5. AMANDA CONNER: POWER GIRL
Certainly, husband and wife Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner are fan-favorites at DC Comics. With their multimedia company PaperFilms, the pair have collaborated on multiple projects. Importantly, they have worked on Birds of Prey, JSA and even Power Girl. With the Power Girl: Paper Trip (2014) trade paperback, the heroine stars in her second series and first ongoing as she goes on a journey to unravel the lies and find her origin.
Positives: Husband and wife pair, successful DC ongoings, comedy and emotional resonance.
Negatives: Art may seem too kid-friendly, teenage-oriented, not enough promotion.
4. NICOLA SCOTT: TEEN TITANS
In 2005, Wizard Magazine listed the Australian artist as a “Talent to Watch.” Nicola Scott broke into the comic world with her collaboration with Gail Simone on Birds of Prey and Secret Six. In 2010, she jumped onto Teen Titans #88, which she drew till issue #100. Since she has worked on high-profile projects and has worked on Wonder Woman with Greg Rucka since DC Rebirth. With Teen Titans: Prime of Life (2012), Scott begins her exploration of magic and the supernatural with more mature, serious and musucular Titans.
Positives: Creative, ground-breaking artists, high-profile collaborations, more mature themes.
Negatives: Penchant for the dramatic.
3. GAIL SIMONE: WONDER WOMAN
Perhaps, no contemporary woman writer is as popular as Gail Simone. Certainly, a household name in popular culture who has worked on the Simpsons and Heroes. Brilliantly, she helped revamp Birds of Prey and the Secret Six. However, her run at DC Comics has given us one of the most popular Wonder Woman storylines to date. With her run on Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman: Contagion (2010), the writer takes fans on a thrilling ride in an exploration of Greek mythology and modern superheroes.
Positives: Popular status, popularized female superheroes and villains, mythological and romantic.
Negatives: More DC appearances are needed.
2. JILL THOMPSON: SANDMAN
On his list of the Top 25 Female Comic Book Artists #6-4, Brian Cronin lists Jill Thompson number 4. Certainly, DC’s Vertigo line of comics covers avant-garde themes, the supernatural and highly conceptual entities such as the Endless. Indeed, Jill Thompson’s art is itself surrealistic with a level of detail that caters to a more mature audience. And her work on The Brief Lives (1994) is itself legendary.
Positives: Legendary artist, work on Vertigo line, two Eisners for Best Painter.
Negatives: Suitable only for mature audience, few DC comics credits.
1. LOUISE SIMONSON: SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL
Gloriously, Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanovic worked together on Superman: The Man of Steel from 1991 to 1998. Particularly, the era produced some of the best Superman action and she collaborated on The Death of Superman. Certainly, a household name, a professional and a writer who knows how to entertain fans.
