DC Day: This Month, in the History of the DC Universe, the Flashes Outrace the Black Racer and the Omega Effect Killing Darkseid

DC DAY

Flashback FM

IN FRANCHISES, COMIC VALUES AND COLLECTIONS

In 1986, DC Comics published History of the DC Universe. Importantly, the comic changed continuity and introduced a single, unified DC Universe with a shared history. In addition, the DC multiverse was erased from continuity with the five remaining Earths after Crisis On Infinite Earths merging into New Earth. In the Pre-Crisis universe, DC Comics introduced Darkseid as a Superman villain.

This March, we remember the death of Darkseid in the iconic event Final Crisis #7. Today, we celebrate Final Crisis and major character deaths.

THE FLASHES AND BLACK RACER KILL DARKSEID

Perhaps, Final Crisis (2009) #7, is the most cryptic of the Morrison saga. Though the Supermen of the Multiverse save the DC multiverse, there are some loose ends that need resolution. Moreover, the comic is set in the Post-Crisis continuity though it anticipates the New 52. Importantly, the comic features the infamous death of Darkseid killed by Barry Allen, Wally West, the Omega Effect and the Black Racer. And after Boss Dark Side is shot by Batman’s radion bullet. Certainly, that is the reason how according to Comichron the comic performed with 109,400 unit sales in the year 2009.

DARKSEID KILLS BATMAN WITH THE OMEGA EFFECT

Certainly, the major death in the entire series. With a move that no one sees coming, DC Comics actually kills Batman. After Dick Grayson survived Infinite Crisis, it was time for a Bat-family member to die. Perhaps, the death is not a major news sensation though a very significant event in comicdom. In Final Crisis (2009) #6, the DC multiverse is at stake.

THE DEATH OF ORION IS FINAL CRISIS‘ MURDER MYSTERY

Importantly, Final Crisis is a murder mystery. Incredibly, Morrison weaves a threaded tapestry of gods, heroes and villains where the murder of Orion is the impetus for the conflict. Certainly, Final Crisis (2008) #1 is at number 9 on 2008 comic book sales to comic shops. In addition, in a death that angered fans, the Martian Manhunter also dies tragically.

THE MONITOR RACE IS ERASED

In Final Crisis (2009) #7, another major series of deaths occurs. With the passing of the multiverse, the Monitors are erased from existence. Perhaps, a warning that DC intended for Final Crisis to end the idea of a multiverse. SEE my ebook for more information.

This January, Crisis On Infinite Earths (1986) #10 was published. Today, we celebrate the Arrowverse crossover (2020) with the comics it was based on.

*Product images vary from actual products.

THE MONITOR’S INTRO IS BASED ON HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE

The Arrowverse (2020) crossover starts with a bang. Certainly, the Monitor’s introduction of the Crisis traces the Big Bang, to the creation of the multiverse to the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Similarly, it recalls Harbinger’s iconic introduction of the destruction of the DC multiverse and the new DC Universe in History of the DC Universe (1986) after the Crisis.

THE ARROWVERSE EVENT IS BASED ON THE ICONIC CRISIS

In five parts, the CW told the story of the Monitor and his quest to stop his opposite, Anti-Monitor, from destroying the DC multiverse. While the events and the outcome differ from the source material, the concept is similar since many characters die and a new, unified universe is created.

IN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD, THE HEROES MUST PROTECT THE BOOK OF DESTINY

Moreover, the Arrowverse crosover includes an element that is missing from the graphic book: the Book of Destiny. In The Brave and the Bold: The Lords of Luck (2007), Mark Waid and George Perez tell an important story. In the story, the cosmic being known as Destiny, recruits different DC heroes known as Challengers to protect the book of Destiny. Similarly, Monitor learns about the Paragons from the book of Destiny in the show. Visit this article on CBR.com for more information.

THE ENDING PROMISES A REBIRTH

At the end, the DC multiverse is destroyed and a shared universe is created. However, instead of New Earth, Earth-Prime is created in the CW show. In fact, when Oliver Queen sacrifices himself to save the new universe, he promises a Rebirth. This is a reference to DC Rebirth (2016) in the comics, that revamped the DC Universe with a shared reality on Prime Earth.

