‘WHAT IF THE PHOENIX HAD NOT DIED’ ?

The Phoenix Force destroys the Earth-81727 universe.
The Phoenix Force destroys the Earth-81727 universe. Marvel Comics.
In our short-story of love, passion, destruction and extinction, we begin with Uatu in the Earth-616 universe.

To begin, the Watcher ponders the Phoenix's journey with the X-Men. In his musings, he contemplates an alternate reality...

Here, Phoenix did not die! Instead, the X-Men lost their battle against the Shi'ar and the Phoenix Force was psychically lobotomized from Jean Grey. But in reality, this was further from the truth.

On a fateful day, the X-Men were called into battle by Lilandra. On the alien planet Arama, our children of the atom were to face Galactus trying to consume the planet... and his herald Terrax! A fierce battle followed during which Terrax struck down the X-Men, even threatening Cyclops.

At that moment, we realized that the Phoenix had been laying dormant. Violently, she emerged and removed the Power Cosmic from Terrax. Then, she valiantly engaged Galactus in combat. Soon, she defeated him and repelled his invasion. However, Jean is overwhelmed by the fury and the passion of the Phoenix. A cosmic fiery bird of death and rebirth, Phoenix destroyed asteroids and consumed a star.

Eventually, the X-Men returned to Earth. When Shadowcat berated Jean for losing control, the telepath killed her. Soon, Dark Phoenix destroyed the X-Men one by one. Finally, the death of her lover, Cyclops, was the last straw.

In a fit of rage, folly and cosmic madness, the fiery bird consumed Earth, then the galaxy, and finally, the universe and beyond.

Here ends the story of the Phoenix which should serve as a cautionary tale to not let this fiery cosmic bird to reign unimpeded in the cosmos.

IN EXTINCTION

THE PHOENIX FORCE IS COMING TO EARTH, SEEKING HOPE SUMMERS

In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #1, the Avengers come into world-wide conflict with the X-Men. To begin, Nova crashes into the Empire State Building in New York City. Critically injured, he states “it’s coming” before falling into a coma. Later, at a White House, Captain America and Iron Man brief the President on recent events. Briefly, Iron Man has analyzed the energy signature on Nova’s uniform. Sinisterly, it points to the Phoenix coming to Earth. Importantly, it is locking for a host in order to potentially lay waste to Earth.

Suddenly, Tony’s programs signal a Phoenix flare on Earth. Soon, Captain America meets Wolverine at the Jean Grey School For Higher Learning. Despite his resistance, Cap recruits Wolverine. Indeed, he intends to convince Scott Summers to stop the Phoenix threat. Previously, Cyclops and Hope Summers are training for the Phoenix’s arrival. As Cyclops pushes Hope to her limits, the young mutant manifests the Phoenix Force. Later, Captain America comes to Utopia to take Hope Summers into protective custody.

THE PHOENIX FIVE ARE BORN!

In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #2, it is all-out war between the Avengers and the X-Men. Meanwhile, Hope is locked safely in a room with the Lights. When neither side has the upper hand, Wolverine and Spider-Man seek out Hope. There, they find Hope having dealt with the Lights. However, before Wolverine can gut her, Hope blasts him and Spider-Man. Then, she makes her escape.

In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #3, Wolverine comes to an hour later. Quickly, he realizes Cyclops’ surrender is a ruse. In fact, Magik has created the illusion that she is Doctor Strange transporting herself. Before he can act, the X-Men teleport to Long Beach to hunt down Hope. At Avengers Tower, Marvel Girl tells Wolverine they have traced Hope’s energy signature to five different locations.

Soon, Captain America divides the Avengers into five teams sent to the five locations: Wundagore Mountain, Tabula Rasa, Wakanda, Latveria and Savage Land. In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #4, Hope recruits Wolverine on a mission to the moon. There, she hopes to bond with the Phoenix. On site, Wolverine betrays Hope and gives her location to the Avengers.

