Thor, Silver Surfer Vol 3 #86

IN THOR FEATS

SILVER SURFER (NORRIN RADD)
EARTH-616

In Silver Surfer (1993) #86 titled “Friends and Foes”, Thor performs a super-strength feat. Silver Surfer battles Warrior Madness Thor who has fallen in love with the Mind Valkyrie. During, Warrior Madness Thor knocks out Silver Surfer at full power with a hammer strike.

How much strength does it take to knock out Silver Surfer at full power with a hammer strike?

IN THE ISSUE, “BLOOD AND THUNDER” THOR STRUCK SILVER SURFER WITH A HAMMER STRIKE WITH ARC LENGTH 3.38 METERS. IN ADDITION, SILVER SURFER FELL 1000 KILOMETERS TO THE PLANETOID BELOW. AND SILVER SURFER CAN SURVIVE INSIDE A DOZEN STELLAR MASS BLACK HOLE.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, WARRIOR MADNESS THOR GENERATED TEN TIMES THE POWER OF A DOZEN STELLAR MASS BLACK HOLE WITH A POWER OF 3.0257488*1050 WATTS. ENOUGH TO DESTROY A SOLAR SYSTEM.

SUPER-STRENGTH SUPER FEAT:

MULTI-GALAXY

Super Strength: Multi-Galaxy 75%

An all-out Silver Surfer is battling a Warrior Madness Thor. During the rumble, Thor knocks out Silver Surfer with a hammer strike and the former falls to the planetoid below.

We will calculate Silver Surfer’s durability in order to estimate the super strength.

SILVER SURFER’S DURABILITY

In Silver Surfer (1988) #9, Nova enlists Silver Surfer’s help in order to aid a dying Galactus. Together, the Elders of the Universe have built a device powered by the Soul Gems. Now, Galactus is dying. At Silver Surfer’s command, Nova collapses a star into a black hole for Galactus to feed. Then, Silver Surfer, Nova and Galactus survive inside the black hole.

In 'Silver Surfer' (1987) #9, Nova destroys a sun to create a black hole.In Silver Surfer (1988) #9, Nova destroys a sun to create a black hole.

We will use this feat to estimate Silver Surfer’s durability.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

From an article on Astronomy.com, stellar mass black holes can be 12 times more massive than the sun. From the Omni-Calculator, we obtain the Schwarzschild’s radius and gravitational field.

Thor, Silver Surfer Vol 3 #86.

Using the stellar mass, we calculate Silver Surfer’s gravitational potential energy, a 1000000 m above the planetoid.

U = mgh = (2.3868*1031 kg)(1267696768068 m/s2)(1000000 m) = 3.0257386*1049 J.

If we assume a fraction of a second for Thor’s hammer strike, the power is 3.0257386*1049 W. Since Thor is in Warrior Madness, his strength is multiplied by 10 so his power is 3.0257386*1050 W.

We also calculate the arc length in order to compute the work done by the force. For that, we draw two right-angled triangles which evenly separate the arc length at about 60 degrees each. We take the length of Thor’s arms to be about 1.3 meters.

L = 2(x2 + y2)1/2 = 2(1.32 m + 1.32 m)1/2 = 3.38 m.

Let’s calculate the work. Also, we multiply the force by 10 since Thor is in Warrior Madness.

W = Fd = 10mgL = (10)(2.3868*1031 kg)(1267696768068 m/s2)( 3.38 m) = 1.0226997*1045 J.

The total power output = 3.0257386*1050 W + 1.0226997*1045 W = 3.0257488*1050 W.

SUPER STRENGTH

First, Thor knocked out Silver Surfer to the planetoid 1000 km below. Hence, Thor knocked out Silver Surfer who can survive inside a stellar mass black hole.

To this end, Thor generated 3.0257386*1050 W of power. In order to knock out Silver Surfer, Thor had to generate a Multi-Galaxy Level of Super Strength.

Calculations for Thor, Silver Surfer Vol 3 #86

Black Hole Stellar Mass = (12)(1.989*10^30 kg) = 2.3868*10^31 kg.
Planetoid Orbit = 1000000 m.
Length of Thor’s Arms = 1.3 m.

Surfer’s Potential Energy = U = mgh = (2.3868*10^31 kg)(1267696768068 m/s2)(1000000 m) = 3.0257386*10^49 J.
Thor’s Warrior Madness Power = 3.0257386*10^50 W. L = 2(x2 + y2)1/2 = 2(1.32 m + 1.32 m)1/2 = 3.38 m.
W = Fd = 10mgL = (10)(2.3868*1031 kg)(1267696768068 m/s2)( 3.38 m) = 1.0226997*1045 J.
The total power output = 3.0257386*1050 W + 1.0226997*1045 W = 3.0257488*1050 W.
