DC VS MARVEL

IN TEAM-UPS AND CROSSOVERS

“A CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS”

JLA/Avengers. DC Comics.

In honor of George Perez, let’s look at a classic DC/Marvel crossover.

Furthermore, our top-rated Formidability Ranking uses four central Fighting Skills to settle the debate.

Let’s read our ranking.

JLA/AVENGERS IS CANON TO DC AND MARVEL

JLA/AVENGERS

In the classic inter-company crossover JLA/Avengers (2004), both super-teams assemble to take on a threat that threatens the Omniverse. Particularly, the series was so successful that the JLA: Syndicate Rules established the crossover to be canon to the New Earth continuity.

In contests of champions, the Grandmaster and Metron task both teams with the responsibility to assemble six items of power from each universe.

Namely, from the DC Universe: Green Lantern’s Power Battery, the Book of Eternity, the Orb of Ra, the items of the Demons Three, the Spear of Destiny and Psycho Pirate’s Medusa Mask.

From the Marvel Universe: the Ultimate Nullifier, the Evil Eye of Avalon, the Infinity Gems, the Cosmic Cube, the Casket of Ancient Winters and the Wand of Watoomb.

JLA/AVENGERS #2

In JLA/Avengers #2, the Leaguers are leading 6-5. In a titanic clash, the JLA and the Avengers face off for the Cosmic Cube. On Savage Land, a knock-out drag-out slugfest follows. Let’s rank the main contestants in the battle in terms of the Power Hierarchy.

QUALITY OPPONENTS

Generally, our formidability takes into account a character’s quality of opponents. Using this hierarchy, we can formulate a Power Hierarchy. Namely, it is the following:

Peak Human, Assassin, Metahuman, Criminal Mastermind/Team-Wrecker, Warrior, Hi-Tech Genius/Enhanced, Political Leader, Demon or Monster/Supernatural Being, Champion, Cosmic Being, Skyfather, God or Abstract.

Before we rank the JLA and Avengers, let’s list some rules.

  1. First, only beings below God or Abstract are included. God or Abstract include Galactus, Eternity, Living Tribunal, Beyonder, One-Above-All.
  2. Since we focus on battles, we will go by power levels.
  3. We are rating power levels only in issue #2.
  4. Since only the major battles are included, not all members of both teams are included.

Let’s rank our JLA and Avengers.

The Cosmic Beings

SUPERMAN
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

SUPERMAN IS A COSMIC BEING

Really, Superman‘s power levels are off the charts in the issue.

To this end, he ranks as Cosmic Being because he stops Thor’s hammer strike with his left hand.

In fact, it takes at least a Cosmic Being in order to bypass the enchantment on Thor’s Mjolnir.

Potentially, Superman could solo the Avengers team.

Indeed, it takes Hercules, Iron Man, She-Hulk, Wonder Man and Vision to put down the Man of Steel at the end of the fight.

THOR
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

THOR IS A CHAMPION

Really, Thor faces one of his toughest battles. First, he wades through a powerful blast of heat vision.

After Superman caught Mjolnir, he knocks him out with a powerful haymaker. Indeed, he is overwhelmed by Superman’s sheer power.

Generally, Thor ranks as a Champion since he is at least as powerful as the Avengers team.

ZATANNA
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

Both Zatanna and Scarlet Witch are amped by Chaos Magic.

Effectively, they are Cosmic Beings with powers of teleportation, nigh omniscience and reality-warping.

SCARLET WITCH
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

Both Zatanna and Scarlet Witch are amped by Chaos Magic.

Effectively, they are Cosmic Beings with powers of teleportation, nigh omniscience and reality-warping.

GREEN LANTERN
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

In their first match-up, Green Lantern had Photon on the ropes. As matter of fact, he caged her up in a construct.

In their second match, Photon is absorbing the Oan energy from his power ring. Fortunately, he is saved by Captain Atom.

Generally, Green Lantern is a Champion. However, he upgrades to Cosmic Being after he absorbs the energy of the Cosmic Cube.

And had he succeeded, the JLA woud have had a clean victory.

CAPTAIN MARVEL
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

To begin, Monica Rambeau has the power of converting her body into any energy in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Really, she is a Champion on the Avengers team and can take on any one.

Likely, she needs to adapt to the type of energy and has a limit to how much EM energy she can absorb.

Nonetheless, she is among the mightiest on the Avengers team.

The Champions

WONDER WOMAN
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

So far, Wonder Woman has shown she can defeat multiple Avengers. At first, she faces Hercules, Wasp and Yellowjacket.

