WHY MAGNETO IS THE MASTER OF MAGNETISM

Magneto in ‘X-Men’ (1991) #1. AP Photo/Marvel Comics.

As Homo superior, Magneto is the next phase of human evolution. Originally, the master of magnetism represents the mutant population which by accidents of evolution has been granted super powers. Magneto‘s mastery of magnetism is the super power to control, manipulate and shift magnetic fields on a planetary to solar system scale. In the past, the mutant powerhouse was once classified as an Alpha Level mutant. This has been changed to an Omega Level mutant. In fact, what is an Omega Level mutant?

Read on!

The term, initially “Omega Level Mutant Abilities” was seemingly used at first by Fred Duncan, and quickly adopted by Charles Xavier to define some of his first students, and was described in those terms: “Yet what he called Omega (the last) he meant as regards to an “ultimate threat,’ while I simply prefer to think of such mutant abilities as unlimited potential.

-“Mutant Power Level Classification”, Marvel Database

In other words, what makes Magneto an Omega Level mutant is power without limit. In fact, Magneto has been stated on several occasions to be the most powerful mutant on Earth.1,2,3 On another occasion, he has been called the most powerful being on Earth.4

PHOENIX IS MAGNETO’S RIVAL

In ‘X-Men’ (1978) #112, Magneto defeats Phoenix and Wolverine. Photo/Marvel Comics

In early X-men stories, the X-men regularly met Magneto as their foe. In ‘X-Men’ (1978) #112, the X-men return to Mesmero’s carnival trailer to find… Magneto. Eager to even the score with the X-Men, Magneto systematically subdues each member. Phoenix intervenes during the fight, and Magneto quickly defeats her by siphoning her Phoenix flame. Clearly, it has been stated that Magneto’s power rivals Phoenix’s.5 In Marvel continuity, Professor X and Magneto have been shown to match and defeat the Phoenix in duels.

In ‘New X-Men’ (2004) #150, the Omega Level mutant faces a resurrected Phoenix. During the battle, Jean Grey has the upper hand though Magneto is initially protected by his helmet from Phoenix’s telepathy. Finally, Magneto attacks Phoenix with a planetary electromagnetic pulse, giving her a heart attack. Both Omega Level mutants die: Phoenix dies while Magneto seemingly dies at the hand of Wolverine.

It appears Phoenix is Magneto’s limit as an Omega Level mutant. This means Magneto’s powers can at least match Phoenix’s at the Solar System Level. Of course, Phoenix has been classified as a Multiversal being, Beyond Omega Level.

MAGNETO (ERIK LENSHERR)
EARTH-616

In ‘AVX: VS’ (2012) #1, “The Invincible Iron Man vs Magneto,” Magneto performs an energy projection feat. During the fight, Magneto siphons the interplanetary magnetic field of the heliosphere.

How much energy projection does it take for Magneto to siphon the heliosphere?

MAGNETO SIPHONED THE MAGNETIC FIELD OF THE HELIOSPHERE IN ORDER TO COUNTER IRON MAN’S INTERPLANETARY ABSORPTION OF NEARBY PLANETS’ MAGNETIC FIELDS WITH THE BLEEDING EDGE ARMOR.

MAGNETO GENERATED 3 MICRO GAUSS OF MAGNETIC FIELD STRENGTH, SIPHONING THE MAGNETIC FIELD OF THE HELIOSPHERE.

Magneto counters Iron Man‘s interplanetary absorption of the interplanetary magnetic field with the Bleeding Edge Armor. Since Magneto uses the power of the sun we can assume it is the heliosphere.

We will use the heliosphere magnetic field strength to rate Magneto’s energy projection.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

According to The Heliosphere, Sol’s heliosphere has a magnetic field strength of 0.3 nanoTesla.

Let’s convert it in Gauss. One Gauss = 10^4 Tesla.

Magnetic Field = 0.3 nanoTesla = 0.3 * 10^-9 * 10^4 = 3 microGauss.

ENERGY PROJECTION

Magneto siphoned the energy of Sol’s heliosphere in order to counter Iron Man’s Bleeding Edge interplanetary energy absorption.

Magneto generated 3 microGauss of energy. Magneto had to generate a Solar System Level of Energy Projection in order to siphon the magnetic field of the heliosphere.

