THE FIGHT

In DC Universe vs The Masters Of The Universe (2013) #2, Skeletor and Black Alice come to Prime Earth to drain it of its mystical life-force. Skeletor attacks the Justice League satellite and using magic turns them into his “minions.”

The Justice League “minions” attack John Constantine, Batman, He-Man, Teela and company at the Batcave.

A battle to the death ensues between Superman and He-Man.

What a battle! It turns out the Superman He-Man killed was actually a facsimile. The real Superman, was being imprisoned on the extra-dimensional world of Trolla, by Orko.

In DC Universe vs The Masters Of The Universe (2014) #6, He-Man rescues Superman from Trolla. An all-out battle between Orko’s minions and The Masters Of The Universe and the DC Universe ensues.

BEST: INJUSTICE VS MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (2019)

Collects Injustice vs Masters of The Universe #1-6.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Dialogue: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Plot: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Characterization: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Art: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.

In 2019, DC Comics published the latest addition to the Injustice: Gods Among Us franchise. With Injustice vs Masters of The Universe, the Injustice story is moved forward in a significant way.

Importantly, He-Man emerges as Superman’s contender for the title of DC’s most powerful hero.

As matter of fact, the end of the comic brings a satisfying conclusion to the series for Superman fans and a great portrayal for the He-Man and MoTU fanbase.

But that is not all. Soon, look forward to He-Man’s guest appearance in Injustice 3. Who wouldn’t love to have the power of Grayskull?

DIALOGUE

In many respects, Tim Seeley’s dialogue is true to the ancient style of speech. Indeed, it is verbose, long and cryptic. Particularly, this applies to Skeletor and Darkseid. For the most part, the dialogue serves to move the story forward.

Though it also serves as exposition and highlights the characters’ thought process. The large word balloons really fit a bigger size format ideal with the paperback.

PLOT

In sum, the plot is in fact a Hail Mary in order to save the DC Universe. When Injustice Superman seems to have extinguished hope on Earth, Batman contacts the only hero that may be able to defeat Superman in a slugfest: He-Man.

Also, the Injustice series is set on Earth Twenty-Two and is outside the DC mainstream continuity.

CHARACTERIZATION

Perhaps, the truest part of the entire series. For the most part, the characters figure as directly taken outside of a video game. Indeed, though complex, the contrast between good and evil is stark. Generally, such caricature may or may not appeal to fans.

Finally, one element that may seem out of character for the fallen hero, despite his evil, is Superman’s attempt to control the Anti-Life Equation.

ART

Finally, the series’ most appealing aspect. True to previous comics, Freddie E. Williams II complements work done on other He-Man comics, such as He-Man/Thundercats. For the most part, the art does service to the character who is its main protagonist.

In fact, He-Man works well in the comic medium as caricatural form of art.

VERDICT

With the new mini-series, the Injustice series breaks new ground. Really, the Superman vs He-Man rivalry started in the New 52 is completed here. Definitely, this storyline is one of the best Injustice stories.

RECOMMENDATION:

Definitely, collect either the trade paperback or the single issues.

BEST: ‘DC COMICS PRESENTS’ (1982) #47.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

‘DC Comics Presents’ was a series that featured Superman teaming-up with a different hero each issue. And oh boy, did they hit the ball in the park with this one! This issue is a kind of “What If” first team-up between Superman and He-Man.

We get our answers to what would happen if He-Man ever fought Superman. In their first encounter in DC history, Superman is brought from Earth to Eternia through a dimensional portal created by cosmic storm clouds. Skeletor is at one of his attacks at Castle Greyskull as he possesses half of the Power Sword! He-Man gets summoned by the Goddess and Superman travels to the strange world of Eternia.

This is a classic ’80s story with colors and pencils by Curt Swan. A more vintage art that favors bigger upper bodies and smaller legs. If you are a fan of the artist, this is classic Curt Swan. The fun, the action and the adventure belong in your ’80s He-Man collection.