Later, after Superman and Thor are defeated, she knocks down Yellowjacket.

Generally, Wonder Woman is a Champion in the Power Hierarchy.

GIANT MAN
Power Hierarchy: Enhanced 50%

First, Yellowjacket shrinks down to size and attacks Wonder Woman with the other Avengers.

Then, he delivers a powerful blow at increased size when Thor falls. However, Wonder Woman soon overpowers him.

With the Pym Particles, Yellowjacket is Enhanced in the Power Hierarchy.

AQUAMAN
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

In one instant, Aquaman defeats multiple Avengers with a sea monster.

Generally, Aquaman is a Champion in the Power Hierarchy.

AVENGERS
Power Hierarchy: Supernatural Being 67%

Generally, the Avengers add up to Hercules‘ power level, which is Supernatural Being in the Power Hierarchy.

The Peak Humans

GREEN ARROW
Power Hierarchy: Peak Human 8%

In the battle, Green Arrow and Hawkeye are in a stand-off. Though, in the end, Green Arrow has the advantage with Captain America’s help.

Generally, Green Arrow is a Peak Human in the Power Hierarchy.

HAWKEYE
Power Hierarchy: Peak Human 8%

In the battle, Green Arrow and Hawkeye are in a stand-off. Though, in the end, Captain America orders Hawkeye to stand down.

Generally, Hawkeye is a Peak Human in the Power Hierarchy.

VERDICT:

With help, the JLA won a virtual victory and the Avengers actually tied the score.
Really, lacking Flash’s Speed Force and the Avengers at full strength, the JLA are stacked with three Cosmic Beings and two Champions.
Generally, the underdog Avengers even things with better teamwork and preparation.
JLA wins a difficult fight.

And that’s our ranking! Please rate our article or share with friends and followers if you liked the DC vs Marvel.

Super Power Explained: The Classic JLA Big Seven Ranked In Formidability

The Classic JLA line-up radially to center: Batman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman.

SUPER POWER

Variant Comics

IN TEAMS, SQUADS AND LEAGUES

THE JLA ARE DC’S PREMIERE SUPERHERO TEAM

The Classic JLA line-up radially to center: Batman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman.
The Classic JLA line-up radially to center: Batman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman. DC Comics.

In our JLA reviews, we mentioned how Grant Morrison’s 1997 JLA run, revitalized the franchise. More importantly, it gave a new generation of fans the classic JLA line-up: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter.

What makes the JLA work is that they are a modern pantheon of gods. Literally! Grant Morrison gave us a beefed-up version of superheroes that continually outdid previous prowesses such as: Wally’s Infinite Mass Punch, Martian Manhunter figuring out Joker’s mind, Superman absorbing Mageddon’s anti-sunlight or even Batman going toe to toe against Prometheus.

Really, the JLA are DC’s premiere superhero team. In fact, they are the best and take on threats of any scale: From J’onn’s apparent death, the rise of the Injustice Gang, the alternate future of the ALE, to Superman remaining a symbol of hope in a White Martian invasion.

Though their chemistry is definitely legendary, let’s list how the individual members rank in formidability.

FORMIDABILITY

Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy. For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Skills Level. For example, this explains why Batman is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful. Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.

Before we rank the JLA Big Seven, let’s list some rules.

  1. First, the superhero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
  2. In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
  3. Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
  4. Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.

Let’s rank our Big Seven. To note, all scores are rated out of a 100.

1. WONDER WOMAN

Wonder Woman. DC Comics.

Strength Class: Limitless 100%
Weaknesses: Divine Enchantment 100%
Quality Opponents: God or Abstract 100%
Limitations: Leadership 75%

SCORE: 87.5

FORMIDABILITY:

WARRIOR MADNESS

Generally, Wonder Woman is THE best warrior in the universe. In fact, the best melee fighter in DC. In addition, unlike the other powerhouses in the DC Universe, she has no discernible weaknesses. Though, she has weaknesses to piercing weapons such as bullets and arrows. At the same time, it must be said that her powers are magical in nature, which means she ultimately depends on the Olympian gods.

Incredibly, she has stood up above her strength class against Superman, Darkseid and Doomsday. Furthermore, she consistently fights quality opponents like Ares, Genocide, First Born, The Olympian. Dark Nights: Death Metal reveals her greatest strength is the ability to see the truth.

