IN READING GUIDES, LISTS, REVIEWS

In the Marvel multiverse, the Avengers are the premiere superhero-team. In battles to defend Earth and the universe against villains, tyrants, and conquerors, two Avengers challenge each other for the title of Strongest Avenger. Indeed, the Thor-Hulk rivalry has been since the classic era and continues to this day. Hulk, is the Jade Giant with infinite strength and rage, and Thor is the Thunder God and protector of Earth.

Let’s list five reasons why Hulk’s monstrous strength makes him the Strongest Avenger and five reasons why Thor’s godly power contends for the Strongest Avenger.

10. THOR MATCHED HULK IN AN HOUR TEST OF STRENGTH

In Defenders (1973) #10, Doctor Strange guides Hulk to Los Angeles where he finds the missing part of the Evil Eye. At that time, Thor also arrives looking for the Evil Eye. When the God of Thunder asks to speak to the Jade Giant, Hulk is dismissive. Violently, a brawl follows between the warriors. During the battle, their power is so fierce that the city is threatened. Incredibly, both combatants lock arms for one hour in a test of strength. Finally, Doctor Strange, the Defenders and Avengers arrive to separate them. In the end, the heroes realize that a greater force, namely Dormammu, is involved in the events.

9. IT TOOK HULK AND NAMOR TO FIGHT CLASSIC THOR

In Avengers (1964) #3, Hulk and Namor team-up against the Avengers. When the Avengers decide to find the Hulk, they contact Rick Jones. With his help, they locate him in the desert. After a battle, he escapes and teams-up with Sub-Mariner. At the Rock of Gibraltar, the final battle occurs. During the fight, Namor and Hulk can barely hold on to the mighty Thor. In the end, the enemies flee with the Avengers victorious.

8. IN MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, THOR HAS MATCHED HULK WITHOUT HIS HAMMER

In Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), Nick Fury activates the Avengers Initiative to recruit exceptional people into the peace-keeping team called the Avengers. With the Tesseract, Loki signals a Chitauri invasion in New York City. Before the invasion, Thor battles Hulk on the Helicarrier, matching the behemoth without his hammer! In Thor (1987) #385, Thor must stop Hulk’s rampage in a forest near the Mississippi River. When Hulk holds a woman hostage, Thor is forced to fight without his hammer. Though at a disadvantage, he holds his own.

7. HULK HAS LIFTED THOR’S HAMMER

In Hulk: Let The Battle Begin (2010) #1, Bruce Banner awakens in the middle of the desert. There, he find a ride from a man driving a truck who drops him off to a nearby town. In between naps, Bruce has been having trouble with his memories. In his naps, he recalls the events of the previous day. Near Mount Rushmore, he recalls lifting Thor’s hammer and bludgeoning the Odinson with it till he is knocked out. Really, an impressive feat!

6. IN MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, THOR DREW WITH HULK

In Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), Thor’s superior fighting skills, equal strength and powerful hammer drew the battle against Hulk. In Thor: Ragnarok (2012), though Hulk won, he had help from the Grandmaster.

5. IN THE HULK VS. ANIMATED FILM, THE JADE GIANT NEARLY KILLED THOR

In Hulk Vs. (2009), Hulk fights Wolverine in the first movie and Thor in the second movie. The events in the movie follow after or during Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. In Hulk Vs. Thor, the soulless body of Hulk has been unleashed on Asgard by Loki and Amora. In a brutal battle, Hulk pummels Thor to the ground. When Hulk is about to land the killing blow, he sees the light of Odinsleep and heads for the palace. Believing himself dead, Thor sees a shadow thinking it is Hela, but it is Amora.

4. IN THOR: RAGNAROK, HULK FOUGHT FENRIS AND SURTUR

In Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Thor, Hulk and Valkyrie must stop Hela, Surtur and her demons from destroying Asgard. In the final battle, Thor battles Hela while Hulk battles the ferocious Fenris then attacks Surtur, a giant extra-dimensional demon. With the power to destroy Asgard, Surtur finds a match in Hulk who can shake a dimension!

3. IN AVENGERS: ENDGAME, THOR KILLED A WOUNDED THANOS

In Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame (2019), the Avengers are recovering from the Thanos Snap. When the Avengers regroup, they set out for Titan to undo the damages. There, they find a wounded Thanos. Unfortunately, Thanos reveals that they cannot undo the Snap since he destroyed the Infinity Stones. In a fit of anger, Thor decapitates Thanos with Stormbreaker.

