UNDER-APPRECIATED HEROES/VILLAINS
IN BEST OF THE YEAR
WE NOMINATE THE #BESTOFTHEYEAR
In Blake et Mortimer: Le Sanctuaire du Gondwana (2008), Blake and Mortimer live their most fateful adventure yet. Previously, we learn that Mortimer has been having memory troubles and needs to go on vacation. In a polar, he travels to Tanganyika, to solve the riddle of an ancient civilization.
In fact, it’s the new adventures of Blake and Mortimer by French author Yves Sente. And we learn about Kenyan culture and colonial Africa. Certainly, we nominate Blake et Mortimer: Le Sanctuaire du Gondwana , winner of News Headline in Comic-Con Trends, as Best of the Year.

FOR GONDWANA: URU SAVES A EUROPEAN
The young Uru, a Maasai saves Nastasia, Mortimer’s assistant. Indeed, during their expedition, he follows Nastasia as she almost drowns across a river and saves her from an old lion.
By killing the lion, Uru completes a rite of passage and is initiated posthumously as a Maasai warrior. With Uru, we see an African culture represented that is not too caricatural.

AGAINST GONDWANA: PROTECTED SPECIES
Previously, lion hunting was a practice among the Maasai. But Yves Sente may portray a practice that was part of colonial Africa and is no longer contemporary.
In current culture, lions are a protected species. Today, many Maasai warriors are hired as lion guardians to protect them.
