MY COMICS READING LIST

This is My Comics Reading List for New 52 SUPERMAN storylines. For anyone collecting the New 52, we are recommending the following comics as additions to their collections. You will love it!

Click on the Amazon product images below to purchase the comics.

1. SUPERMAN AND THE MEN OF STEEL (2012)

REVIEW

Definitely, the most popular storyline on Superman in the New 52. With his ‘Action Comics’ run, Grant Morrison returns Superman to his roots. Part social crusader and part alien savior, Superman conquers robots, the U.S. army and even alien invasions. Finally, our hero claims his heritage!

2. SUPERMAN UNCHAINED (2014)

REVIEW

Really, ‘Superman Unchained’ sports star-studded talent for the character’s 75th anniversary. With writer Scott Snyder and superstar Jim Lee, Superman soars into the skies. While Lee wonders us with panoramic panels, Scott Snyder reminds us what makes Superman a hero. In fact, this mini-series is the best Superman story of the New 52.

3. SUPERMAN: THE MEN OF TOMORROW (2015)

REVIEW

Comic-dom loves battles. When DC Comics introduces Ulysses, Superman finds another solar-powered rival. In addition, the Man of Steel unleashes a devastating new ability called the Super Flare!

VISIT SUPERMAN’S ROUND 1 BATTLE RANK

4. SUPERMAN: DOOMED (2015)

REVIEW

Definitely, ‘Superman: Doomed,’ is a fan-favorite in the New 52. And the story sets itself apart as a journey for Superman to truly learn about power and responsibility. Here, Greg Pak and Ed Benes have crafted a Superman story that challenged the status quo. Do not miss!

5. SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN: POWER COUPLE (2014)

REVIEW

Perhaps, the most controversial move of the DC reboot. Really, Charles Soule’s ongoing series is an experiment in comic mythos. While Superman’s and Wonder Woman‘s romance buds, their relationship sends quakes through the DC multiverse. For the Most Powerful Man on Earth, only the Most Powerful Woman can match him. It seems that way.

6. THE FINAL DAYS OF SUPERMAN (2016)

REVIEW

In many respects, Superman’s death may lack the cultural impact of ‘The Death of Superman.’ At the same time, it proved that the character was still beloved and an inspiration. Collect this comic for a new generation of readers.

Critically, Superman Unchained (2014) is the best Superman story of the New 52. Importantly, a secret about the U.S. Army and alien contact arises that threatens Earth. And a mysterious ally rises who questions Superman’s humanity.

Together, writer Scott Snyder and superstar artists Jim Lee and Dustin Nguyen collaborate on the story. Though grounded and deconstructionist, the writing shines on the menace of alien invasions. CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND SCORES

To begin, Superman Unchained questions the place of Superman in the world. Importantly, a new villain appears who questions Clark’s humanity. Dangerously, the U.S. Army and a mysterious alien army threaten Earth. And Superman must choose between Earth and his Kryptonian heritage.

The comic is excellent for your collection. You will definitely love Jim Lee’s realistic pencils, the characters’ muscular physiques and the color palette. This is the comic to own in order to build your New 52 collection.

This product has 268 global ratings with a customer review rating of 4.8 out of 5.

The customer review said: “An exiting action packed adventure. the art is excellent, from one of today’s top artist in the media. the story is OK. Well written. Very enjoyable.

My favorite parts where Superman’s inner dialogues, They make him brave and really smart. Shows it takes more than super-powers to be super-hero. Also Batman and Superman NOT being rivals and actually trusting each other. And Clark acting like a reporter and not just being a cover up for the world’s greatest hero.

What I dislike was having the army considering Superman a threat…Again. Its been so overused lately (Superman:Birthright, Superman: Earth One, Superman: Secret Origin, the Man of Steel movie, etc).”

There are two negative reviews. One negative review pointed Superman not acting in character: “Superman was acting like batman did not really felt the story it was meh.”

Overall, this comic was great.

CONCLUSION

POSITIVE:

  • Hardcover format available.
  • Kindle and Comixology formats available.
  • Great writing.
  • Great art.

NEGATIVE:

  • Repetitive superhero tropes.