At the same time, Emma Frost intercepts Cap’s transmission. Soon, the X-Men meet the Avengers in the Blue Area of the moon. In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #5, the X-Men battle the Avengers. In an explosive battle, Hope rejects the Phoenix. At the same time, Iron Man’s Phoenix-Killer Armor detonates the Phoenix splitting it. As the smoke disappears, the Phoenix Five rise from the ashes. Mysteriously, they depart with Hope.

REBUILDING THE WORLD, THE PHOENIX FIVE TAKE AVENGERS PRISONERS

In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #6, the Phoenix Five begin world-building. Cyclops rebuilds Utopia, Magik ends war, Emma Frost destroys the Sentinels, Colossus destroys nuclear misssiles and King Namor removes nuclear submarines. Certainly, the Phoenix Five seem unstoppable. However, Captain America and the Avengers question their new-found omnipotence. Seeing the Phoenix Five as a threat, they commandeer a tactical mission to retrieve Hope Summers.

When Utopia is under attack, Scott’s adoptive granddaughter changes sides with the Avengers. Decisively, it turns the battle and shatters Cyclops’ humanity. On the Blue Area of the moon, Scott consults with Jean Grey created out of moon dust. From there, he decides to rid the world of the Avengers. Earlier, Scarlet Witch had a grim vision where the Phoenix Five annihilated the Avengers. Soon, that vision may come to pass.

WITH THE FULL POWER OF THE PHOENIX, CYCLOPS IS DEFEATED BY HOPE SUMMERS AND SCARLET WITCH

In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #12, occurs the final battle. Finally, Cyclops has attained the full power of the Phoenix while the other Phoenix Four have been depowered. In a titanic battle, Cyclops is omnipresent on Earth across time and space. Earlier, Tony reveals that the reason the Phoenix has been defeated by Scarlet Witch. Really, the Phoenix and Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Magic are like yin and yang. In fact, when Wanda said “no more mutants”, Phoenix said “more mutants.”1

During the battle, Hope and Scarlet Witch go toe-to-toe with Cyclops. In a final Iron Fist punch, Hope fells Cyclops. With Cyclops defeated, Hope claims the Phoenix. Sensing the urgency, Wanda helps her extinguish the Phoenix flame. At the same time, the Phoenix is used to recreate the mutant population on Earth. In the end, though homo superior survives, it is at great cost. Indeed, Professor X is dead, Cyclops is in custody, and the X-Men are divided among themselves. Visiting Scott in prison, Cap acknowledges his responsibility. Over the years, he did not work sufficiently for mutants’ civil rights and plans to set up the Uncanny Avengers.

KITTY PRYDE SENDS ROGUE AND GAMBIT ON A MISSION TO PARAISO WHERE MUTANT COUPLES ARE DISAPPEARING

In ‘Rogue & Gambit’ (2018) #1, Rogue and Gambit are sent by Kitty Pryde to Paraiso as an X-Men couple. In summary, mutant couples are disappearing at Paraiso and Rogue and Gambit are sent to investigate. At the beginning of the issue, Rogue is training with the X-Men student body in the Danger Room. Gambit has been called in by Kitty and is sent into the Danger Room by Ororo.

During the training, Gambit saves Rogue from a Sentinel pinning her to the ground. At the end, Gambit and Rogue attempt to reconcile their past feelings. Meanwhile, the X-man is called in by Headmistress Kitty Pryde. She finds out about the mutant disappearances in Paraiso and that Gambit has been called in by Kitty in order to send them both into therapy retreat as an undercover X-Men couple.

IT’S A RING OF FIRE AND TELEPATHY IS AGAIN MANIPULATING ROGUE’S AND GAMBIT’S FEELINGS

In ‘Rogue & Gambit’ (2018) #2, telepathy is again manipulating Rogue’s and Gambit’s feelings for each other. After brain screenings, Anna and Remy have couple therapy with Dr. Grand. Interestingly, they reveal different accounts of their first encounter. Strangely, Rogue only remembers their first encounter as the result of the Shadow King’s telepathic manipulation on Muir Island. Doubtfully, she remembers her feelings for Gambit as the result of the Shadow King’s manipulation and as not being real.