However, where Wonder Woman ranks lower is on leadership and morals. At one point, she was cast out of Paradise Island for not bringing peace to Man’s World. Moreover, her warrior code has often caused other heroes to question her morals. For example, see Superman: Sacrifice.

2. GREEN LANTERN

Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner). DC Comics.

Strength Class: Galaxy 75%
Weaknesses: Irrelevant 100%
Quality Opponents: God or Abstract 100%
Limitations: Willpower 100%

SCORE: 87.5

FORMIDABILITY:

WARRIOR MADNESS

Personally, Kyle Rayner is among my favorites at DC. Indeed, the Last Green Lantern is one of the best characters in recent memory. What separates Kyle as a character, is the combination of art and superheroing. When you bring together a struggling artist and the most powerful weapon powered by imagination and will, you get… god-like power!

When Kyle merged with the Ion Entity, Green Lantern became a god-like being capable of creation, nigh-omniscience, nigh-omnipresence. Really, Kyle is among the most likable heroes and the fact that he continued to want a normal life, is a testament to his awesomeness!

Generally, Green Lantern has faced tough competition from Mongul, Parallax, contained Solaris going supernova, fought the Monitors, the New Gods Takion and Kalibak, busted through the Manhunters and battled Monarch a time-travelling villain. With the yellow impurity gone, Kyle is only limited by his willpower. Indeed, something he has plenty of.

3. SUPERMAN

Superman. DC Comics.

Strength Class: Infinite 100%
Weaknesses: Rare Minerals or Elements 75%
Quality Opponents: God or Abstract 100%
Limitations: Weakness Exploitation 83%

SCORE: 79

FORMIDABILITY:

WARRIOR

Importantly, Superman is the most powerful DC hero. However, Superman’s greatest strength is his great humanity. When it comes down to limitations, opponents have often used a long list of weakness exploitation. Seldom, however, do they use his humanity in battle.

Perhaps, due to his overwhelming power and strength. In comparison to other heroes, the Man of Steel consistently faces tough competition. Many times, Superman faces foes above his Strength Class. Such as Dominus, Imperiex, Brainiac-13, Mandrakk, World Forger and True Form Darkseid.

Really, Superman’s weakness to kryptonite is well-known. As Thought Robot, Superman is second to the Monitor Mind The Overvoid in power. Though, the Cosmic Armor grants him Boundless Strength. Properly speaking, Superman belongs to the Infinite Class of Super Strength.

4. FLASH

Flash (Wally West). DC Comics.

Strength Class: Infinite 100%
Weaknesses: Universal Forces 92%
Quality Opponents: God or Abstract 100%
Limitations: Durability 25%

SCORE: 58.5

FORMIDABILITY:

BLOODLUSTED

Recently, Wally West has become the best Flash among fans. And we can see why: He is relatable, a team-player, a great leader and one of the best graduates from the Teen Titans. Since Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wally has grown on fans and today sports a large fanbase. Though, that success has not necessarily translated to live-action.

Formidability-wise, Flash has no real weaknesses but has limitations. In fact, the Speed Force grants him the potential for infinite kinetic energy. Since Flash’s powers are physical, they can be altered by advanced weaponry or devices. Namely, one of the Flash’s rogues, the Thinker, once depowered Flash and transported him to Wonderland. Generally, Flash is limited by his durability being a metahuman. Though, his super strength potential is Infinite.

Famously, Batman once figured out the Flash’s weakness. When Ra’s Al Ghul stole Batman’s contingency plans against the JLA, he specifically targeted their weaknesses. In order to take down Flash, attach an electrostrobe to his spine to trigger seizures at super speed. Ouch! Nevertheless, Flash is generally affected by universal or multiversal forces that either reduce his kinetic energy or his connection to the Speed Force. Effectively depowering him.

5. AQUAMAN

Aquaman. DC Comics.

Strength Class: Planetary 50%
Weaknesses: Divine Enchantment 100%
Quality Opponents: Champion 75%
Limitations: Power Dependency 92%

SCORE: 58.5

FORMIDABILITY:

BLOODLUSTED

Generally, most comic battle boards rank Aquaman as a mid-tier in strength level. In some respects, the rating is correct. Indeed, the problem is that he has shown to match powerful energy-based metahumans such as Black Manta and Ocean Master. At the same time, he has out-performed team-busters and champions such as the OMAC and Despero.

Formidability-wise, Aquaman’s only weakness is water deprivation. However, with the water bearer hand, he is able to overcome it. At the same time, water is itself a power dependency limitation since Orin depends on it to survive. Nonetheless, despite his reputation, Aquaman is a powerhouse at DC comics.

