DC Day: This Month, in the History of the DC Universe, the Flashes Outrace the Black Racer and the Omega Effect Killing Darkseid

DC DAY

Flashback FM

IN FRANCHISES, COMIC VALUES AND COLLECTIONS

In 1986, DC Comics published History of the DC Universe. Importantly, the comic changed continuity and introduced a single, unified DC Universe with a shared history. In addition, the DC multiverse was erased from continuity with the five remaining Earths after Crisis On Infinite Earths merging into New Earth. In the Pre-Crisis universe, DC Comics introduced Darkseid as a Superman villain.

This March, we remember the death of Darkseid in the iconic event Final Crisis #7. Today, we celebrate Final Crisis and major character deaths.

THE FLASHES AND BLACK RACER KILL DARKSEID

Perhaps, Final Crisis (2009) #7, is the most cryptic of the Morrison saga. Though the Supermen of the Multiverse save the DC multiverse, there are some loose ends that need resolution. Moreover, the comic is set in the Post-Crisis continuity though it anticipates the New 52. Importantly, the comic features the infamous death of Darkseid killed by Barry Allen, Wally West, the Omega Effect and the Black Racer. And after Boss Dark Side is shot by Batman’s radion bullet. Certainly, that is the reason how according to Comichron the comic performed with 109,400 unit sales in the year 2009.

DARKSEID KILLS BATMAN WITH THE OMEGA EFFECT

Certainly, the major death in the entire series. With a move that no one sees coming, DC Comics actually kills Batman. After Dick Grayson survived Infinite Crisis, it was time for a Bat-family member to die. Perhaps, the death is not a major news sensation though a very significant event in comicdom. In Final Crisis (2009) #6, the DC multiverse is at stake.

THE DEATH OF ORION IS FINAL CRISIS‘ MURDER MYSTERY

Importantly, Final Crisis is a murder mystery. Incredibly, Morrison weaves a threaded tapestry of gods, heroes and villains where the murder of Orion is the impetus for the conflict. Certainly, Final Crisis (2008) #1 is at number 9 on 2008 comic book sales to comic shops. In addition, in a death that angered fans, the Martian Manhunter also dies tragically.

THE MONITOR RACE IS ERASED

In Final Crisis (2009) #7, another major series of deaths occurs. With the passing of the multiverse, the Monitors are erased from existence. Perhaps, a warning that DC intended for Final Crisis to end the idea of a multiverse. SEE my ebook for more information.

In the Pre-Crisis universe, DC Comics introduced Hal Jordan as opposed to Alan Scott.

This January, the Green Lantern series hit a 100th-issue milestone with a double-sized comic featuring Hal Jordan published in 1978. Today, we celebrate Green Lantern.

GREEN LANTERN REACHES A MILESTONE

In Green Lantern (1978) #100, Green Lantern hits a milestone issue. In a double-sized comic by Dennis O’Neil and Alex Saviuk, Green Lantern has to stop a foreign terrorist named Master Tek. Moreover, the comic is set in the Pre-Crisis continuity on Earth-One. Also, the comic features the first appearance of Air Wave, Hal’s cousin. Importantly, the hero is one of the few characters that also share the name Hal Jordan like Green Lantern.

IN THE SECOND STORY, OLIVER QUEEN AGREES TO RUN FOR MAYOR

In “Beware the Blazing Inferno,” the second story, Oliver Queen agrees to run for mayor. In the issue, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Speedy (Roy Harper) stop the Blazing Infernos street gang in the latest Star City bombings. After, Mayor Jack Mayor deduces that Oliver Queen is Green Arrow and convinces him to run for mayor.

INZA NELSON TELLS THE ORIGIN OF DOCTOR FATE

In DC Special Series (1978) #10, Paul Levitz and Joe Staton revel the origin of superheroes. In three separate stories, we learn the origin stories of Doctor Fate, Lightray and Black Canary. Importantly, Fate’s wife, Inza Nelson reflects on her husband’s encounter with the Lord of Order, Nabu, on Earth-Two when he was 12 years old. In fact, Kent Nelson was destined to become Doctor Fate as Nabu took him under his apprenticeship.

