IN BEST OF THE YEAR
WE NOMINATE THE #BESTOFTHEYEAR
In Le Chat du Rabbin (2011), a rabbi’s cat living in Algiers in the 1920s wants to have a Bar-mitzvah. Previously, he ate the rabbit’s parrot and developed the ability to speak. In a fairy tale, he falls in love with the rabbi’s daughter and seeks to convert to Judaism.
In fact, it’s the animated adaptation of Joann Sfar’s 11-issue comic book series. And we learn about Sephadic Jewish culture and colonial Africa. Certainly, we nominate Le Chat du Rabbin, winner of Cover of the Week in Comic-Con Trends, as Best of the Year.

FOR THE CAT: HE IS THE NARRATOR
The cat narrates the journey to becoming Jew and finding love. And he speaks to humans and animals alike. Sometimes, he loses the ability to speak.
However, he narrates his experiences with humans and his criticisms of culture. With the cat, we see a non-human perspective on Africa.

AGAINST THE CAT: HE LIES
Previously, the rabbi wants to protect his daughter Zlabya from the cat. Indeed, the cat says hurtful things and lies.
Hence, we question whether Joann Sfar’s narrator is trustworthy and says true things about colonial Africa.