2. HERALD OF THUNDER THOR KILLS GALACTUS AND THE BLACK WINTER

In Thor: The Devourer King (2020), Thor becomes a Herald of Thunder for Galactus. In order to fight the Black Winter, Thor helps the Star God consume five planets. However, when he realizes he has been duped, he kills Galactus and uses his corpse as a bomb to explode the Black Winter. Certainly, do not miss Thor using the God Blast against the Black Winter!

1. IMMORTAL HULK DISSIPATED THE ONE-BELOW-ALL WITH HIS THUNDERCLAP

Really, Hulk is the strongest Avenger. In Immortal Hulk (2019) #13, Hulk is in Hell with his father. There, he must fight the One Below All and his horde of demons. During the battle, his father disowns him as a child of evil. When all seems lost, Immortal Hulk hulks-out and delivers a powerful thunderclap that dissipates the One Below All. In the Marvel multiverse, The One Above All is supreme, and at the bottom of the multiverse, the One Below All reigns. Proving once again that the Strongest Avenger can defeat the ultimate evil.

Super Power: How Silver Surfer’s Power Cosmic Matches Against Mjolnir, Thor’s Enchanted Hammer (Film, TV and Comic)

IN COSMIC HIERARCHY

IN MARTIAL ARTS

*To celebrate Thor: Love & Thunder currently showing, we publish this article on Marvel’s top two heroes.

SILVER SURFER AND THOR ARE MARVEL’S TWO STRONGEST HEROES

In 2021, King in Black concluded with an emphatic victory for Venom and Marvel heroes. After defeating Knull, Venom became the new King in Black endowed with omniscience and omnipotence. Though the power hierarchy at Marvel has changed, two heroes have remained its strongest defenders.

In fact, Silver Surfer and Thor are the heroes the Marvel Universe calls upon during the most critical times. When Knull battled the universe again, he invaded Earth with his hordes of dragons and Klyntar.

When all seemed hopeless, Cosmic King Thor battled Knull one-on-one but was eventually defeated. After, the Enigma Force used Silver Surfer who transported the God of Light to Earth to resume his epic battle against Knull. However, the Enigma Force chose Venom as Captain Universe.

Let’s look at how Silver Surfer’s Power Cosmic and Thor’s Enchanted Hammer match against each other across various media.

TV: THE POWER COSMIC IS FOR SPACE TRAVEL

Skelton Jerlene

In 1998, Marvel Entertainment Group produced Silver Surfer: The Animated Series. In a 13-episode season, the series showcased Surfer’s adventures across the cosmos in order to find his homeworld Zenn-La.

For the most part, the cosmic adventures broke story-rules and the finale even had an unexpected ending. However, one important aspect of the character is that the Power Cosmic grants him vast space travel powers.

In fact, the cosmic hero is able to engage in space battles against alien armadas, dodge comets or even travel through wormholes. In the finale, Silver Surfer even travels in a universe where time is flowing backwards!

TV: THOR’S MJOLNIR IS ENCHANTED

In What If? Season 1 Episode 7, in an alternature timeline Thor is raised without his adopted brother Loki. Certainly, he grows up a brash and party-loving youth. On Earth, Captain Marvel comes to stop Thor’s shenanigans.

Then, a rumble follows where both combatants spend more time testing each other than getting serious. In multiple instances, Mjolnir is lost but returns to Thor’s side. Certainly, the enchanted hammer is mystically linked to Thor and is the source of half the god’s power.

FILM: SILVER SURFER CAN DISH OUT PLANET-BUSTING ATTACKS

FilmeyBox

Though critics did not receive the first Fantastic Four film series very well, the movies still succeeded in captivating audiences. In fact, Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer delivered awesome action scenes and amazing visuals of Silver Surfer’s CG.

In fact, CBR.com commended the production team on the character design, on Silver Surfer’s other-worldliness and the use of his powers. Perhaps, the most exhilarating scene is the Human Torch‘s high-speed chase of SS from the New York overpass all the way to the upper atmosphere.

However, the conclusion of the movie raises the stakes. In order to save the Earth from impending doom, Silver Surfer dishes out a planet-busting attack and destroys the Devourer of Worlds. Here, the FX are a bit disappointing as Galactus appears as a cosmic space storm.

FILM: THOR’S MJOLNIR CAN BLOW UP A CITY

RAZR

Certainly, Marvel Avengers: Age of Ultron performed massively at the box office internationally. However, at Rottentomatoes, critics criticized the film’s over-the-top action and villain. Nevertheless, the movie showed how much the Avengers can accomplish as a squad.