IN SUPER POWER EXPLAINED

Magneto is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. He is an enemy of the X-Men and an enemy of humanity. Magneto has on multiple occasions, attempted to destroy the human race in order to champion the cause of mutants.

Magneto is known as the Master of Magnetism and an Omega Level mutant. What is Magneto’s super power called Magnetism?

Read on!

Magnetokinesis: Magneto has comprehensive control over all forms of magnetism and utilizes that control to manipulate any metal and achieve a variety of effects. He recently proved able to effectively hold together the headless form of a Celestial. Magneto can manipulate an entire planet’s electromagnetic field and once even pulled back the giant metallic ‘bullet’ where Kitty Pryde was trapped inside, which was at least a few light-years away from Earth, though these are tasks that require great effort on his part. Magneto’s power is comparable with Phoenix’s, he has harnessed magnetism to stop armies, raise islands from ocean floors, move mountains, change the course of rivers, and threaten to devastate the world with floods and earthquakes.

Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616), Marvel Database

Because the Phoenix consumes stars, and Magneto matches her Power Level, it may seem that Magneto’s Power Level is Solar System+.

Let’s dig our comics!

‘X-MEN’ #112

In ‘X-Men’ (1978) #112, Magneto uses the super power of Magnetism to match the Phoenix’s cosmic power. Magneto shapes the Earth’s magnetosphere to create a “bottle-effect” around Phoenix, siphoning away her cosmic power.1 Magneto defeats Phoenix. However, this was a Phoenix that was growing in power.

During the ‘Dark Phoenix’ (1980) saga, Phoenix is driven insane by the fires of life and death, and causes the near extinction of the planet D’Bari by consuming its sun. This Power Level is definitely Solar System+.

In 'X-Men' (1980) #135, Phoenix consumes the D'Bari star causes the near extinction of the D'Bari.
In ‘X-Men’ (1980) #135, Phoenix consumes the D’Bari star causes the near extinction of the D’Bari. Photo/Marvel Comics.

At the end of the saga, Phoenix was killed by committing suicide. Of course, Phoenix ultimately resurrected and it turned out that the Phoenix is actually a cosmic firebird Multiversal in Power Level. Nevertheless, In ‘X-Men’ (1978) #112, Magneto was able to match the Phoenix’s power to be Solar System+ Power Level.

HOW POWERFUL IS MAGNETO?

IN ‘AVX:VS’ #1, IRON MAN IN BLEEDING EDGE ARMOR GOES TOE TO TOE WITH MAGNETO WHO WAS SIPHONING THE MAGNETIC ENERGY OF NEARBY PLANETS

In ‘Super Power Explained: How Smart Is Iron Man?’, we looked at Iron Man’s Bleeding Edge Armor. In ‘AvX: Vs’ #1, Magneto demonstrated he can siphon the magnetic power of nearby planets in the solar system. Magneto demonstrated at least a Stellar+ Power Level.

Since Magneto displayed Stellar+ power in his battle against Iron Man and was able to match Phoenix’s power, he is at least Stellar+ in Power Level. This indicates Magneto’s higher end power is Solar System+ since he can siphon the energy of nearby planets in the solar system and defeat Phoenix before she became Dark Phoenix.

As a result, Magneto’s Mastery of Magnetism extends to the solar system and is Solar System+ Level.

Super Power Explained: How Smart Is Iron Man?

SUPER POWER

IN SUPER POWER EXPLAINED

IRON MAN INVENTED THE BLEEDING EDGE ARMOR

Iron Man is one of the smartest beings in the Marvel Universe. He regularly comes up with advanced technology, battle plans, scientific discoveries and yes… Iron Man Hulkbuster Armors. In order to estimate how intelligent Iron Man may be, let’s look at an Iron Man Armor upgrade: The Bleeding Edge Armor.

Read on!

Deemed as “bleeding edge,” this armor was created as Tony Stark essentially reinvented himself and the armor. Being called an upgrade to Extremis by Mr. Fantastic, Tony Stark corrected this comment by saying, “Nah – this is what comes next.” It was the first armor powered entirely by repulsor technology via Stark’s new device, the R.T. node.

