Over the years, India has seen an emergence of women willing to confront sexism and the patriarchy. Today, the case of abuse and rape against women in India is particularly alarming.

5. SRIDEVI: TRADITIONAL ROLES
Unfortunately, the iconic Indian actress Sridevi passed away in an accident in 2018. Importantly, she is the first female superstar in Bollywood. With English Vinglish (2012), the iconic actress tackled traditional roles for the Indian woman as housewife and provider of the family. Her work remains a testament to the important achievements of Indian women in Bollywood.

4. ANUSHKA SHARMA: BODY IMAGE

In 2014, Anushka Sharma starred along Aamir Khan in the sci-fi satire PK. Though less popular than the other thespians on this list, Anushka has criticized the view of Indian women in the industry. Importantly, body image and objectification have remained an issue.
Positives: Sincere, criticism of body image and female objectification in Bollywood, sci-fi role.
Negatives: Not enough commercial success.
3. KANGANA RANAUT: FEMALE EMPOWERMENT
Perhaps, no contemporary Indian actress is more committed to female empowerment than Kangana Ranaut. Certainly, a household name in Bollywood for her lead role in “Queen” (2014). Brilliantly, she has directed her own movie in “Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi” (2019). However, her commitment to female empowerment has been opposed and she has been criticized for directing her movie. In her interview with PTI, she stated that the success of “Wonder Woman” (2017) and female director Patty Jenkins has opened the way for other women.

Negatives: More fame worldwide is needed.
2. VIDYA BALAN: SEXISM

In India, Vidya Balan is among the most popular actresses. Certainly, her breakthrough into Bollywood came eight years after her debut in Bengali movie “Bhaalo Theko” starring with Joy Sengupta. Also, the actress starred in the successful “Kahaani” (2012) movie about a pregnant woman who travels from London to Kolkata to find her missing husband. On multiple occasions, she has criticized the sexism in the industry concerning movie roles and actors’ scheduling.
Positives: Legendary actress, overcame hurdles related to sexism and body image.
Negatives: Not popular enough worldwide.
1. DEEPIKA PADUKONE: WOMEN’S HEALTH
Gloriously, Deepika Padukone is a mainstream Bollywood and Hollywood actress. Particularly, she starred in the sequel, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (2017). A well-known actress in Bollywood, she has starred in box-office successes such as Cocktail (2014) and the Hindi-language comedy drama Piku (2015). Certainly, a household name, a professional and a columnist who has worked to defend women’s health and fitness.
