For our very first Anime/Manga article, we compared Goku and One-Punch Man. For dedicated fans, who have been following the media, manga and anime produce some of the most gravity-defying and exhilarating fights in all fandom.
In today’s article, we compare two mystics that are the best in terms of fighting spirit, character, friendship and yes… techniques!
Though both universes have never met, what would happen in a battle between the strongest Straw Hat Pirate Luffy and the mystical Kagome Higurashi?
Really, both are A-list and B-list heroes in their respective universes. Namely, the iconic Luffy appeared last year in the One Piece (2023) live-action series on Netflix. For her part, Kagome appeared in the popular Inuyasha (2000-2004) series in both the manga and anime.
Though both heroes have shown a variety of attacks against metahumans and supernatural forces, let’s compare their strength in terms of fighting villains. Hence, we compare Aang in Gear 1 vs Kagome with Sacred Arrows.
KI AND POWER LEVELS
Generally, the concept of power levels understood scientifically or physically is not useful in anime and manga. In fact, this is due to the concept of ki.
In anime and manga, characters’ strengths are not dependent on how much physical strength they can exert, or how much they can lift. Instead, they depend on their ability to use their natural life force for devastating attacks, super speed or abilities such as flying.
In many respects, these are an application of martial arts and Chinese philosophies to the arts of fighting and war. For these reasons, we compare these warriors in terms of formidability.
FORMIDABILITY
Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy.
For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Level. For example, this explains why Batman is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful.
Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.
Before we rank our two heroes, let’s list some rules.
- First, the hero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
- In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
- Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
- Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.
First, we will compare them in Class, Weaknesses, Quality Opponents and Limitations. Then, let’s rank Luffy in Gear 1 vs Kagome with Sacred Arrows in Formidability. To note, all scores are rated out of a 100.

1. STRENGTH CLASS
Generally, Luffy is among the strongest of the Straw Hat Pirates. In fact, as a Pirate, he derives his power from eating the Devil Fruit when he was seven years old. Importantly, his body is composed of rubber and can bend, stretch, twist and bounce as long as he can imagine it.
At the same time, it seems his power can be measured directly in terms of concussive force and body transmutation. Certainly, at Gear 1, Luffy’s rubber body is able to punch out a Sea King, a Class C monster reminiscent of the fiery dragon.
With incredible feats of strength and the Sea King’s Continent-Level Durability, Gear 1 Luffy is at least Continent-Level in Super Strength.
On the other hand, Kagome seeks to protect the multiple fragments of a magical artifact from a demon. With the help of Inuyasha, they search Japan for the fragments in order to unite them.
Though, Kagome does not display many lifting feats and is largely a human priestess, her striking strength without the Secret Arrows is Peak Human-Level and higher.
Since she is a reincarnated priestess, her incredible power is largely supernatural. With the Sacred Arrows, Kagome is able to fire arrows of incredible supernatural energy even with the power to destroy buildings. For these reasons, in terms of power, her Strength-Level is City-Block to City-Level.
Though Luffy has the advantage in physical strength, it must be stated that Kagome’s spiritual power is suited to fighting against the mystical power of the Devil Fruit.

2. WEAKNESSES
For the most part, Luffy’s main weaknesses have been his low level of intelligence and his gluttony. As the Pirate King, Luffy deals with comedic situations on a daily basis and must use his resourcefulness to solve problems.
However, his sense of humor and his gluttony are traits that can be exploited in battles. Indeed, the One Piece manga series is largely parody and the situations lack seriousness. On the other hand, Inuyasha deals with more religious themes.
Generally, Kagome Igurashi seeks to protect Japan from a demonic force called Naraku that attacks fragments of a magical Jewel and works to unite them. For the most part, Kagome’s main weaknesses are her emotions and her reliance on her bow.
With more emotional power, she can have more spiritual power with the Sacred Arrows. When her emotions are small, she has smaller spiritual power with her arrows. Though she is also able to concentrate her spiritual power into parts of her body for attacks or defense.
Overall, Luffy has a slight advantage in terms of Weakness since he is a Metahuman but his comedy and hubris can help Kagome fight him as long as she has her Sacred Arrows since she is Peak Human.

3. QUALITY OPPONENTS
Perhaps, the most challenging area to consider. Luffy’s most dangerous foes tend to be either transformed pirates, armies or mythological creatures. At the same time, Luffy’s incredible power allows him to fight entire teams and even mythological creatures.
Though their physical strength is often around Peak Human, their Power Level or ki tends to be around Metahuman to Continent-Level. In terms of Power Level, Luffy’s strongest opponents are around Supernatural Being to Champion.
In comparison, Kagome seems to face less powerful foes on the Power Hierarchy. In fact, she faces demons such as Naraku on a regular basis and is able to defeat spells, illusions and supernatural attacks.
Importantly, Naraku is capable of superhuman strength, speed, regeneration, magical spells, manipulation, transformation, spider webs, flight and energy blasts. Definitely, on the Power Hierarchy, he is at least Supernatural Being-Level with the full Jewel.
Overall, Luffy faces stronger opponents on his own or with other pirates than Kagome who fights against Naraku and other demons with the help of Inuyasha.

4. LIMITATIONS
Really, both heroes are astoundingly powerful and strong. Though Luffy is a Metahuman and is stronger with more transformations, we think Kagome with more control of her emotions can exploit Luffy’s weaknesses as a mystic.
With Gear 1, Luffy has more Super Strength and outclasses her in the Quality Opponent. At the same time, Kagome has the potential for infinite supernatural power as she can time-travel with the Bone-Eater’s Well.
Though Gear 5 shows Luffy may be a reality-warper with his imagination. Definitely, Luffy has None as Limitations while Kagome is limited by Power Dependency since she depends on the Jewel, the Bone-Eater’s Well and her Sacred Arrows.

Though Luffy is a Supernatural Being in the Power Hierarchy, Kagome has the potential for Infinite supernatural power. As a Mystic, Luffy faces better Quality Opponent and may be a reality-warper with his imagination.
Luffy wins.