In the final battle, Thor and the Avengers have to battle Ultron and his robot copies in Sokovia in the air. And their objective is to protect the drill, Ultron wants to activate in order to send Sokovia into free fall. In the end, they manage to destroy most of the copies as well as the prime A.I.

However, one of the remaining sentries manages to activate the drill. As Sokovia enters free fall, Iron Man speeds to the bottom of the city, and Thor at the top. When Iron Man overloads the drill, Thor delivers a massive blast of lightning that destroys the city.

COMIC: SILVER SURFER CREATED THE SEEDS OF LIFE

In 'Silver Surfer' (2019) #5, Silver Surfer transforms his board into a sword.

In Silver Surfer: Black, the Sentinel of the Spaceways travels through a black hole and accidentally ends up at the beginning of time. In an effort, to end the threat of Galactus, Surfer ends up fighting Knull, the God of the Living Abyss.

Outmatched, Silver Surfer is contaminated by Knull’s darkness and is turning black. In their final battle, the Sentinel of the Spaceways realizes the threat to the universe. In order for darkness not to consume the beginning, Silver Surfer creates a star.

As the new Galactus is born with the universe, the light of the Surfer is the seed for the new universe. Incredibly, Silver Surfer manages to rout the powerful Knull.

COMIC: COSMIC KING THOR EXECUTED GALACTUS

Thor (2020) #6. Marvel Comics.

Perhaps, one of the most ground-breaking developments in Thor continuity. In order to stem the Black Winter, Galactus and Silver Surfer recruit King Thor’s help. Endowed with the Power Cosmic and Mjolnir, he becomes Cosmic King Thor, Herald of Thunder.

In the conclusion of the story arc, Thor actually executes Galactus for his numerous crimes and genocides using the powerful God blast.

In the Marvel Universe, Hulk sits at the top of the powerhouses. Indeed, his dynamic strength, gamma radiation physiology, regeneration and unlimited strength make him the strongest hero. In the massive World War Hulk crossover, Hulk defeated Earth’s powerhouses to conquer the planet. Finally, his rampage was put to an end in battle against Sentry. At the end of the fight, both warriors reverted to their human forms. However, Bruce Banner was the last one standing while Robert Reynolds collapsed. Indeed, proving Hulk is the strongest there is.

However, if strength is one thing, power is quite another. If strength is about raw potential, power is about strength, skill and mastery. Over the years, Hulk has faced foes with overwhelming power who have definitely defeated him. Let’s list heroes and villains who are more powerful than Hulk.

HEROES AND VILLAINS MORE POWERFUL

DOCTOR DOOM

In 'Incredible Hulk' (2011) #7, Doctor Doom defeats Perfect Hulk.
In Incredible Hulk (2011) #7, Doctor Doom defeats Perfect Hulk. DC Comics.

In the Marvel Universe, no supervillain is more lustful and proud than Doctor Doom. Generally, Doctor Doom does not want to destroy the world. Really, the Baron of Iron intends to rule.

Despite his unlimited strength, Hulk has weaknesses. Among his weaknesses, is magic. Particularly, Doctor Doom is unique for his union of science and sorcery. In fact, he is a powerful mage who once contended as a runner-up for the title of Sorcerer Supreme.

In a battle, Doctor Doom’s invulnerable Armor, mystic blasts and esoteric powers are more than a match for Hulk’s strength. Furthermore, Doom’s super-genius intelligence can definitely exploit Hulk’s lack of intelligence.

In Incredible Hulk (2011) #7, Doctor Doom defeats Perfect Hulk. In the issue, Doom separated Hulk from Bruce Banner creating Perfect Hulk. Later, Hulk returns blaming Doom for the Behemoth having killed Bruce Banner. Soon, a fight follows. Though short-lived, it highlights Doctor Doom’s magic and intelligence advantages.

Definitely, Doctor Doom ranks among the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.

COSMIC KING THOR

In 'Thor' (2020) #6, Cosmic King Thor kills Galactus.
In Thor (2020) #6, Cosmic King Thor kills Galactus. Marvel Comics.

Over the years, Thor and Hulk have been considered rivals. Though, Hulk has often been considered the strongest Avenger. At IGN, Jesse Schedeen argues Thor Just Managed to Kill [Spoiler], Proving He Actually Is the Strongest Avenger.

In 2020, Cosmic King Thor dramatically outclassed the competition. During Donny Cates’ run, titled Devourer King, King Thor becomes Cosmic King Thor, Herald of Galactus. To begin, Galactus and Silver Surfer come to Asgard to warn of the Black Winter. To stop it, Thor agrees to become Galactus’ Herald.

