Slyly, Clark Kent changes into Superman and flies to the scene of a fight between Hulk and Metallo. On the scene, Superman and Hulk are teleported to the Grand Canyon to do battle.

The fight starts out with Hulk punching Superman in a surprise attack. Superman hits the ground, comes back and hits Hulk with a dose of heat vision.

THE ART

To begin, the art is pure Dan Jurgens. The artist, writer, creator rose to fame with his incredible work on Superman in the 1990s and with the soft revamp Zero Hour. In Death of Superman, Jurgens’ curvy lines and strong musculature create kinetic panels.

THE FIGHT

In DC Universe vs The Masters Of The Universe (2013) #2, Skeletor and Black Alice come to Prime Earth to drain it of its mystical life-force. Skeletor attacks the Justice League satellite and using magic turns them into his “minions.”

The Justice League “minions” attack John Constantine, Batman, He-Man, Teela and company at the Batcave.

A battle to the death ensues between Superman and He-Man.

What a battle! It turns out the Superman He-Man killed was actually a facsimile. The real Superman, was being imprisoned on the extra-dimensional world of Trolla, by Orko.

In DC Universe vs The Masters Of The Universe (2014) #6, He-Man rescues Superman from Trolla. An all-out battle between Orko’s minions and The Masters Of The Universe and the DC Universe ensues.

Wonder Woman intervenes and re-directs Darkseid’s Omega Beam. After removing Wonder Woman from the battlefield, Superman dials up the gears. He takes Darkseid to the sun. Both characters trade haymakers near the sun. Finally, Superman gets the upperhand with three punches in the sun.

‘Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen’ (1970) #134, titled “The Mountain Of Judgment!”, marks the first cameo appearance of Darkseid in DC continuity. Superman foils a bomb attack on the Hairies, Jimmy Olsen and the Newsboys. The attack was from Morgan Edge who received orders from Darkseid.

The issue was created by Jack Kirby and Neal Adams.

THE ART

In comicdom, John Byrne is a legendary artist. In the 1960s, his work on Silver Surfer is an all-time fan-favorite. Really, Byrne’s classical training is evident in his anatomical correctness and his realistic landscapes. When Byrne moved to DC in the 1990s, he did some important work on New Gods and here the crisis-preparing rumble between Superman and Black Adam.

Byrne’s pencils show a nice evolution from his classic work. Here, there is less emphasis on scenery and more on action. The detailed backgrounds are gone, and there are more close-ups and punches! Certainly, DC’s superheroes tend to be more hands-on. Importantly, Superman is first of all, a flying brick! Check out How To Draw Comics #1 by John Byrne, John Romita Jr and Allan Fromberg.
