THE GREATEST ATHLETES IN ANIME

For our very first Anime/Manga article, we compared Goku and One-Punch Man. For dedicated fans, who have been following the media, manga and anime produce some of the most gravity-defying and exhilarating fights in all fandom.
In today’s article, we compare two athletes that are the best and worst in terms of fighting spirit, character, friendship and yes… techniques!
Though both universes have never met, what would happen in a crossover basketball match using a soccer ball between the nearly undefeated Captain Tsubasa and The Basketball Genius Hanamichi Sakuragi?
Really, both are A-list heroes in their respective universes. Namely, the Captain Tsubasa series just ended its 43-year run with the manga Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun. For its part, Slam Dunk ended its Shonen Jump run in 1996.
Though both heroes have shown gravity-defying attacks, let’s compare their strength in terms of fighting teams. Hence, we compare Captain Tsubasa with the Drive Kick vs Sakuragi with the Slam Dunk.
KI AND POWER LEVELS
Generally, the concept of power levels understood scientifically or physically is not useful in anime and manga. In fact, this is due to the concept of ki.
In anime and manga, characters’ strengths are not dependent on how much physical strength they can exert, or how much they can lift. Instead, they depend on their ability to use their natural life force for devastating attacks, super speed or abilities such as flying.
In many respects, these are an application of martial arts and Chinese philosophies to the arts of fighting and war. For these reasons, we compare these warriors in terms of formidability.
FORMIDABILITY
Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy.
For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Level. For example, this explains why Batman is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful.
Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.
Before we rank our two heroes, let’s list some rules.
- First, the hero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
- In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
- Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
- Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.
First, we will compare them in Class, Weaknesses, Quality Opponents and Limitations. Then, let’s rank Aang in Avatar State vs Naruto in Ashura Mode in Formidability. To note, all scores are rated out of a 100.

1. STRENGTH CLASS
Generally, Tsubasa is among the strongest of the federation football players. In fact, as Captain of Japan World Youth, he possesses incredible balance and strength on his body, speed and cardio-vascular fitness to dribble for long distances.
At the same time, it seems his athleticism can be measured directly in terms of the power of his signature Drive Shot which is able to bend the soccer ball. Certainly, at base level, Tsubasa is Athlete-Level in Super-Strength.
However, the Captain is capable of incredible feats of strength, speed, is capable of dribbling entire teams and run long distances straight to the goal-keeper and create after images of himself. Definitely, his Class is at least Peak Human-Level to Metahuman-Level.
On the other hand, Haramichi Sakuragi seeks to become the strongest basketball player at Shohoku High and win the love of Haruko Akagi. Previously, he is a delinquent who gets into fights with his gang against other gangs at school.
Though, Sakuragi is extremely strong for his age and 6’2 height, his greatest strength is his ability to learn the fundamentals of basketball within a week after never playing it in the first place. Properly speaking, his Class is Athlete.
And when Sakuragi plays for the first time, his strength combines with his fighting style to give Shohoku High the edge against Ryonan High. Though Sakuragi has greater height and body physique, Tsubasa wins in terms of strength, speed and power.
ADVANTAGE: TSUBASA
2. WEAKNESSES
For the most part, Tsubasa has few weaknesses as a footballer. In fact, he is so great that he has only lost one match in his entire career against Meiwa FC in the opening game of the 6th Yomiuri Land tournament.
However, the Captain has had entire career to learn his football skills from around 8 years old. Hence, he has deeloped both experience and talent to lead the Japan World Youth. In fact, this could prove an advantage for Sakuragi who is a quick learner.
Generally, Sakuragi learned the basics of basketball quickly. At the same time, he mastered in a few attempts the most explosive aspect of basketball which is the Slam Dunk. In a match to score or dunk the most points with a soccer ball with kicks or shots, he has the advantage in height and physique.
At the same time, Sakuragi’s temper, lack of discipline and sometimes foolishness can cost him the match against the more disciplined and experienced Tsubasa.
Overall, Tsubasa has a slight advantage in terms of Weakness due to Sakuragi’s lack of discipline and experience in a team setting.