BEST DC COMICS ARTISTS

To begin, the art is epic DC art. The artist on the series is Dexter Soy. In 2012, the artist rose to prominence for his fan art on Thor. After, he landed the Captain Marvel storyline in the seventh vvolume. Importantly, his work on the high-profile crossover DC Universe vs Masters of the Universe (2014) is his best work. In his masterpiece, the artist’s pencils have the fantasy atmosphere of Masters of the Universe with the seriousness of the DC Universe.

Certainly, with no coloring credit the computer-generated hue of the comic adds to the fantasy and epic. In addition, Dexter Soy’s inking is a highlight in this issue. Though Soy’s pencils create a surreal and almost video-game feel, his characters have distinctiveness and show the atmosphere of magic. Importantly, the comic excels at action and the page on the left shows the artist’s masterpiece!

THE FIGHT

In DC Universe vs The Masters Of The Universe (2013) #2, Skeletor and Black Alice come to Prime Earth to drain it of its mystical life-force. Skeletor attacks the Justice League satellite and using magic turns them into his “minions.”

The Justice League “minions” attack John Constantine, Batman, He-Man, Teela and company at the Batcave.

A battle to the death ensues between Superman and He-Man.

What a battle! It turns out the Superman He-Man killed was actually a facsimile. The real Superman, was being imprisoned on the extra-dimensional world of Trolla, by Orko.

In DC Universe vs The Masters Of The Universe (2014) #6, He-Man rescues Superman from Trolla. An all-out battle between Orko’s minions and The Masters Of The Universe and the DC Universe ensues.

Federal forces are sent to capture Cyborg and his technology-but things take a bizarre twist when tensions rise among members of the Justice League, who are split over what Cyborg should do.

Shazam doesn’t understand why Cyborg won’t go along with the federal agents. Could this be the moment that ends their friendship?

Critically, ‘Cyborg’ (1991) #9, is one of the best Cyborg stories. With the passage of the Federal Cybernetic Regulation Act, the federal government intends to confiscate Cyborg and his alien technology. However, tensions rise between Shazam and Cyborg when the latter opposes the decision.

Together, writer David F. Walker and a team of artists collaborate on the story. Though optimistic, the writing shines on the relationships among the different characters. Nevertheless, the art in the book is characteristic of the New 52: big, bold, fun. Moreover, Shazam vs Cyborg!

In 2019, DC Comics published the latest addition to the Injustice: Gods Among Us franchise. With Injustice vs Masters of The Universe, the Injustice story is moved forward in a significant way.

Importantly, He-Man emerges as SUPERMAN’s contender for the title of DC’s most powerful hero.

As matter of fact, the end of the comic brings a satisfying conclusion to the series for Superman fans and a great portrayal for the He-Man and MoTU fanbase.

But that is not all. Soon, look forward to He-Man’s guest appearance in Injustice 3. Who wouldn’t love to have the power of Grayskull?

DIALOGUE

In many respects, Tim Seeley’s dialogue is true to the ancient style of speech. Indeed, it is verbose, long and cryptic. Particularly, this applies to Skeletor and Darkseid. For the most part, the dialogue serves to move the story forward.

Though it also serves as exposition and highlights the characters’ thought process. The large word balloons really fit a bigger size format ideal with the paperback.

PLOT

In sum, the plot is in fact a Hail Mary in order to save the DC Universe. When Injustice Superman seems to have extinguished hope on Earth, BATMAN contacts the only hero that may be able to defeat Superman in a slugfest: He-Man.

Also, the Injustice series is set on Earth Twenty-Two and is outside the DC mainstream continuity.

CHARACTERIZATION

Perhaps, the truest part of the entire series. For the most part, the characters figure as directly taken outside of a video game. Indeed, though complex, the contrast between good and evil is stark. Generally, such caricature may or may not appeal to fans.

Finally, one element that may seem out of character for the fallen hero, despite his evil, is Superman’s attempt to control the Anti-Life Equation.

ART

Finally, the series’ most appealing aspect. True to previous comics, Freddie E. Williams II complements work done on other He-Man comics, such as He-Man/Thundercats. For the most part, the art does service to the character who is its main protagonist.