Gambit reveals their first encounter was actually a fight on Muir Island manipulated by the Shadow King. Though Gambit won the fight, it was love at first sight and ended in a kiss. At night, the X-Men couple goes to investigate the Paraiso Island Hospital. They stalk the air ducts and infiltrate the lab. There, they are greeted by a super-powered hit squad and engage them. Accidentally, they find a lab with golems being experimented upon.

IN THE FINAL ISSUE, IT’S ROGUE AND GAMBIT VS THE GOLEMS AND LAVISH

In ‘Rogue & Gambit’ (2018) #4, the X-Men couple uncovers the truth about Paraiso Island. As a matter of fact, a golem supervillain is attracting mutant couples to the island in order to steal their super powers and their memories and create clones or golems of them. Rogue and Gambit realize the reason they have been loving each other is because Lavish has been feeding on their bad memories. With their super powers fading, Rogue and Gambit must fight Rogue and Gambit golems.

In ‘Rogue & Gambit’ (2018) #5, Rogue finds out they can both exchange their super powers and get their memories back at a cost. Indeed, they must live with the memories of the pain they have caused each other. Thus, Rogue decides to absorb the powers and the memories of all the golems and return them to all the other couples on Paraiso Island. In the end, even though their feelings have been tampered with, Rogue decides to be re-united with Gambit. Finally, the X-Men couple shares a kiss.

THE X-MEN ARE UNDER ATTACK! AND COLOSSUS HAS BEEN HEATED AND COOLED INTO A STATUE!

IN MARVEL UNIVERSE

MYSTIQUE TRAINS WITH X-MEN DUPLICATES IN ORDER TO KILL THE X-MEN

In ‘Uncanny X-Men’ (1984) #177, Mystique sends the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in order to kill the X-Men. At the beginning of the issue, Mystique is fighting X-Men duplicates. The training simulation starts with Mystique fighting a Wolverine duplicate. Mystique defeats him by slashing his jugular. Next, Kitty Pryde phases onto the battle scene and sees Wolverine bleeding. It is Mystique. She has metamorphed into Wolverine and kills Kitty. With an attack that destroys the scene, the Colossus duplicate exclaims “Murderer!” Mystique defeats him with a flare skull.1

Suddenly, an optic blast hits Mystique behind her back. Mystique takes Cyclops and Colossus into the circus with mirrors. She feigns to shoot Colossus with a gun only for Cyclops to respond with an optic blast that reverberates through glass, killing Colossus. Cyclops cries “No!!”1 Sneaking up behind him, Mystique murders him by choking him with a rope. Then, she faces Storm. Responding to Storm’s attack, Mystique blows up a fuel truck behind Storm, incinerating her. Stepping into the circus like a trapeze, she meets Rogue who means to avenge her friends. As she incinerates Rogue with her gun, she howls “like a mad dog.”1 The last enemy is Nightcrawler. After he teleports her, she hesitates to kill him with her dagger. He does not. He knocks her out.

COLOSSUS IS FROZEN INTO A STATUE BY PYRO AND AVALANCHE

Kurt, Amanda Sefton, Kitty, and Peter go to see the Royal Ballet at Lincoln Center. Peter and Kitty drop Kurt and Amanda. Then, they go park the car. On their walk in the parking, there is an explosion. Peter asks Kitty to summon the fire brigade while he attempts to save people. Changing into Colossus, Peter springs into action. Colossus notes the building is derelict and that there must be squatters.

Running up the stairs, he reaches the top floor and sees Blob. The fire was a trap set by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Blob slaps outside the building. Then, Pyro creates of bird of living fire. Colossus is heated red-hot then “white-hot, to incandescence and beyond!”1 As Colossus wonders if he can melt, he falls to the ground “like a meteor”.1 He attempts to gather his wits but then he is cooled to absolute zero cold by Avalanche.

