THE MOST POWERFUL MYSTICS IN ANIME
For our very first Anime/Manga article, we compared Goku and One-Punch Man. For dedicated fans, who have been following the media, manga and anime produce some of the most gravity-defying and exhilarating fights in all fandom.
In today’s article, we compare two mystics that are the best in terms of fighting spirit, character, friendship and yes… techniques!
Though both universes have never met, what would happen in a battle between the strongest Avatar, Aang and the strongest hokage, Naruto?
Really, both are A-list heroes in their respective universes. Namely, the iconic Aang appeared this week in the Avatar: The Last Airbender (2004) live-action series on Netflix. For his part, a live-action Naruto movie is planned by Destin Daniel Cretton who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).
Though both heroes have shown gravity-defying attacks, let’s compare their strength in terms of fighting villains. Hence, we compare Aang in Avatar State vs Naruto in Ashura Mode.
KI AND POWER LEVELS
Generally, the concept of power levels understood scientifically or physically is not useful in anime and manga. In fact, this is due to the concept of ki.
In anime and manga, characters’ strengths are not dependent on how much physical strength they can exert, or how much they can lift. Instead, they depend on their ability to use their natural life force for devastating attacks, super speed or abilities such as flying.
In many respects, these are an application of martial arts and Chinese philosophies to the arts of fighting and war. For these reasons, we compare these warriors in terms of formidability.
FORMIDABILITY
Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy.
For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Level. For example, this explains why Batman is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful.
Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.
Before we rank our two heroes, let’s list some rules.
- First, the hero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
- In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
- Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
- Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.
First, we will compare them in Class, Weaknesses, Quality Opponents and Limitations. Then, let’s rank Aang in Avatar State vs Naruto in Ashura Mode in Formidability. To note, all scores are rated out of a 100.

1. STRENGTH CLASS
Generally, Aang is among the strongest of the Avatars. In fact, as an Avatar, he possesses the power to bend air, water, earth, fire and energy. Importantly, he seeks to end the Hundred Years War started by the Fire Nation and bring peace between the Fire, Earth, Water and Air Kingdoms.
At the same time, it seems his power can be measured directly in terms of concussive force and weather phenomena. Certainly, at base level, Aang’s air-bending is Building-Level in Energy Projection.
However, in the Avatar State, he is capable of incredible feats of strength and is comparable to Kyoshi who could move an island mass thousands of meters. Definitely, his Class is at least Continent-Level to Planetary-Level.
On the other hand, Naruto seeks to become the most powerful Hokage and protect his village. Incredibly, Naruto uses his chakra and the Nine-Foxed Tail to go through powerful transformations that exponentially increase his Strength-Level.
Though, Naruto does not display many lifting feats, his striking strength in Ashura Mode is Mountain-Level and higher. In Sage mode, Naruto can at least move an island. Definitely, in Ashura Mode, Naruto is at least Mountain to Continent-Level.
And when Naruto unleashes his Ashura Mode against Sasuke’s Susano’o, it is the entire mountain that is destroyed. At hypersonic speed, both fighters unleash destruction on the countryside.
ADVANTAGE: AANG
2. WEAKNESSES
For the most part, Aang’s main weakness has been his cycle of reincarnation. As the Avatar, he incarnates in a different person each age in a new cycle of reincarnation. At the same time, he has access to the knowledge of the previous Avatars.
However, if Aang is killed in the Avatar State, the cycle of reincarnation is broken and he can no longer reincarnates in a new person. Hence, this explains why the Avatar State can be both powerful and unstable for Aang.
Generally, Ashura Mode Naruto has few weaknesses that his adversary can exploit. In fact, he is able to react at lightning speed and counter Sasuke’s every move. Perhaps, due to its vicious nature, the Ashura Mode creates immense collateral damage.
With more mastered techniques and transformations, Naruto is simply the smarter fighter who can identify his opponent’s weaknesses. At the same time, his over-confidence and naivety can prove a problem in battles.
Overall, Naruto has a slight advantage in terms of Weakness but his lack of discipline and concern for collateral damage are a problem.

3. QUALITY OPPONENTS
Perhaps, the most clear area to consider. Aang’s most dangerous foes tend to be either firebenders or Fire Lords like Lord Ozai. At the same time, Aang’s incredible power allows him to fight entire armies and even elemental powers.
Though their physical strength is often around Peak Human, their Power Level or ki tends to be around Metahuman to City Block-Level. In terms of Power Level, Aang’s strongest opponents are around Team-Wrecker to Champion.
In comparison, Naruto seems to face more powerful foes on the Power Hierarchy. In fact, in Six Paths Sage Mode, Naruto is able to face Kaguya, who became near-god when she ate fruit from the God Tree.
Importantly, she is capable of interstellar travel, manipulating the elements, erasing memories, reading thoughts and absorbing chakras. Definitely, on the Power Hierarchy, she is at least Cosmic Being-Level.
Overall, Aang needs more experience to fight higher Quality Opponents at the Cosmic Being-Level.
ADVANTAGE: NARUTO
4. LIMITATIONS
Really, both heroes are astoundingly powerful and strong. Though Naruto seems to be stronger and a Cosmic Being, we think Avatar has a higher potential as a mystic.
With Ashura Mode, Naruto manages to become Hokage, save Sasuke and protect his village. At the same time, Avatar is the better mystic for operating at a higher scale. In the end, Aang puts an end to the Hundred Years War and unites the Four Nations.

VERDICT:
Though Naruto is a Cosmic Being in the Power Hierarchy, Avatar has brought peace to the Four Nations and Naruto only protects his village. As a Mystic, Avatar has the higher potential and achievements.
Avatar wins.
