SPECTRE IS THE SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE OF THE PRESENCE

Spectre (Aztar). DC Comics.

In More Fun Comics (1940) #52, the Spectre made his first appearance in the Pre-Crisis continuity. In the origin story, the Spirit of Vengeance is a New York City police officer named Jim Corrigan.

As the Spirit of Vengeance, the Presence tasks the Spectre with exacting vengeance on evil men. Moreover, Spectre is a founding member of the Justice Society of America. The JSA makes its debut in All Star Comics (1940) #3.

In Crisis on Infinite Earths (1986) #10, Spectre makes a surprise appearance. After the heroes destroyed the Anti-Monitor’s antimatter cannon on Qward, Anti-Monitor goes to the beginning of time, in order to destroy the positive matter universe.

However, the outcome turns out completely different with a new universe created. Really, Spectre is dependent on the Presence and is as strong as the being allows him to be.

OVERPOWERED, SPECTRE CAN CREATE A UNIVERSE

In Crisis on Infinite Earths (1986) #10, only five Earths remain after the destruction of the multiverse: Earth-One, Earth-Two, Earth-Four, Earth-S and Earth-X.

In a final attempt to destroy the positive matter multiverse, Anti-Monitor time travels to the Dawn of Time. There, he intends to view the beginning of time and destroy all reality.

At the Dawn of Time, the heroes and the mages of the DC multiverse are assembled to stop the enemy. There, Spectre appears, channels their combined powers and reaches into Anti-Monitor’s Hand of creation.

Though he fails from preventing Anti-Monitor to contemplate Krona‘s experiment on the DC Universe, he nevertheless succeeds in creating a new universe. With his reality-warping powers, Spectre dies and creates the New Earth continuity.

In this comparison, with the power of five Earths, Spectre is evidently Multiversal-Level in Energy Projection, and ranks below the Source.

Some of Spectre’s powers include: Nigh-omniscience, energy projection, dimensional travel, immortality, flight, intangibility, metamorphosis, super-strength, size alteration and reality-warping at the Multiversal-Level.

PHILOSOPHICALLY, SPECTRE IS GOD’S WRATH

In Day of Vengeance (2005) #2, Spectre confronts Eclipso. DC Comics.

Philosophically, Spectre is God’s Wrath. In DC Pre-Crisis mythology, Spectre is a fallen angel named Aztar. After the fall of angels, he repented before Heaven, and the Presence erased his identity, bonding him to God’s Wrath.

Since Spectre is a ghost and has no memory of his evil past, he needs a human host in order to help him exact the Vengeance of the Presence. Regularly, Jim Corrigan is the most common Spectre human host.

In Day of Vengeance (2005) #2, Eclipso, who is also an aspect of God’s Wrath convinces Spectre that the cause of evil in the DC Universe is magic. Moreover, the Guardians of the Universe had to contain magic with the Starheart, in order to bring order to the universe.

After, Spectre goes through the DC Universe destroying magic, eventually going mano-a-mano against Captain Marvel.

In a philosophical sense, Spectre is God’s Wrath because he seeks vengeance for evil in the universe. Also, he seeks redemption for his own past.

WHY SPECTRE IS AN OVERPOWERED BEING

HIS OMNISCIENCE EXTENDS TO THE OMNIVERSE

Perhaps, Spectre’s most impressive feats occur in the fan-voted DC Versus Marvel (1996) inter-company crossover.

In Marvel Versus DC (1996) #2, the two Brothers representing both franchises awaken to renew their abstract battle. To find out whose universe survives, their heroes must do battle.

In the issue, the Spectre and Living Tribunal both use their nigh-omniscience to see beyond and over to the Omniverse.

SPECTRE IS TOUGHER THAN BRONZE AGE SUPERMAN

In DC Comics Presents (1981) #29, Spectre faces the might of the Bronze Age Superman.

When Supergirl goes missing, Superman searches the entire universe. At superluminal speed, he even breaches the bounds of infinity.

To prevent him from entering Heaven, Spectre confronts him. In a classic battle, an all-out Superman delivers a powerful punch that creates a crater.