However, it comes at a cost. To prepare for the calamity, Thor helps Galactus consume five planets. Finally, the Black Winter arrives. After testing Thor, it reveals the King dreadful visions of the future. In the end, Thor realizes that he must fulfill Galactus’ prophecy: he is the one to kill Galactus. In one powerful blast, Thor throws his hammer at the Star God, incinerating him immediately.

And considering Thor’s godblast is Universal-Level and a fully-fed Galactus can withstand the core of a galaxy. Definitely, at least a Universal-Level of Energy Projection.

Without a doubt, Hulk has the potential for Infinite Super Strength. Though, Thor’s energy projection can deal some serious damage. In a battle, it is a matter of whether Hulk can withstand a Universe-busting attack from Thor.

ANNIHILATION SILVER SURFER

In Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus (2007) #2, Silver Surfer absorbs the energy of the Big Crunch to defeat Proemial Gods. Marvel Comics.

To this day, Annihilation Silver Surfer is the most popular version of the character. For good measure. During the Annihilation event, Silver Surfer and the United Front fight off an invasion from the Negative Zone. To this end, Annihilus aided by Thanos, has imprisoned Galactus to use as a bomb.

In order to face this crisis, Galactus increases Surfer’s power. Though, he tampers with his personality. Back to active service, Silver Surfer becomes a challenger to even Thor post-Annihilation.

Amazingly, one of the Sentinel’s most well-known feats during Annihilation, is his fight against two Proemial Gods. Notably, Proemial Gods derive their powers from the Big Crunch, the end of the universe.

In Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus (2007) #2, Silver Surfer defeats Tenebrous and Aegis. Initially, no match for the two gods, Silver Surfer lays in space badly wounded. Then, he elects to absorb the energies of the Big Crunch. Soon, he fells his foes. Fortunately, Galactus arrives and heals Surfer who is near death.

In the Marvel Universe, Silver Surfer is one of the top energy manipulators. Over the years, Silver Surfer has dominated Hulk in battles. Using the Power Cosmic, the Silver Surfer has often tampered with Hulk’s rage. In effect, calming the monster and reverting him to Bruce Banner.

Visit Silver Surfer vs Thor.

VOID SENTRY

In Siege (2010) #4, Thor and the Avengers face Void Sentry.

At Marvel, there have been many Marvel Supermen versions: Hyperion, Blue Marvel, Gladiator and even Sentry. Among them, Sentry has been the most successful. Perhaps, the most powerful Marvel Superman.

What makes Sentry tick is the fact that he is mentally unstable with the overwhelming power of a god. In fact, he has been stated to possess the power of a million exploding suns.

In World War Hulk, Sentry clashed with Hulk’s most powerful version. What resulted, was a thrilling fight with planet-busting punches and a tornado of searing energy blasts. Both characters went all-out. And at the end, only Bruce Banner was left standing.

However, that was not Sentry’s most powerful version. In Siege (2010) #4, Thor and the Avengers faced Void Sentry. As Void Sentry, Robert Reynolds is an abstract being of horrifying power. Moreover, the entity literally thrashed the entire Avengers team. Indeed, only the power of a god – a Thunder God – is able to conquer him. Proving that when push comes to shove, Thor and Sentry rank ahead of Hulk in terms of power.

Super Power: Thor’s God Blast Unleashes The Hero’s Godly Power

Thor Talk

IN MARVEL COMICS

THOR’S GODLY POWER

In 'Thor' (1989) #412, Thor unleashes the God Blast to push the Juggernaut backward!
In ‘Thor’ (1989) #412, Thor unleashes the God Blast to push the Juggernaut backward! Photo/Marvel Comics

Today, we look at Thor’s terrifying super power. I speak of the God Blast.

Thor Odinson is the King of Asgard. After the War of the Realms storyline, Odin appointed Thor as King of Asgard. Thor is among the most powerful of Asgardians, second only to Odin if not more powerful. In battles of cosmic import, Thor is capable of unleashing his most terrifying super power: The God Blast.

Read on!

God Blast: Thor is capable of channeling different amounts of his godly energies in combination with the mystical properties of Mjolnir. These energies can be channeled through his hammer for a single massive energy beam known as the God Blast which is able to kill even immortals.[228][229] Thor channeled his godly energies into Mjolnir to destroy the Brain Dome of the mighty Celestial Exitar,[228] the hammer shattered from the amount of power Thor channeled. The God Blast is so immensely powerful and destructive that it has proven capable of causing such a great degree of damage to a starving Galactus that he was forced to flee for his life.[230] The God Blast was also shown to be capable of knocking down the skymother Majeston Zelia.[231] Thor can send the God Blast to the core of Ego the Living Planet and Alter Ego and render both comatose.[232]

Thor Odinson (Earth-616), Marvel Database

The God Blast is Thor’s own godly power. He is able to unleash it with the mystical hammer Mjolnir and on his own. It is capable of challenging and harming cosmic beings. Let’s look at some battles in comics where Thor used this destructive super power.

