IN VISUAL ARTS
In our article, we list two French BDs that were faithful of Cannes movies that appeared at the prestigious Cannes Festival in France. BE NATURAL: L’HISTOIRE CACHÉE D’ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ (2018)
Certainly, the Cannes Film Festival touts itself as a celebration of cinema worldwide with a conscience. Indeed, the festival is very selective though it celebrates visionary filmmakers and talented actors. Moreover, they have militated for a greater recognition of women in cinema. With Be Natural : L’histoire cachée d’Alice Guy-Blaché selected for L’Oeil d’Or, we celebrate the first French woman filmmaker in cinema. Importantly, Catel et Bocquet’s BD is a homage to the life of Alice Guy.

Positives: Pioneer filmmaker, 2018 Cannes Film selection, faithful homage to documentary.
Negatives: Not enough fame for the filmmaker.
LE NOUVEL HOLLYWOOD (2016)

Importantly, Hollywood cinema has been well represented at Cannes. In fact, the Vietnam-era wave of filmmakers may be the most celebrated at the festival. In 1976, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976) won the Palme d’Or. Though responses were favorable, it promoted the wave of violent cinema called The New Hollywood. In La petite Bédéthèque des Savoirs – Tome 7 – Le Nouvel Hollywood. D’Easy Rider à Apocalypse now, Jean-Baptiste Thoret et Brüno chronicle the new wave of cinema with criticism and illustrations. Enjoy!
Positives: The New Hollywood style that changed cinema, Iconic filmmaker won Palme d’Or at 1976 Cannes Film, Iconic actor, Homage BD by legendary historian and artist.
Negatives: None.