In fact, He-Man works well in the comic medium as caricatural form of art.

VERDICT

With the new mini-series, the Injustice series breaks new ground. Really, the Superman vs He-Man rivalry started in the New 52 is completed here. Definitely, this storyline is one of the best Injustice stories.

RECOMMENDATION:

Definitely, collect either the trade paperback or the single issues.

IN POWER LEVEL

IN DC COMICS, HE-MAN CONTENDS FOR THE MOST POWERFUL HERO

He-Man. DC Comics.

Incredibly, He-Man remains today one of the most popular heroes in comicdom. In fact, unit sales of Masters of The Universe Revelation ranked 31st in July 2021. Recently, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe have gained a revival with the Netflix TV series adaptation.

Since the Masters of the Universe re-joined the New 52 and the DC Universe in 2013 with DC Universe vs Masters of the Universe, He-Man has enjoyed a growing popularity.

In 2019, He-Man and MOTU revitalized the Injustice: Gods Among Us franchise with Injustice vs Masters of The Universe. According to rumor, He-Man, Anti-Monitor and John Constantine may appear in Injustice 3.

Recently, in the Injustice crossover, He-Man has challenged SUPERMAN as DC’s most powerful hero. Let’s see why this may actually be the case. First, let’s rank He-Man’s formidability since the New 52.

FORMIDABILITY

Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy.

For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Level. For example, this explains why BATMAN is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful.

Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.

Before we rank He-Man, let’s list some rules.

  1. First, the superhero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
  2. In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
  3. Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
  4. Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.

Let’s rank our DC hero. To note, the score is rated out of a 100.

FORMIDABILITY:

COSMIC

Generally, He-Man is THE best warrior in the DC multiverse. In fact, the most powerful fighter in DC. What makes He-Man so powerful is because he has access to limitless power from Castle Grayskull.

Though not in the mainstream universe, let’s list why He-Man may eventually dethrone Superman as DC’s most powerful hero.

3. HIS STRENGTH CLASS IS LIMITLESS

Early in the 1980s animated series, He-Man was described as the most powerful man in the universe. In reality, the source of his power is the Sword of Power. Often with the battle cry “I got the power!,” Prince Adam would transform into He-Man using the Sword of Power.

Really, with the Sword of Power, He-Man has access to Limitless power. In fact, the He-Man/Thundercats crossover revealed that the Sword of Power joined to the Orb has Infinite power.

With the sacred artifacts, the DC hero can travel between realities in the DC multiverse, re-create the DC multiverse and warp reality.

2. CASTLE GRAYSKULL IS THE NEXUS OF THE DC MULTIVERSE

In Injustice vs Masters of the Universe #6, Superman attempts to re-create the DC multiverse as its new absolute tyrant. In the issue, we learn that Castle Grayskull is the Nexus of All Realities.

Importantly, He-Man draws his power from Castle Grayskull as its conduit. Thus, He-Man is potentially a Multiversal conduit with Infinite potential.

Indeed, with the power, Superman attempts to find the perfect Earth in the multiverse where he can prevent his family’s death and be reunited with them. However, trying his best, Superman cannot locate his perfect Earth.

When Superman attempts to kill Prince Adam and become the new conduit to begin his new rule, the Eternian receives a power boost. In one powerful lightning bolt from Castle Grayskull, He-Man blasts Superman to death. Then, the Black Racer arrives and claims Superman’s soul.

1. POWERFUL ENEMIES

Perhaps, the most underrated aspect of the MOTU franchise. Generally, He-Man’s enemies directly threaten the universe or the DC multiverse. In He-Man/Thundercats, Skeletor and Mumm-Ra unite in order to become Mumm-Ator. Together, they threaten the DC multiverse.

In the end, He-Man is the true guardian of the DC multiverse protecting it from threats from multiple sources.

And that’s our ranking! Don’t forget to leave comments if you liked the Super Power.

From 2013 to 2016, Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino had some of the best runs on Green Arrow in recent memory. Namely, the story arc is simply titled Green Arrow that acts as a soft reboot. Critically, it is one of the best runs of the New 52.