IN ‘THOR’ (1989) #412, THOR UNLEASHES THE GOD BLAST TO PUSH THE JUGGERNAUT BACKWARD

In ‘Thor’ (1989) #412, Thor unleashes the God Blast to push the Juggernaut backward! Photo/Marvel Comics

In ‘Thor’ (1989) #412, Thor and the New Warriors face the menace of the Juggernaut in New York City. Unable to stop the Juggernaut with a lightning attack, Thor focuses his irresistible super power. Thor unleashes the God Blast to push the Juggernaut backward.

The Juggernaut falls inside a crater. Firestar uses her microwaves to melt steel girders around Juggernaut into molten slag. Thor hardens the molten slag with a cold wind.

Then, Thor banishes the forlorn Juggernaut to a distant dimension. Thor and the New Warriors win by battlefield removal.

WINNER: THOR WINS BY BATTLE FIELD REMOVAL

IN ‘THOR’ (1969) #161, THOR LASHES OUT A BEAM OF GOD BLAST AT GALACTUS FROM EGO THE LIVING PLANET

In 'Thor' (1969) #161, Thor lashes out the fury of the God Blast at Galactus from Ego The Living Planet.

In ‘Thor’ (1969) #161, Thor and Recorder are drifting in space after Thor’s ship has been destroyed by the battle between Galactus and Ego The Living Planet. They are rescued by the Wanderers who seek Galactus’ destruction. Thor accepts to aid.

Thor strikes Galactus with his hammer causing Galactus pain for the first time in his existence. Thor attempts a frontal attack but Galactus has erected a force field. Galactus then tosses Thor to the surface of Ego The Living Planet.

Then, the Wanderers, Recorder and Thor construct a weapon that allows Thor to channel the energies of his terrifying super power. Thor lashes out a beam of God Blast at Galactus from Ego The Living Planet. The attack results for Galactus to be in agony and causes him to flee for fear of death.

WINNER: THOR WINS BY INCAPACITATION

In ‘Thor’ (2020) #5, during the Devourer King storyline, the Black Winter has arrived in the 616 Universe. Galactus is terrified at the Black Winter that orders him to shut up. The Black Winter calls Cosmic King Thor by “The All-Butcher” or the “End-God” and asks him if he wants to see his end.1

Thor finds himself in an Escherian maze of staircases, the Black Winter stating that it asked him a question. Thor furiously demanding for the Black Winter to show itself, the Black Winter stating that the arena Thor is in is an extension of itself, but that he cannot defeat it. Offering Thor the gift of the truth of how he will die. Thor shouts that he’s not afraid of the end, the Black Winter sneering that the end isn’t afraid of him either. Attacked from behind, Thor looks up in horror to see Gorr the God-Butcher seemingly alive and once-more bonded to the All-Black symbiote. As Gorr brandishes his Necrosword and gloats, Thor incredulously protests that he’d killed Gorr years ago, then angrily snarls that he’ll gladly do so again. Before Thor can attack, he’s impaled from behind by a spear and turns to see the original Loki, who gleefully mocks him. Snapping the spear, Thor bashes Gorr with Mjolnir and shouts at the Black Winter that he has had enough. The Black Winter sneers that Thor hasn’t nearly had enough as MangogJormungandMalekith, the EnchantressMephistoSurturApocalypse, the JuggernautAnnihilus, and Doctor Doom appear. As Thor struggles against the horde of top-tier supervillains, the Black Winter muses that Thor has had many scrapes with death over the centuries of his life – naming the Beyonder and the Serpent as some examples before listing the various ways in which Thor has been killed. Finally, it brings up what was supposed to be his true end: fighting one-armed and one-eyed alongside his brother against the resurrected Gorr at the end of time, before sacrificing himself to hold off entropy. As Surtur and Magog punch Thor into Jormungand’s gaping maw, the Black Winter sneers that something has altered history’s course – slithering through time to kill Thor’s destiny and break his fate. As Thor breaks free from the Midgard Serpent’s jaws, the Black Winter asks if he wants it to show him how it all truly ends.