Meanwhile, the Monitors unravel the causes that threaten the 52 universes of the multiverse lying in the multiversal anomalies. One of them, is Black Canary. Let’s reveal her origin story in the Post-Crisis continuity.

DIALOGUE

To sum, the dialogue highlights the different characters’ professions. Terry Moore’s word balloons focus on the subject that is the title: Is The Chaotic Code a hoax or a conspiracy? In fact, the dialogue progresses quickly moving the action forward.

For the most part, the story arc is filled with dialogue and some narration.

PLOT

Generally, The Chaotic Code has a generic plot though with some innovations. Since it is Birds of Prey, its protagonists are female characters. Even the final fight is between female characters and features a street fight.

At the same time, the story is comedic and truly enjoyable. In the comic, Barbara Gordon briefly regains the usage of her legs. However, the end of the story arc resets the status quo for the former Batgirl.

CHARACTERIZATION

Perhaps, the most enjoyable aspect of the comic. Really, Black Canary shines as the superheroine and the comic’s street fighter. Without a doubt, she is given the best lines and saves the day.

Equally, Barbara is revealed as capable and combat-competent despite her disability. Perhaps, the weak point, Talia Al Ghul is not given the time to shine.

ART

Incredibly, Amanda Conner does an impeccable work on the layouts. As matter of fact, the characters’ expressions are very different. In addition, Conner works to do the characters justice.

Indeed, the female characters are not over-sexualized nor put in risque poses. Though Dinah‘s dialogue and attire are with a lot of innuendos.

VERDICT

Finally, the comic highlights the best Birds of Prey elements. With action, adventure and sexual comedy, new readers have a good jumping on point. Definitely, this storyline is one of the most enjoyable Birds of Prey stories.

RECOMMENDATION:

Definitely, collect the story arc digitally in single issues format or volume 1 in paperback format.

In “Identity Crisis,” the JLA is faced with an ethical question. Indeed, the rape and the murder mystery of Sue Dibny drove deep wounds within the superhero community. Without a doubt, the Elongated Man’s wife was beloved. Regularly, she visited the Justice League atop the Watchtower.

Because of Sue Dibny’s rape, the Justice League faced a daunting ethical problem. In addition, Doctor Light was a threat to the League and their loved ones. In order to stop the psychopath, it was going to require drastic measures. But, the JLA members who responded to Sue’s signal and took down Doctor Light were split.

ZATANNA’S MINDWIPE THOUGH JUSTIFIED, WAS EXTREME

Divided, the JLA put the mindwipe to a vote. On one side, Green Lantern, Green Arrow and Black Canary voted against the mindwipe. On the other side, Zatanna, Hawkman and Atom voted for the mindwipe. Decisively, Flash (Barry Allen) broke the tie in favor. Without a doubt, a watershed moment in DC history that led to a breach of trust. When Zatanna lobotomized Doctor Light, Batman also arrived on the Watchtower. To prevent opposition from the Dark Knight, Zatanna also mindwiped him.

Later, during “Identity Crisis,” Batman recovered his memory of the event. Because of the breach of trust, this led to Batman creating Brother Eye to spy on the metahuman population. As Superboy-Prime argued, the heroes stopped behaving like heroes. The consequences were the Omac Project and the “Infinite Crisis.” In retaliation for Superman’s mind-control, Wonder Woman killed Maxwell Lord in cold blood.

AGAINST ZATANNA: THE JLA SHOULD HAVE INCAPACITATED DOCTOR LIGHT’S POWERS

Given its intrusive nature, mindwipe is highly traumatic. Definitely, the mindwiped may end up worse off morally and personality-wise. In Batman’s case, this may explain the dark path he set upon after recovering his memory of the incident. For Doctor Light, it set him on a path to revenge. To this end, to destroy the JLA and the Teen Titans.

Later, Doctor Light accepted membership into the Secret Society of Supervillains. Certainly, it was a darker DC Universe. For its part, the JLA should have followed Green Lantern’s advice. Instead, Zatanna should have incapacitated Doctor Light’s use of his super powers. Also, to protect Sue, Doctor Light should have been sent under solitary confinement at a maximum security prison.
