Steel is in Washington D.C. and must stop a terrorist attack masterminded by Metallo. Metallo has a new body and Steel uses a strategy used by Superman in his battles against Metallo: He knocks off Metallo’s head. We will calculate Metallo’s durability in order to estimate Steel’s super strength.

METALLO’S DURABILITY

Typically, Metallo is made of an indestructible steel alloy. We will use Metallo’s feat in ‘Adventures of Superman’ (1992) #491, in order to calculate Metallo’s durability. Here, Metallo’s indestructible metal alloy upgraded by Cerberus actually reflects Superman’s heat vision.

NUMBER CRUNCHING



Metallo’s upgraded steel alloy reflected Superman’s heat vision. Typically, Superman’s heat vision reaches temperatures as hot as the sun’s surface, which is about 5520 degrees C. In real-world scenarios, since Metallo is made from a steel alloy, we can assume Superman’s heat vision here is equal or less than steel’s melting point of 1540 °C. And steel’s heat capacity is 480 J/kg °C.

In addition, we can assume Metallo’s head takes up 1.8 percent of his body mass, as in humans.

Thermal Energy = W on system = (1540 °C-20 °C)(480 J/kg C)(272.155 kg*0.2) = 39712857.6 J.

It takes more than 39712857.6 Joules of energy in order to destroy Metallo’s upgraded steel alloy. This is merely a rough estimate and it is very possible that it would take millions of degrees Celsius, a temperature matching the sun’s core, in order to melt Metallo’s upgraded steel alloy.

Our strategy is to use the Conservation of Energy to calculate the kinetic energy used by Steel’s kinetic hammer to knock off Metallo’s head from the thermal energy or work done on the system.

From 4.4: Momentum And Energy, we find:
Wonsystem=ΔKEsystem⟺FΔx1=1/2m1v12

Since the change in kinetic energy equals the work done on the system, we can calculate the impact force in the elastic collision. The elastic collision caused Metallo’s head to travel five meters from its body.

F = ΔKEsystem/Δx1 = (39712857.6 J)/(5 m) = 7942571.52 N.

Since Steel caused a deformation of Metallo’s body, we calculate the shear stress.

In terms of power output, the head knock-off generated 88542021.6202 W of power.

SUPER-STRENGTH

Steel’s kinetic hammer generated 44125397 Pa of stress knocking off Metallo’s head in an elastic collision. In order to knock off Metallo’s head five meters away, Steel had to generate a Building-Level of Super-Strength.

We will use this feat to calculate Doomsday’s durability.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

In the issue, Doomsday survives Superman’s heat vision. In Superman Unchained, it is stated that Superman’s heat vision can reach 5000 degrees Celsius, the temperature of the surface of the sun. Let’s calculate the heat energy of Superman’s heat vision.

However, there are no metals on Earth that can withstand the temperature of the sun’s surface. The metal with the highest melting point is Tungsten with 3900 degrees Celsius. We will assume Superman heated Doomsday close to that temperature to defeat it. Tungsten has a specific heat capacity of 130 J/kg°C. Let’s show the results from the Omni-Calculator.

Hence, since Wonder Woman was able to pierce Doomsday’s skin she was able to generate at least 199345250 Joules of energy. Importantly, Wonder Woman’s magical sword was forged by the Olympian god Hephaestus. Incredibly, it is able to cleave electrons off an atom.

There is a phenomenon in science called thermionic emission. Really, whenever a tungsten filament is heated to a high temperature, it may emit electrons. Here, we hypothesize that Wonder Woman’s magical sword cleaves electrons by thermionic emission. According to a book, the work function for tungsten’s thermionic emission is 4.52 eV. And 1 electron Volt is 1.60218e-19 J.

Let’s calculate the number of electrons she was able to cleave. We assume 1 eV per electron.
Wonder Woman’s Energy Projection = (4.52 eV * 199345250 J * 6.022*10^23 electrons * 415000 g * 1 mole * 9.1093837 * 10^-28 g)/(1 eV * 55*10^-5 g * 1 mole * 1 electron) = 3.7295762e+14 J.

ENERGY PROJECTION

Wonder Woman generated 3.7295762*1014 W of power in order to pierce Doomsday’s skin with her magical sword. And Doomsday can withstand Superman’s heat vision. In order to pierce Doomsday’s skin, Wonder Woman had to generate a Continent-Level of Energy Projection.

We will use Luke Cage’s durability to calculate the power of the Iron Fist.

LUKE CAGE’S DURABILITY

In Hero For Hire (1972) #1, we find out that Luke Cage has titanium steel skin from an accidental research experiment. We will use this statement to calculate the power of the Iron Fist.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

Since Luke Cage has titanium steel skin, we can compare the Young’s Modulus of both metals. To note, the Young’s Modulus is a measure of a material’s elasticity. In this case, titanium has a value of 106 GPa while steel has a value of 20*1010 Pa. Hence, steel has the higher Young’s Modulus. Since we do not know their composite densities, we will use the value of steel to estimate Luke Cage’s durability in N/m2.

Luke Cage’s durability = (20*1010 Pa) = 20*1010 Pa N/m2.

Then, we calculate the force necessary to move Luke Cage.

Iron Fist’s force = (20*1010 N/m2)/(1.98 m)2 = 51015202530.4 N.

Let’s calculate the power of the Iron Fist. We can estimate that Luke Cage went through two buildings 100 meters apart. According to Destructive Capacity and Durability, it takes 10 tons of TNT to destroy a building. Since Luke Cage toppled the second building, we are adding 4.2*1010 J.

Power of the Iron Fist = ((51015202530.4 N)(100 m) + (4.2*1010 J)/(1 s) = 5.1435203*1012 W.

SUPER STRENGTH

Hitting Luke Cage with the full force of the Iron Fist, Danny had to generate the power of a nuke. Indeed, he punched Power Man with 5.1435203*1012 W of power.

Iron Fist generated 51015202530.4 N. In order to send Luke Cage flying through two buildings, Iron Fist had to generate a City Level of Super Strength.