In a sense, it is similar to a BATMAN: Year One story. In fact, it is a back-to-basics run about Green Arrow‘s origin story including the loss of his fortune and his time stranded on Starfish Island. Thematically, it is about loss, responsibility and overcoming extreme pain.

Really, critics and die-hard fans of Green Arrow have raved about this run. At Comic Book Movie, Bradley M. Walker Sr. lauds the series as a successful jumping on point for new and old fans alike.

Furthermore, the work by the tandem Lemire-Sorrentino is revolutionary. In fact, Sorrentino’s artistic experiment lends itself well to a digital format.

Certainly, the Green Arrow vs Count Vertigo battle is a highlight of the run. Without a doubt, it reveals the brutality and the savagery of Oliver’s training and skills. Definitely, it is not for the faint of heart.

Definitely, this story is one of the best Green Arrow stories ever told. Successfully, the comic gains new fans onboard with its back-to-basics approach and its origin story. In fact, it is available on Amazon in the link below.

Wonder Woman may become a classic collection in the future. Namely, it is the fourth volume in the Wonder Woman series that lasted the entirety of the New 52. And that is saying the work is top-notch.

At the helm, is a creative team that had a long-lasting impact on the character and the DC Universe.

As matter of fact, the changes that Azzarello and his team brought to the series impacted Wonder Woman well into Rebirth. It may be said that when Wonder Woman became the God of War, she slowly became the central character in the DC Universe.

Indeed, this is evident in Justice League: Darkseid War which clotures the New 52 and in Dark Nights: Death Metal which gives a fresh beginning to the DC multiverse.

For new readers, Wonder Woman presents a stark contrast in its colorful cast of characters. Though the confrontation between the heroine and First Born is complex, it is amplified by caricature.

In effect, both characters by their physical appearance and their morality stand diametrically opposed. It is this caricature that is evident in the Olympians who have abandoned mythological attire for a more modern outlook.

This colorful cast of characters with its machinations seems to weave a tapestry that ultimately seeks power and domination.

When Wonder Woman has to protect a new life, a new dimension of maternity is added to her personality. In the end, she saves the day by making a difficult choice in battle. And the new love interest with Orion is an added breath of fresh air.

Really, this may be some of the best Wonder Woman writing in years.

Definitely, this volume is essential Wonder Woman and the caricatures flow perfectly on the Kindle format.

BEST: BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Dialogue: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Plot: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Characterization: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Art: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.

At DC Comics, Batman is the established most popular character. Really, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s run is the stuff of legend! As matter of fact, Batman takes his war on crime against the Court of Owls, an organization that controls all of Gotham City.

Without a doubt, this is the decisive Batman run of the New 52. What makes it stand out is the organization’s mythical status and its apparent connection to the Wayne family. In fact, there is an ominous prophecy of Bruce Wayne’s timely death after a murder.

Importantly, a Publisher’s Weekly review, comments Capullo’s art is pulp fiction. Correctly, the run features some of the best noir and pulp art from the New 52. In fact, Capullo excels at exaggeration and grotesqueness.

Without a doubt, the art enhances the surrealism of the different story arcs. Perfectly, the complexity of the story and the surrealist art have great visual effects on Kindle & Comixology.

To sum, the Batman series was elevated to a higher note in the New 52. In many respects, it is the Detective element that has been highlighted more even during DC Universe Rebirth. As we have put it, Batman is either a #Batgod or a #Batninja. For your part, take your pick.

Definitely, this graphic novel belongs in your digital collection. Certainly, this is one of the most serious treatments of the New 52.

Technically, DC Universe vs Masters of the Universe is a limited series. However, its popularity, fan service and characterization make it a strong contender for the best New 52 story arc.

And including, the mega-popular Superman vs He-Man battle that overjoyed fans of the DC Universe and The Masters of The Universe.

Really, the crossover EVENT captured a moment of glory and excitement for the New 52 reboot. Indeed, were He-Man and company going to shake the DC Universe status quo?

For some reason, it would have made sense for He-Man to dethrone Superman as the most powerful DC hero.