IN A FORBIDDEN EXPERIMENT, KRONA WITNESSES THE HAND OF CREATION

After Crisis On Infinite Earths, a new single DC Universe is created. In History of the DC Universe, Harbinger gathers data on the Monitor’s files in order to tell its history. In the beginning, a single universe was created. When the universe was young, the earliest race was the Maltusians. These tall, blue-skinned beings lived on Oa and soon mastered science. With their civilization, they studied the universe. According to legend, no one could behold the beginning of the universe.

Or else, calamity would follow. A daring and defiant scientist, Krona defied the legends. With his powerful machine, he peered back in time. Then, he showed his discovery to the Maltusians. On that day, calamity ensued and Krona was struck by a lightning bolt. Dramatically, the accident created the anti-matter universe opposite to the positive matter universe. And the multiverse was born. With the birth of the multiverse, evil entered the DC universe.

IN READING GUIDES, LISTS, REVIEWS

In Green Lantern: Ganthet’s Tale (1992), Ganthet tells the origin story of the Guardians of the Universe. Let’s list five common myths about the Guardians of the Universe in ascending order.

5. THE GUARDIANS OF THE UNIVERSE FIRST CREATED THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS

In History Of The DC Universe (1986), Harbinger records data on the Monitor’s files after Crisis On Infinite Earths. On Oa, Krona’s forbidden experiments led to calamity.

As a result, the Malthusians became the Guardians of the Universe to combat the evil in the DC multiverse. Originally, it is a myth that the Guardians first created the Green Lantern Corps.

The Guardians saw it as their responsibility to safeguard the multiverse from the evil that one of them had created. At first, they experimented on genetics in order to create “the perfect warrior”. They created a race of “genetically transformed lizards” known as Psions which was a failure.

Afterwards, they created the Manhunters, “a corps of android soldiers” whose purpose was “to combat the evil”. In the end, the Manhunters rebelled and “their legions disbanded”.

The Guardians of the Universe finally met success with the Green Lantern Corps. They harnessed the energies of the Emotional Spectrum from the emotional energy of will which the Guardians of the Universe stored in the Central Power Battery on Oa. It was to create green power rings to equip “the bravest from each sector of space”.

4. THE GUARDIANS ARE LITTLE BLUE MEN

Generally, one popular depiction of the Guardians is as serious little blue men. Though this is their current incarnation, it is a myth. Originally, the Guardians are from the planet Maltus. Possibly, the first life-forms in the DC Universe. At the beginning, they were tall blue humanoids with dark hair. At first, they engaged in constant war. Later, they began to study science and became scientists. In History Of The DC Universe (1986), Harbinger tells of the origin of the multiverse.

After Krona’s experiments on the beginning of time, the DC multiverse was created. Hence, evil emerged in the universe. In order to combat evil, they relocated to Oa, the center of the DC multiverse. They became the Guardians of the Universe. With their immense powers, they sought to bring order to the universe. Particularly, the Guardian Ganthet has the power of size alteration. When he appears with the Quintessence, he appears as a giant blue man.

In 'Justice League' (2020) #39, Ganthet appears as a giant blue man along the Quintessence.

3. THE GUARDIANS ARE WEAKER THAN MAGIC

In Tales Of The Green Lantern Annual (1986) #2, the Guardians of the Universe tame magic. To begin, GL Abin Sur is above the planet Ysmault. Curiously, he inquires information from his ring about the planet. Millennia ago, as the ring tells, it was the throneworld of the Empire of Tears. At the time, the Empire of Tears spanned three galaxies. In fact, it reigned supreme and its “regents” committed abominations.1

In the early universe, magic was a powerful and chaotic force. Newly formed, the Guardians sought to create order. On the planet, they arrived and defeated the demons. Powerfully, they chained the disembodied minds on Ysmault. In this way, they turned it into a corpseworld. After the war, the Guardians gathered the mystical forces of the universe in an orb called the Starheart. Over the ages, its fragments fell to Earth. Eventually, it became the JSA’s Alan Scott’s ring. Thus, it is a myth that Guardians are weaker than magic.