Indeed, his combination of brutality, resources, intelligence, strength, energy projection and telepathy is unmatched. In addition, the water is his natural element. In many cases, in underwater battles, he can call upon sea life. Which is a sizable part of all species on Earth.

6. MARTIAN MANHUNTER

Martian Manhunter. DC Comics.

Strength Class: Stellar 58%
Weaknesses: Conventional Warfare 25%
Quality Opponents: Cosmic Being 83%
Limitations: Weakness Exploitation 83%

SCORE: 24.5

FORMIDABILITY:

BRAWLER

At this time, Martian Manhunter still gets no respect from writers and editors. Though the Fernus story arc did reveal the Burning Martians’ terrifying potential. At his highest potential, J’onn J’onnz is a Cosmic Being. In some respects, DC comics has yet to capitalize on J’onn’s power-set to tell long-lasting stories.

Recently, in Justice League: Last Ride, J’onn J’onnz went Super Saiyan in order to defeat Darkseid. Definitely, a power-up for the Green Martian. Perhaps, an indication that J’onn has finally put aside his fire weakness. At the same time, Martian Manhunter may challenge Superman as the most powerful hero in the DC Universe.

Only time will tell if the editorial team at DC finally raises his stock.

7. BATMAN

Batman in the sewers of Gotham City.
Flash (Wally West). DC Comics.

Strength Class: Metahuman 17%
Weaknesses: Peak Human 8%
Quality Opponents: Skyfather 92%
Limitations: Durability 25%

SCORE: -29.5

FORMIDABILITY:

CIVILIAN

Why is Batman’s score so low? Let’s explain. In reality, Batman‘s formidability is about the intangibles. We are talking about resources, discipline, preparation, contingency plans, detective work with peak human conditioning and fighting skills. Though we can definitely rate these attributes, it is clear that the Dark Knight’s abilities rate him as a metahuman at his highest potential.

Though Batman does incredibly alone, his particular skills allow him to excel in teams. Indeed, his stealth and escapology are excellent for recon as the other powerhouses take the brunt of the damage. Furthermore, his expertise in science, psychology, criminology and mysticism make him the JLA’s best tactical leader.

However, being a low-level metahuman, the Dark Knight definitely suffers from low competition. His foes often include Bane, Killer Croc, Joker or even Prometheus. Nonetheless, as an essential part of the JLA, he has stood up to foes above his strength class: Superman, Green Lantern, Supergirl or even Darkseid. Finally, Batman may be the Bat-God or Prep-Master in any universe! And that is saying something.

And that’s our ranking! Don’t forget to leave comments if you liked the Super Power Explained.

IN GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY

#WEDEFENDCYBORG AND THE INTELLECTUAL RIGHTS OF INVENTORS

In ‘Cyborg’ (2016) #9, Cyborg turns himself in due to the Federal Cybernetic Registration Act. At the JLA Watchtower, Cyborg convenes a meeting with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam. Imminently, the Federal Cybernetic Regulation Act will pass in Congress. After the Technosapien Invasion, anyone infected with cybernetic enhancements will be detained indefinitely. Under so-called National Security, their tech will be made to comply. As Aquaman states, it is a means of control. To this end, #WeDefendCyborg and the intellectual rights of inventors.

At the Batcave, Cyborg hacks into N.S.A. databases to find the concentration camps. There, he finds three locations off the grid operated by a company called Cyber-Tech. No wonder, Cyber-Tech is lobbying for the legislation. In the draft, the same company will outfit every detainee with a standard Remote Access System Override Sequencer. In other words, Cyber-Tech will replace Cyborg and others with their standard microchip. At Amnesty Bay, Cyborg reveals his plan to turn himself in to federal agents. In fact, Cyborg knows his body will be disassembled and his tech reverse-engineered.

FOR CYBORG: CYBORG EVOLVED TO BECOME FULLY HUMAN

At Amnesty Bay, Cyborg makes a revelation to his friends. In fact, he hasn’t shared his secret with anyone yet. Since he trusts them, Cyborg shows them he has become fully human. In fact, his tech has evolved to re-grow Victor’s body fully. Now, the boundaries between man and machine have been blurred.

Before, Dr. Silas Stone had intellectual rights over Cyborg since he invented his tech. Now, with Cyborg fully human, he can no longer be considered a machine. Indeed, he is Victor Stone. Nevertheless, Victor complies since he plans to infiltrate Cyber-Tech and find out their operation.