However, Spectre does not move at all and is unfazed by Superman’s might.

Considering Superman’s punch shook mountains, and is likely at least a Magnitude 5.0 earthquake, Spectre’s base durability is at least City-Level.

IN EXTINCTION

J’ONN J’ONNZ IS THE LAST SURVIVOR OF MARS

In Detective Comics (1955) #225, Dr. Erdel accidentally teleports J'onn J'onnz to Earth.
In Detective Comics (1955) #225, Dr. Erdel accidentally teleports J’onn J’onnz to Earth. DC Comics.

During the Silver Age, Martian Manhunter debuted. Over the years, Martian Manhunter’s super powers expanded. In The Brave And The Bold (1960) #28, Martian Manhunter joins the new Justice League of America. In later stories, Martian Manhunter was often a replacement for the Silver Age Superman.

Post-Crisis, the 1988 four-issue limited series Martian Manhunter established his modern origin: Martian Manhunter is the last survivor from Mars. Teleported to Earth by Dr. Erdel’s experimental beam, he became a champion on Earth. In fact, J’onn J’onnz was displaced in time and space. Indeed, the Martian race has been dead for years.

OVERPOWERED, J’ONN J’ONNZ HAS THE POWER TO MOVE A PLANET

In JLA (2003) #75, Superman, Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter pull the Earth back into orbit with the magic lasso.
In JLA (2003) #75, Superman, Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter pull the Earth back into orbit with the magic lasso. DC Comics.

Notably, Martian Manhunter has been called the Swiss-Army Knife of the Justice League. Regularly, he serves as the League’s telepathic link, strategist, advisor and detective. In fact, Martian telepathy has been able to scan minds, repair damage, contact over vast distances and enter into mental battles. Indeed, J’onn is able to effect his super powers on a vast scale. Even, to the Planetary-Level.

In JLA (2003) #75, Martian Manhunter showcases why he is one of the strongest beings in the DC Universe. In the issue, the Earth is pulled out of orbit by the Atlantean villain Gamemnae. With a spell, Manitou Raven increases the size of Wonder Woman’s lasso. Heroically, Superman, Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter pull the Earth back into orbit with the magic lasso.

Really, Martian Manhunter has too many super powers as a result of Martian physiology: Super strength, super speed, nigh invulnerability, flight, heat vision, EM vision, telescopic vision, microscopic vision, super hearing, super breath, regeneration, invisibility, phasing, shapeshifing, telepathy, telekinesis, matter absorption. Later, we will see what happens when his powers are unleashed against his friends.

BECOMING #AWEAPONOFMASSDESTRUCTION, J’ONN EVOLVED INTO FERNUS THE BURNING

In JLA (2003) #89, Flash evacuates 532000 men and women from Chongjin destroyed in a nuclear explosion at the speed of light.
In JLA (2003) #89, Flash evacuates 532000 men and women from Chongjin destroyed in a nuclear explosion at the speed of light. DC Comics.

In JLA: Trial By Fire, Martian Manhunter becomes Fernus The Burning. On multiple occasions, Martian Manhunter has been stated to be the most powerful being in the DC Universe. In fact, the Burning Martians were so powerful that the Guardians of The Universe had to genetically suppress them. Thanks to his love for Scorch, J’onn J’onnz overcame his fire weakness. Indeed, he became Fernus who was so powerful that it took the entire JLA to match up to him.

Only Plastic Man was able to take him on mano-a-mano since his brain was no longer organic. Sinisterly, the Burning Martian needed fire and pain from human extinction in order to spawn. Using his love for Scorch, he detonated the nuclear weapons on Earth. Desperately, the JLA managed to destroy them. However, Superman failed to destroy the last one. Catastrophically, the weapon exploded in Chongjin, North Korea.

In JLA (2003) #89, Flash (Wally West) was able to save the 532,000 inhabitants of the city in a fraction of a second.

WHY J’ONN J’ONNZ IS AN OVERPOWERED BEING

HIS TELEPATHY CAN AFFECT COSMIC ENTITIES

 In JLA/Spectre: Soul War (2003) #1, J’onn repairs Spectre’s mind. DC Comics.