This story is very reverent of both characters showing what makes each character work in the ’80s: He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Teela and the colorful cast of characters; the Superman/Clark Kent alter ego reminiscent of Christopher Reeve’s comedic tones. Both characters are true to themselves and form a formidable duo. Definitely a favorite story.

BEST: ‘MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE’ (1982).

Collects ‘Masters Of The Universe’ #1-3.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Paul Kupperberg and George Tuska’s three-issue series ‘Masters of The Universe’ may exemplify He-Man in the ’80s. At its best, He-Man deals with science fiction and fantasy themes comparable to Star Wars and Conan in the decade.

The world of ‘Masters of The Universe’ blends magic and science and figures the fantasy characters heading on a quest in order to save the Goddess. As matter of fact, ‘Masters of The Universe’ stands out because of the straight-forward natures of the quest. In some sense, what makes the comic work for the time period is the cartoony nature of the characters, which seem very well like one-dimensional characters: He-Man, Teela, Stratos and Man-At-Arms fight for good; whereas, Skeletor fights for Evil. The characters do not change.

The foci of the story are action and adventure. The adventure spans Eternia and the universe, from land, to sea, to space, to parallel dimensions. He-Man and co. fight snakes, dragons, demons, Beastmen, extra-dimensional creatures and even Skeletor. The action and the adventure are a thrill and are the parts that work the best in the comic. This is what He-Man is best at.

This is certainly a worthy addition to your He-Man and Masters of The Universe ’80s collection, with a blend of adventure, action, magic, and suspense.

GOOD: ‘HE-MAN AND THE POWER SWORD’ (1982).

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

“He-Man and The Power Sword” (1982) is the first of four Masters of The Universe miniature storybooks that accompanied the Mattel toyline. The storybook is clearly promotional material and serves as an introduction to He-Man and MoTU.

The storybook reads like a fairy tale. The water color art and the hyper-muscular lines of the characters creates the idea of legend and immortality. He-Man appears as a barbaric warrior who does not fear overwhelming foes and keeps fighting no matter the odds. The pacing is quick and focuses on the action, not the characterization. The plot is simple and straight-forward reminiscent of classic legends.

The storybook is aimed at children’s stories and works as a first introduction to the character.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND SCORES

This is the most significant DC crossover of the New 52. It re-introduced He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe to a new audience. It also helped fill in the story from the Masters Of The Universe and explained questions concerning some of its major characters and how they end up on Earth.

Certainly, this comic will help you get in touch with nature and the wilderness.

This product is well reviewed and has 60 ratings with an average customer review rating of 4.5 out of 5. There seems to be a great satisfaction with the product.

One customer review said: “One of the most burning questions I have with this series is why did ORKO betray the Masters? It is explained in this issue and reveals where He-Man’s mother the Queen is after Skeletor wiped their minds. So many answers in this collection that I thought was going to be a what if comic or alternate universe comic. I was wrong. This collection made me love the actual series just a little bit more!”

The reviews were overall very positive with only one negative review. Two problems cited by the negative review were the story-telling and art: “This story lacks depth, excitement and most importantly — passion. I think Keith Giffen and Dexter Soy were just collecting a paycheck and pushed this story out. Low energy ‘sketchy’ art and mediocre storytelling at best.”

Overall, this comic was great.

CONCLUSION

POSITIVE:

  • Availability in multiple formats: Paperback, Kindle, Comixology.
  • Affordable price.
  • Kindle Discount.
  • 1-Click
  • Great Customer Review Ratings.

NEGATIVE:

  • Due to the large file size, there may be slow downloads.
  • The book is only available in English.
  • The New and Used Paperbacks with Free delivery are expensive.

OUR PRODUCT REVIEW RATING:

We recommend this book as an earth-shattering re-introduction of Masters Of The Universe to the DC Universe.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