MYSTIQUE ATTACKS THE X-MANSION TO RECRUIT ROGUE BACK INTO THE BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS

In ‘Uncanny X-Men’ (1984) #178, the X-Men are under attack by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants led by Mystique. As the X-Men battle the Brotherhood, Mystique infiltrates the X-Mansion. The X-Men manage to defeat the Brotherhood though Blob reveals the mission objective: kill Professor X and recruit Mystique’s adoptive daughter Rogue, back into the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

At the X-Mansion, Mystique metamorphs into Rogue and offers Professor X some herb tea. Professor X is struggling to maintain contact with the X-Men. He notes something is scrambling his psi-scan. As he identifies the psionic scrambler used by Mystique to inhibit his psi-probes, Rogue fires a shot at Professor X. As Professor X lies on the floor, Mystique states that Professor X was able to identify her psionic scrambler and alter her shot at the last moment so that it may only wound him and not kill him.

In ‘Uncanny X-Men’ (1984) #178, Mystique metamorphs into Rogue to fool Professor X and shoots him. Photo/Marvel Comics.

Rogue enters the room and an argument between mother and daughter ensues. Mystique metamorphs back into her form. She reveals her mission was to get Rogue back into the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and orders her to pack her things while she finishes killing Professor X. Rogue says her powers are out of control and Professor X is her chance to have a normal life.

Appearing before the X-Men over a hologram, Mystique gives the X-Men an ultimatum. The freedom of the Brotherhood of Mutants in exchange for the life of Professor X. Storm, the leader of the X-Men, agrees to let the Brotherhood go free. Then, we see the bloodied body of Kitty Pryde on the floor.

ROGUE SAVES COLOSSUS, SHE IS TURNED INTO STONE

In ‘Uncanny X-Men’ (1984) #179, Rogue helps resurrect Colossus from the attack by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Kitty Pryde has to marry Caliban the Morlock. However, she gives her word to no longer resist her promise and marry Caliban if the Healer can help resurrect Colossus. Kitty’s plan is for Rogue to absorb Colossus’ powers and for the Morlock healer to heal Colossus wounds as he becomes human.

Rogue agrees to Kitty’s plan. She begins to absorb Colossus’ powers enduring unimaginable pain. As Colossus reverts to his human form, “he has seconds to live.”2 Immediately, the Healer heals his wounds. Once the process is complete, Rogue has been turned into a statue. Storm laments that Rogue may have finally earned her place with the X-Men. In the end, Kitty is released from her promise and no longer has to marry Caliban nor live with the Morlocks.

LOGAN’S DREAM AND A FLASHBACK

Through his escapade, Wolverine experiences flashbacks and a dream. The first one is after a plant blasts him with hallucinogenic pollen. He starts dreaming of being in Japan riding horses with his love, Mariko Yashida. The dream ends when a Brood disintegrates Mariko with a ray.

In the first flashback, Wolverine and the X-Men are on a compliment and farewell party on Lilandra’s ship, the empress of the Shi’ar Empire. The party is actually a trap by Deathbird. The X-Men are taken to the throneworld of the Shi’ar. To congratulate them, each X-Man is given a gift. At Wolverine’s turn, he realizes the doll is actually the Brood Queen granting them the gift. The X-Men are children of the atom, gifted by evolution with uncanny preternatural gifts.

THE EMBRYO HATCHES… WOLVERINE’S HEALING FACTOR FIGHTS BACK

In the second flashback, Wolverine remembers his escapade last night and trying to save Kitty Pryde. Before leaving the palace, Wolverine witnesses a Queen egg hatching within Fang, transforming him into a Brood. He realizes the X-Men have been implanted by the Brood Queen with Brood embryos. That is the gift that the alien species granted to the X-Men: a metamorphosis into an alien species. The struggle to survive is engaged for the survival of homo superior, the next stage in human evolution.

Wolverine awakens from the flashback and forces a Brood to give him a ride to the palace, hopping on it. On the way, he gets ambushed by Brood hunters and soon kills them. At the end of the fight, the Brood embryo hatches. Wolverine fights back with his healing factor killing the embryo illustrating the fact of evolution that only the strong survive. Wolverine awakens at sunrise with the side-effects of the embryo hatch on his body. He heads for the palace. Wolverine vows to kill the X-Men if they have been infected by the Brood embryos.