In JLA/Spectre: Soul War (2003) #1, the Spectre is knocked unconscious. Previously, during the Trans invasion, the Spectre had merged with the JLA. Now, the Spectre lies on the floor traumatized. Surprisingly, Batman fears the worst. Amazingly, Martian Manhunter reveals ghosts cannot die. Then, he proceeds to repair the cosmic mind.

AS FERNUS, HE DESTROYED ALL HUNDRED WHITE MARTIANS IN THE PHANTOM ZONE OFF-PANEL

In JLA (2003) #86, Fernus kills the White Martians in the Phantom Zone.
In JLA (2003) #86, Fernus kills the White Martians in the Phantom Zone. DC Comics.

In JLA (2003) #86, the JLA battle Fernus for the first time. On the lunar Watchtower, they find Superman phased onto the Justice League table. Soon, Fernus attacks them. Eventually, Batman revives Superman and Manitou Raven opens his mystical eyes. For the first time, Superman sees the enemy: Fernus!

Fortunately, the JLA manage to escape the attack. Soon, they regroup at the Fortress of Solitude. There, Superman plans to use the Phantom Zone Projector. First, the Leaguers must check on the White Martians imprisoned there after Terror Incognita.

Shockingly, the Leaguers find Fernus with the butchered corpses of White Martians. Behind Fernus, they are floating in the Phantom Zone. Though the genocide occurred off-panel.

Per our calculations, Fernus performed a Galaxy-Level feat of Energy Projection.

Later, the JLA find the comatose Martian Manhunter. In JLA: Paradise Lost (1998) #3, J’onn J’onnz has a near death experience. As matter of fact, Batman has a plan and enlists Aztek’s and Flash’s help. In theory, J’onn’s Martian physiology is a complex immune system at the molecular level. With Flash’s Speed Force, it is possible to excite J’onn’s molecules, reviving his immunity and invulnerability.

Successfully, Martian Manhunter’s heart starts pumping blood again. According to Aztek’s readings, J’onn should recover. Actually, J’onn J’onnz is pulled out of his coma.

In the issue, Professor Ivo captures Martian Manhunter. Strongly, J’onn breaks himself free. Then, a robot Ivo unleashes Amazo. Again imprisoned, Hawkgirl frees J’onn, crushing Amazo’s head.

Incredibly, Martian Manhunter amps himself, growing in size. As he does, he barrels through the hundred of incomplete Amazos. In conclusion, they realize Ivo is also a robot. Also, Lex Luthor is alive.

SUPERMAN EXCEEDS A STELLAR LEVEL OF SUPER-STRENGTH

In 'Justice League' (2012) #6, Superman bullrushes Darkseid into a Boom Tube.

Since “Superman Reborn,” the New 52 Superman and the Rebirth Superman have been merged into one. In effect, it is the same Post-Crisis Superman. Moreover, the Rebirth and New 52 universes merged into a single DC Universe. Nevertheless, Superman’s Post-Crisis history has been preserved. In addition, the 10 years stolen by Doctor Manhattan have been restored.

Over the past decades, Superman’s strength level has fluctuated. Noticeably, John Byrne’s Superman decreased Superman’s strength level considerably. Since the “Death of Superman,” the Man of Steel has steadily increased in super strength. Normally, Superman can move or shatter planets. Also, he is strong enough to hold a miniature black hole in his hand. Therefore, the Man of Steel can exceed a Stellar Level of super strength.

However, since Post-Crisis, Big Blue has performed feats that displayed a potential for infinite strength. Let’s list five feats that show Superman’s infinite strength.

‘FINAL CRISIS: SUPERMAN BEYOND’ (2008) #1

In 'Superman Beyond' (2008) #1, Superman and Captain Marvel lift the Book of Limbo, a book with an infinite number of pages.
In ‘Superman Beyond’ (2008) #1, Superman and Captain Marvel lift the Book of Limbo, a book with an infinite number of pages. AP Photo/DC Comics.