A FAN OF THIS STORY? CLICK ON Green Lantern: Ganthet’s Tale BELOW TO BUY THE COMIC ON AMAZON.

2. THE GUARDIANS ARE AN IMMORTAL RACE

Really, the Guardians are an immortal race from Oa. In fact, they may be as old as the DC Universe. And they have lived for billions of years. Though they are effectively immortal, Guardians can die. In Green Lantern (1994) #48, Hal Jordan is driven mad by the destruction of Coast City. At the orders of Cyborg Superman, Mongul used Warworld to annihilate it.

In Green Lantern (1994) #50, Hal Jordan becomes pssessed by the demonic entity named Parallax. Terribly, the Green Lantern has defeated the Green Lantern Corps. On Oa, he heads for the Central Power Battery. As a last ditch effort, the Guardians sacrifice themselves to create the most powerful power ring. Only Ganthet survives and he teleports away to seek the Last Green Lantern. As it turned out, it was struggling L.A. artist Kyle Rayner.

In Green Lantern (1994) #50, Ganthet is the last surviving Guardian of the Universe.
In Green Lantern (1994) #50, Ganthet is the last surviving Guardian of the Universe. DC Comics.

1. THE GUARDIANS DON’T FEEL EMOTIONS

Eventually, the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps do come back. After a battle with Ion, Hal Jordan resurrects them with a wish. Nevertheless, they remain as detached and manipulative as before. Peculiarly, a characteristic of the Guardians is to be above emotions.

Ironically, they forged the most powerful weapon in the universe using willpower. In Green Lantern (2007) #22, Sinestro tells Kyle that the Guardians actually feared emotions. Millennia ago, they sought to control the fear entity, namely Parallax. Eventually, this gave birth to the yellow impurity.

In Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special (2007), Kyle Rayner meet the parasitic entity named Parallax.

DC Day: Green Lantern Corps

Today, we talk about the Green Lantern Corps! The Green Lantern Corps is an inter-galactic police force set up by the Guardians of the Universe.

The origin of the Green Lantern Corps is told in History of the DC Universe. Following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Harbinger gathers data on the Monitor’s files in order to tell the History of the DC Universe.

We begin our story with scientist Krona on the planet Oa at the beginning of the young universe. Despite legend that attempting to discover the origin of the universe would lead to calamity, Krona did experiments on the origin of the universe. He showed results to the Guardians on Oa and calamity ensued.

“…and the Universe exploded.”

This led to the creation of the positive matter and the anti-matter universes: a multiverse.

“-and with the unleashing of the anti-matter universe there came a wave of evil that spread throughout fifty million worlds, corrupting what had been a paradise.”

(History of the DC Universe #1)

The Green Lantern Corps is directed by the Guardians of the Universe and derives its power from the Central Power Battery on Oa. Each green lantern is given a green power ring and is tasked with re-charging it after a 24 hour day with a power battery or the Central Power Battery on Oa. The green lantern is tasked with a sector of space which he or she patrols. There are 3600 space sectors.

In 'History of the DC Universe' #1, the Manhunters rebelled and "their legions disbanded".

The green lantern power rings have great power and have been described as “the most powerful weapon in the universe“. They have the ability to generate green light constructs based on the wielder’s willpower. The power rings can also create energy blasts, detect energy signatures, protect its wielders from the rigors of interstellar travel, and generate a protective aura around the green lantern, finally, enable to translate all languages and have access to the Central Power Battery on Oa, a computer in this regard.

The green lantern power rings enable the green lanterns to perform super feats such as Kyle Rayner holding Solaris the solar computer in a green light construct “plasma bottle” in the 853rd century in DC One Million with the help of Superman One Million’s force vision.

SUPER FEAT: In ‘DC One Million’ #4, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner holds Solaris in a plasma bottle helped by Superman One Million’s Force Vision.

Hal Jordan of Earth, Space Sector 2814, is regarded as one of the most powerful green lanterns of the Green Lantern Corps, or at least its greatest. His willpower is unrivaled and his power is immense, as well as his heroism.
