In Fantastic Four (1981) #235, titled “Four Against Ego!”, Thing performs a super-strength feat. And in order to avenge his defeat, Ego The Living Planet is headed for Earth. In space, the Fantastic Four intercept him, but Ego attacks them and they land on the planet’s surface. During the battle, Thing transports a bomb which Mister Fantastic fashioned out of one of Ego’s propulsion device’s jet packs.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

From Marvel Universe: The Appendix! and Marvel Database, we learn Ego has gravity similar to Earth with a diameter of 6701480 meters. Also, we will assume Ego has the same mass as the Earth of 5.972*1024 kg and that the conditions below the planet’s surface are similar to Earth’s.

According to geologists, three miles below Earth’s surface, the temperature is 75 ºF. However, for every mile below, the temperature increased by 15 ºF and the pressure increases at 7300 pounds per square inch.

Let’s calculate the mass of the propulsion jet. From Silver Surfer, ‘Silver Surfer’ Vol 3 22, we calculated their thrust to be 5.858532e+25 N. Since there are two jets, we divide by two. Also, Ego reaches hyper velocities in space which are around 1000,000 m/s.

First, let’s calculate the mass of one jet.

Gravitational binding energy = U = (3/5)(GM/R2) = (3/5)(5.972*1024 kg * 6.674×10−11 m3⋅kg−1⋅s−2 )/(33507402 m) = 4.2622245e+32 J.

KE = U = (1/2)(Mv2) = (2KE/M)^(1/2) = ((2 * 4.2622245e+32 J)/(5.972*1024 kg ))^(1/2) = 11947.3960036 m/s.