In ‘Final Crisis: Superman Beyond’ (2008) #1, Superman and Captain Marvel/Shazam lift the Book of Limbo. Really, it is a book with an infinite number of pages. In “Superman, The Greatest Story,” I argue that it is feats that define Superman’s story. In ‘Final Crisis,’ Superman is not only the strongest story, he is also the strongest hero. Definitely, this feat takes the top spot on this list.

‘JUSTICE LEAGUE’ (2019) #25

In ‘Justice League’ (2019) #25, in a battle against the World Forger, Superman breaches the Sixth Dimension and shatters the Forger’s Multiverse creation with a punch. AP Photo/DC Comics.

In the conclusion of the “Sixth Dimension” storyline, Superman battles against the World Forger. Freed from his prison on Prime Earth, Superman sundips multiple times in yellow suns. Then, flying at high speeds through the cosmos, Superman reaches the speed of light. In an instant, he becomes a line and all time and space is perceptible to him. With a devastating punch, Superman shatters the World Forger’s 20 billion years old multiverse.

‘JLA/The Spectre Soul War’ (2003) #1

In 'JLA/Spectre: Soul War' (2003) #1, Superman and Wonder Woman lift Spectre.
In ‘JLA/Spectre: Soul War’ (2003) #1, Superman and Wonder Woman lift Spectre. AP Photo/DC Comics.

Superman and Wonder Woman are two of the strongest warriors in the DC Universe. In ‘JLA/Spectre: Soul War’ (2003) #1, the Spectre comes to ask the JLA for help to stop the Trans’ invasion. During the invasion, Spectre merges with the JLA. As the Spectre and JLA investigate, Spectre is knocked unconscious. In free fall, Superman and Wonder Woman lift Spectre.

Indeed, considering the free fall and that Spectre’s weight is eternity. Definitely, this feat requires infinite strength.

‘ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN’ (2006) #649

In 'Adventures of Superman' (2006) #649, Earth-One and Earth-Two Supermen clash over the death of Earth-Two Lois Lane.
In ‘Adventures of Superman’ (2006) #649, Earth-One and Earth-Two Supermen clash over the death of Earth-Two Lois Lane. AP Photo/DC Comics.

To sum, “Infinite Crisis” is largely a question about who is the true Superman. Indeed, Earth-One Superman, Earth-Two Superman, Superboy and Superboy-Prime all contended for the title.

During the crisis, Earth-Two Superman successfully brought back Earth-Two with Alexander Luthor Jr’s help. And, when Earth-Two Lois Lane died, Earth-One Superman journeyed to Earth-Two to help. However, Earth-Two Superman blamed Kal-El for her death.

Dangerously, a clash followed between the two Supermen that threatened time and space. The Men of Steel’s punches threatened reality and opened a rift of chronal energy. Then, each Superman was transported to the other one’s Earth, reliving its history.

Eventually, Wonder Woman had to come to Earth-Two to restrain Earth-Two Superman. To consider, opening a chronal rift requires time travel. Definitely, this feat requires infinite strength.

‘ACTION COMICS’ (2001) #782

In 'Action Comics' (2001) #782, a sundipped Superman transports Warworld and Imperiex to an instant after the Big Bang.
In ‘Action Comics’ (2001) #782, a sundipped Superman transports Warworld and Imperiex to an instant after the Big Bang. AP Photo/DC Comics.

Well put, Superman asks Brainiac-13 “What’s infinity times infinity?” In ‘Action Comics’ (2001) #782, a cosmic Superman transports B-13’s Warworld an instant after the Big Bang.

During “Our Worlds At War,” Imperiex sought to hollow the universe. When Imperiex’s armor was cracked, Brainiac-13 absorbed its energies into Warworld. To that end, Brainiac sought to rule the universe.

Via a temporal Boom Tube, the sundipped Superman transported Warworld to the beginning of time. Though, the temporal Boom Tube was created by Steel’s Entropy Aegis. Nonetheless, Superman’s feat still involved time travel.

Indeed, it is debatable whether the feat required an infinite amount of super strength. At the same time, pushing Warworld through a temporal Boom Tube definitely required an incalculable amount of super-strength.