[…]

This entire armor is kept inside Tony’s body until mentally commanded, at which point it manifests itself as the Iron Man Armor. The armor is made up of Nano-Machines that can now be commanded to turn into any type of structure upon Stark’s skin. For example, the nano-machines can turn into clothes, other armors, or even different beings completely, by having the nano-machines change their properties into whatever Stark wants them to be. It can also dissociate to transform into the Iron Man armor whenever Stark wishes. The armor and Stark’s own transhuman body are powered by the high-yield R.T. node mounted in his chest. The high output of the node has greatly augmented Stark’s intelligence and provided him with superhuman-level multitasking and learning capabilities.

“Iron Man Armor Model 37, Marvel Database

WHAT IS THE R.T. NODE?

The R.T. node is Iron Man’s discovery of fusion power, which is the process that powers the sun. In effect, Iron Man called the Bleeding Edge Armor a “man-made star.”1

Read on!

The Repulsor Tech node, as called on Earth-616, is a type of fusion power which derived from the Repulsor Technology of the Iron Man suit created by Tony Stark. It can be used as a source for clean energy as well as a powerful bomb, further modifications made along Rand Industries discarding the second possible application.

Arc Reactor, Marvel Database

Tony Stark discovered a source of clean energy as well as the potential to make powerful thermonuclear bombs.

HOW STRONG IS THE BLEEDING EDGE ARMOR?

IN ‘AVX:VS’ #1, IRON MAN IN BLEEDING EDGE ARMOR GOES TOE TO TOE WITH MAGNETO WHO WAS SIPHONING THE MAGNETIC ENERGY OF NEARBY PLANETS

In 'AvX: Vs' #1, Bleeding Edge Armor Iron Man goes toe to toe with Magneto.
In ‘AvX: Vs’ #1, Bleeding Edge Armor Iron Man goes toe to toe with Magneto. AP Photo/Marvel Comics.

The Bleeding Edge Iron Man Armor is able to go toe to toe with an Omega Level mutant. Since Magneto was siphoning the magnetic energy of nearby planets, the Bleeding Edge Iron Man Armor is able to withstand planetary to solar level power. This means it is at least Planetary in Power Level.

HOW SMART IS IRON MAN?

Iron Man’s IQ has been rated as super-genius, with the likes of beings like Thanos. Ben Sherlock from CBR.com writes:

Lex Luthor’s IQ is estimated to be 225, which is very impressive. Batman’s is 192, while Albert Einstein’s is thought to be between 160 and 180. So, Batman has a higher IQ than Albert Einstein, but Lex Luthor has a higher IQ than Batman. However, compare Lex’s to Tony Stark’s, which is 270, and it doesn’t seem so impressive. Tony’s IQ of 270 is extremely high. It makes him certifiably a “super genius” and puts him in the smartest 0.1% of the world’s population. 225 is still an incredible IQ score, but it’s not in the top 0.1% of the world.

“9 Questions About Lex Luthor, Answered,” CBR.com

Iron Man mastered the fusion process that powers the solar nuclear reactor. This is revolutionary in the sense that it promises to create clean energy that can power human industry. Iron Man built a Bleeding Edge Iron Man and is capable of at least creating a statistical model of the lifetime of a star from its beginning stages to supernova. Furthermore, Iron Man is able to apply theory to physics and engineering.

The Bleeding Edge Iron Man Armor achieves two things: fusion power and nano-technology. Because Iron Man realized these feats of engineering, his creative intelligence is at least intelligent enough to process all the information on the Internet since this is the technology that connects the entirety of Marvel Earth.

In fact, in real-world terms, the orbiting space telescope GALEX that detects stellar and space objects produces about petabytes of data in its catalogs. This means Iron Man is able to process at least petabytes of data in order to create the Bleeding Edge Iron Man Armor.

Professor X’s mutation is telepathy, which is the ability to hear the thoughts of others. In his mother’s womb, Charles recognized his twin as evil and attempted to kill it, causing his mother’s miscarriage. Professor X is the mutant son of wealthy nuclear researcher Dr. Brian Xavier and his wife Sharon-Xavier Marko.

Charles’ childhood years were filled with abuse and drama. His mother re-married his father’s colleague after his death, Dr. Kurt Marko. As his mutant powers arose, at around ten, Charles became bald. Charles formed a telepathic link with Dr. Marko’s son Cain Marko, who later became the Juggernaut, as well as his mother; both Cain and Sharon suffered abuse from Dr. Marko.

Dr. Marko had married Sharon for money. When Sharon learnt that Dr. Marko did not have feelings for her, she became an alcoholic. She died heart-broken, leaving Charles with Dr. Marko and Cain’s abusive relationships.