AGAINST CYBORG: IN A RUSE, CYBORG FOUGHT FELLOW JLAER SHAZAM

Since Cyborg planned to surrender, he needed a diversion. In a staged fight, Cyborg was going to clash with fellow JLAer and friend Shazam. In fact, Shazam was going to be pro-Regulation. On the other hand, Cyborg was going to be against-Regulation.

But, resisting arrest would diminish Cyborg’s status as a Justice League member. In fact, given the nature of his tech, it would make Cyborg “Public Enemy #1.” Officially, a potential conflict between the government and the Justice League.

IN DC UNIVERSE

WHO STOLE BRUCE WAYNE’S PARENTS’ COFFINS?

In ‘JLA’ #43, Batman discovers the effects of mad science. Visiting his parents’ graves, Bruce Wayne finds out that their graves are empty and their coffins have been stolen. Faced with such a mystery, let’s wonder on the horrors of mad science.

Batman investigates the mystery and traces the theft to the sub-continent of Asia. The World’s Greatest Detective ends up at the nefarious headquarters of the wealthy and resourceful super-villain Ra’s Al Ghul and the League of Assassins.

RA’S AL GHUL’S PLAN OF WORLD DOMINATION

In ‘JLA’ #43, Ra’s Al Ghul laments species’ extinction over the Earth. He blames it on mankind’s parasitism and its exploitation of the Earth’s natural resources. What he fears are new extinction events on Earth caused by human activity. Whether that justifies his mad science is clearly in the negative.

In ‘JLA’ #44, the Justice League of America is under attack! Superman is working in Metropolis and realizes that everywhere people are reading scrambled words. Ra’s Al Ghul reveals to Batman in his mad science that his scientists have found a way to cause a global dyslexia in an effort to bring about an end time. And Batman’s parents? He plans to use the Lazarus Pit to raise them! But Batman had to be occupied by his parents’ coffins’ theft for Ra’s to implement his mad science.

CHECK OUT THE STORY: IN A FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH SUPERMAN AND SUPERGIRL, BRAINIAC INVADES EARTH

BATMAN’S MAD SCIENCE IS CONQUERING THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA

Ra’s Al Ghul reveals that he stole Batman’s contingency plans. In his mad science, Batman devised ways to stop the members of the JLA in the event that it ever went evil or succumbed to mind control.

Unfortunately, his plans were stolen by Ra’s who used them to incapacitate the JLA in his plan for world domination. In ‘JLA’ #43, Martian Manhunter is turned into a living torch by a rocket fired at him with nanites that transmute trace elements into magnesium.

In 'JLA' (2000) #44, Talia Al Ghul uses a synthetic red Kryptonite whose formula was stolen from Batman's contingency plans to cripple Superman.

Plastic Man has been turned brittle, and Aquaman has been fired with a toxin that makes him fear the water he needs to survive. Flash and Wonder Woman head to Green Lantern’s apartment and find he is blind. In ‘JLA’ #45, Martian Manhunter’s scan discovers that Kyle was put under a post-hypnotic suggestion during REM sleep as the assassins slipped his ring on his finger.

Flash and Wonder Woman are attacked by Talia Al Ghul and the League of Assassins. Wonder Woman is attacked with a VR Chip in her brain that simulates combat till she gets a heart attack. Flash has an electrostrobe attached to his spine that triggers epileptic seizures at lightspeed. Superman is crippled by an exposure to a synthetic red kryptonite. Martian Manhunter states that it caused his solar energy to blaze through his muscles and organs.

In 'JLA' #45, Batman's mad science leads to Ra's Al Ghul implementing the Tower Of Babel plan for world domination.

SHOULD BATMAN LEAVE THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA?

In ‘JLA’ #46, the JLA has succeeded in thwarting Ra’s Al Ghul’s ‘Tower Of Babel‘ and in stopping a biochemical virus that kills people on contact. The JLA must deal with the fallout of Batman’s betrayal. Batman’s mad science was a breach of trust that the JLA found the most serious. The JLA votes on whether to keep him a member. Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Plastic Man vote to remove Batman’s membership.

Martian Manhunter, Flash and Green Lantern vote to keep him. Superman cast the deciding vote. Knowing Superman’s vote, Batman left suggesting Superman would decide to remove Batman’s membership. The question raised by his action is put forth by the Flash during the vote: In his mad science, Batman operates on fear, whereas Superman operates on trust. Who is correct?
