5. I SURVIVED THE BATTLE OF D-DAY, 1944 (2019) BY LAUREN TARSHIS

Perhaps, one of the most well-documented children’s books in years. The pre-teen book tells the story of a significant event in history from a first-person account. In May, the graphic book joined the top 15 on the NY Times Best Sellers. With I Survived the Battle of D-Day, 1944 (I Survived #18) we have a story about 11-year old French boy Paul Colbert who helps the French Resistance during World War II.

Positives: Historical book, themes of identity and growing up.

Negatives: Graphic book needs more staying power on the NYT Best Sellers.

4. CLAUDIA AND THE BAD JOKE (2023) BY ANN M. MARTIN

Certainly, women authors and artists are a force for children’s books and indie comics. In fact, author set up the Ann M. Martin Foundation which provides grants to literacy programs and causes. The BSC graphic novel series is based on the author’s own experiences. Bibliophiles of comedy, coming-of-age and contemporary women stories will definitely love this graphic novel. Positives: Popular author, Baby-Sitters Club storytelling, recognition and philanthropy, year-long appearances on NY Times Best Sellers.

1. MY HERO ACADEMIA, VOL. 38 (2023) BY KOHEI HORIKOSHI

Gloriously, My Hero Academia continues the franchise. With critical acclaim, the storyline may be the best series of the franchise yet. With just a month after its English release, Volume 38 is already climbing up the Top 10. Certainly, it takes the third spot for its passionate and worldwide fanbase.

 

Positives: Worldwide fanbase, new storytelling, shonen, wide critical acclaim.

Negatives: None.

2. INFLUENCERS BY DAV PILKEY (2023)

Importantly, Pilkey has published a new series of children’s books with more popularity. With Cat Kid Comic Club: Influencers: A Graphic Novel (Cat Kid Comic Club #5): From the Creator of Dog Man, the fifth book in the new series, Pilkey continues his education for children to exercise their imagination. Incredibly, the series focuses on teaching The Baby Frogs how to create a comic.

Positives: Popular children’s author. Worldwide fame. Creative artistic techniques suited for children.

Negatives: Moved from pole position to outside Top 5 this year.

1. DAV PILKEY’S THE SCARLET SHEDDER (2023)

Worldwide, writer Dav Pilkey is known for his popular children book series such as Captain Underpants. Recently, his series titled Dog Man has been a success. Though obviously for children, the book can fascinate an adult public for its unconventional portrayal of the canine cop and its challenges to the force’s authority. In April, the graphic book joined the pole position on the NY Times Best Sellers.
