When Justice League (2013) #7 was released, it was received with mixed reviews. As a critically-acclaimed writer, Geoff Johns has revitalized DC Comics properties and their fanbases. According to CBR., his Shazam back-up stories in Justice League have given us the greatest Shazam stories of all-time.

To begin, Billy Batson is a runaway and difficult orphan who moves from foster home to foster home. Story-wise, Shazam Vol. 1 centers on Billy’s relationship with his new family, the Vasquezes, and the Wizard’s quest for a new champion. Namely, the conflict is over Doctor Sivana’s attempt to prove magic is real. Gloriously, though Billy is troubled, he is also good-natured and seeks to protect his new family.

In a sense, Shazam Vol . 1 is Johns’ commentary on the resurging children stories and coming out of childhood. Certainly, the commentary is about children’s and adults’ own fears given form under the Seven Deadly Sins.. In fact, these sins are reflected together under a giant demonic beast. And we’ve seen Zachary Levi rumble with the beasts in Shazam! (2019)!

Definitely, this story is quintessential Shazam and belongs in your Shazam collection.

GOOD: TRINITY WAR (2013)

Collects Justice League #19-20, Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1, Justice League #22, Justice League of America #6, Justice League Dark #22, Justice League of America #7, Justice League Dark #23, Justice League #23, Trinity of Sin: Pandora #2-3, Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #1, Constantine #5.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Dialogue: 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Plot: 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Characterization: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Art: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.

In 2013, DC Films co-founder Geoff Johns, superstar writer Jeff Lemire and artist Ivan Reis collaborated on Trinity War. Though, the event was promoted as some of the best New 52 stories, it received mixed to positive reviews.

At the beginning, we learn of Pandora’s Curse during Ancient Times to carry the Box that unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins. Later, in modern-day times, the protagonist unleashes the Trinity War when the Justice League, the JLA and the Justice League Dark attempt to open it.

In some sense, the series showed an interesting premise that attempted to solve the mystery of magic and the Seven Deadly Sins. For its part, Ivan Reis’ art is the highlight of the crossover. To this end, the characters are penciled with expressiveness, particularly Shazam who shows excitement when he punches Superman! In fact, Reis’ art excels at both the supernatural and action.

Definitely, this graphic novel is important for your Shazam/Captain Marvel collection though the hero plays a less central role. Indeed, fans of Geoff Johns love the emphasis on magic and the inter-connected revelation of the multiverse.

WORST: JUSTICE LEAGUE: SURVIVORS OF EVIL (2013)

Collects Justice League of America #8-14.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.

Dialogue: 1.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Plot: 1.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Characterization: 1.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Art: 2.5 out of 5.0 stars.

In many respects, Survivors of Evil (2013) is an in-between storyline. Certainly, it provides an important explanation on the JL whereabouts during Forever Evil. At the same time, the exposition is ambiguous and new readers have a hard time following the Justice League’s prisons.

To sum, the Crime Syndicate has taken over Prime Earth and imprisoned the Justice League in illusions in the forms of prison. Very few important developments for Shazam who gets in a brief scuffle against Martian Manhunter.

On this list, this series is one of the worst JL storylines.
