is trying to take down Skynet, he ends up fighting the Terminators. Violently, the battle spans multiple pages. And it features Terminators firing live ammunition at the cyborg.

In the beginning, the Terminators ID Robocop as their Creator. Immediately, they switch mission parameters to “terminate.”1 Soon, Robocop fights mano a mano against their leader. Then, falling through buildings, Alex ends up ripping the android’s head off. What a fitting finish!

FRANK MILLER GAVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANTED

Frank Miller.

In his review, Zac Thompson at Bloody Disgusting compares Frank Miller’s and Walter Simonson’s work to music.

If you are a music fan, discovering a book like Robocop versus The Terminator HC would be like finding out two of your favorite bands made a kick-ass record together you never heard about way back when. Add to the mix two more iconic music producers (analogy ongoing) creators in Frank Miller and Walter Simonson. This is what you could call a no-brainer if you’re a fan of even only ONE of these four icons. You literally cannot lose by reading this book. It’s perfect for a summer road trip or any other time you want to see a genuinely amazing epic this season. I honestly had no idea what to expect when I opened this book up. I am so glad I discovered this hidden gem and you will be too.

DURING THE ’60s, KHERUBIM SAUL BAXTER STOPS THE FIRST DAEMONITE ATTACK SINCE 1906

In ‘Team One: WildC.A.T.s’ (1995) #1, is the first Daemonite sighting since the 1900s. In the 1960s, Saul Baxter is a secretive defense contractor and mastermind. Secretly, he is a Kherubim and has the ability to generate blasts of mental energy. Recently, he is developing the first ballistic submarine. Suddenly, a soldier storms into his office and tells him that the submarine is under attack. Quickly, he runs out of his office and into the base. There, he finds the attacker killing several soldiers. Strangely, he recognizes the man as the first Daemonite he has encountered since 1906.

To hide his mental energy blast, Saul fires a blowtorch at the Daemonite reducing it to a corpse. When he has stopped the attack, Saul realizes that more Daemonites may arise. Soon, he meets with a fellow Kherubim. In fact, she works as a covert operative for the U.S. military as Lucy Blaise. Secretively, Saul wants to enlist a team of Kherubim heroes: Lucy’s lover and the anti-Communist John Colt, Mason and the superhero Mister Majestic. To this end, their objective is to fight Daemonites under the cover of Unidentified Life Forms (U.L.F.).

DAEMONITE LORD HELSPONT RECRUITS SLAUGHTERHOUSE SMITH ON A MISSION TO NUKE NEW YORK CITY

In ‘Team One: WildC.A.T.s’ (1995) #2, Daemonite Lord Helspont is on a mission to nuke New York City. Previously, Helspont recruited a Kherubim named Slaughterhouse Smith. As the term of the negotiations, Helspont names Smith as part of his Cabal. Sinisterly, he promises the Kherubim will rule the world.

Soon, Helspont and his Cabal attack Camp Williams, a nuclear missile silo in North Dakota. In their mission, they must detonate nuclear missiles on New York City. Angrily, Slaughterhouse protests he has a family and a home in the city. In response, Slaughterhouse’s men point their guns at him. Sternly, Helspont convinces Slaughterhouse to work for his cause.

IN TEAM ONE’S FIRST MISSION, THE MISTER MAJESTIC/HELSPONT RIVALRY BEGINS

In Team One’s first mission, the heroes are unprepared and undertrained. Decisively, John Colt leads Team One into battle. In a slugfest, Mister Majestic engages Helspont. In fact, it appears they are evenly matched. However, the heroes are soon overwhelmed by the sheer number of Daemonites. Nevertheless, King manages to reach the nuclear missile which has been set for launch.

Since he is untrained, he has no idea how to deactivate it. Begrudingly, Regiment goes to find the silo leaving King without cover. Seemingly swarmed by Daemonites, John orders Mister Majestic to blast them to cover King. Though John is in the way, Majestic blasts the Daemonites. At the end, the lights go out and the outcome is uncertain.