AN ALPHA LEVEL MUTANT

Professor X has been classified as an Alpha Level mutant. From an entry titled “Charles Xavier (Earth-616)” on Marvel Database:

“Powers

Charles Xavier is an Alpha-Level Mutant, said to possess the most powerful brain in existence, and to be the world’s greatest telepath possessing vast psionic powers:

Telepathy: Xavier is able to read minds and project his own thoughts into the minds of others within a radius of 250 miles (on Earth). With extreme effort he can greatly extend that radius. When synched with Cerebro or Cerebra, he can connect to every mind on a planet. After he was thrown into the M’Kraan Crystal, it not only restored his mutation, but made his telepathy more powerful than it had been previously, thereby making him the world’s most powerful telepath once again.

Professor X is a genius intellect with PhDs in Genetics and Biophysics from Oxford University. Professor X met with Fred Duncan investigating the growing number of mutants. Professor X told Duncan of his plan to locate mutant youngsters and enroll them at his “School For Gifted Youngsters.” Professor X planned on protecting the mutants from human oppression, giving them an education and teach them how to use their abilities. Using a mutant detection device called Cerebro, Professor X set on locating the mutant youngsters.

Cerebro is an ESP (Extra-Sensory Perception) machine that amplifies a telepath’s brainwaves and speeds up the user’s brain neuron speed. Only experienced telepaths can use Cerebro since non-telepaths can be overwhelmed.

Read on!

Cerebro’s main function was to locate mutant signatures, but was also integrated in the mansion, as the school’s A. I. Cerebro served the Professor for many years and, at times, was used against him. After the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants kidnapped young Emma FrostMagneto took her to Xavier’s School, to use Cerebro and kill all humans. During the invasion of the alien Z’Nox, Prof. Xavier used Cerebro to probe every human mind on the planet. On one occasion, Warhawk was hired, by the White Queen, to leave a bug in Cerebro, that enabled her to access Professor Xavier’s findings on Cerebro. After Nightcrawler was injured in battle and lost, Shadowcat re-calibrated Cerebro, for non telepaths to use, to search for Nightcrawler and Phoenix.

IN ORIGINS

WHO ARE THE NEW MUTANTS?

By Betty Brant

“We are living in the sixth Age of Homo Superior, the Sextant!”

These are the words of Sunspot, leader of the mutant super-powered team, the New Mutants.

Sitting during our interview on the mutant island nation of Krakoa, I am mesmerized by the paradisiacal feel of it all! Lush verdure, breathtaking scenery and the sense of community where these young people, teenagers for the most part, are finally home.

Who are these New Mutants?

The New Mutants: Karma, Wolfsbane, Mondo, Cypher, Mirage, Sunspot, Chamber and Magik.
In ‘New Mutants’ (2020) #1 The New Mutants team appears: Sunspot, Mirage, Cypher, Chamber, Magik, Karma, Wolfsbane and Mondo. Photo/Marvel Comics

The New Mutants were originally meant to continue Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters after Xavier’s failure to protect his most beloved proteges, such as Jean Grey who later became the Dark Phoenix and died multiple times. They were a young team, bred by Xavier to hone their powers and integrate into a community.

Things have changed a lot since the 20th century for this group of super-powered beings once regarded as rebels, renegades and outcasts.

Since the modern period, the emergence of Professor Xavier and his X-Men and of Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, came the first wide-scale emergence of mutants on the Earth, as Mirage explains. Then, the mutant population exploded.

In 'X-Men Unlimited' (1994) #7, Magneto appears with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
In ‘X-Men Unlimited’ (1994) #7, Magneto appears with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Photo/Marvel Comics

Mirage, leads the New Mutants with Sunspot. A mutant with the power to read minds and sense emotions, Mirage detailed her own struggle with the New Mutants, from losing her powers to an Asgardian goddess to being infected by the Transmode Virus which made her feel like a living computer virus!

Since Krakoa, however, everything has changed for the New Mutants. The Sextant, the Sixth Age of mutants has come and Krakoa has become the island nation-state for the mutant population where they feel welcome despite their difference and unique talents.

I left the New Mutants as they embarked on their new top-secret adventure in space. It is a way to continue a long body of work of space travel, missions around the world and yes… community work.
