For our very first Anime/Manga article, we compared Goku and One-Punch Man. For dedicated fans, who have been following the media, manga and anime produce some of the most gravity-defying and exhilarating fights in all fandom.
In today’s article, we compare two fighters that are the cream of the crop in terms of fighting spirit, determination, strength and yes… techniques!
Though both universes have never met, what would happen in a battle between the strongest Street Fighter, Ryu and the strongest Bronze Saint, Saint Seiya?
Really, both are A-list heroes in their respective universes. Namely, the iconic Ryu recently appeared in the Street Fighter VI (2022) video game. For his part, the naive Saint Seiya has started his journey in Knights of the Zodiac (2023).
Though both heroes have shown devastating attacks, let’s compare their strength in terms of fighting villains. Hence, we compare Dark Hado Ryu vs Bronze Cloth Saint Seiya.
KI AND POWER LEVELS
Generally, the concept of power levels understood scientifically or physically is not useful in anime and manga. In fact, this is due to the concept of ki.
In anime and manga, characters’ strengths are not dependent on how much physical strength they can exert, or how much they can lift. Instead, they depend on their ability to use their natural life force for devastating attacks, super speed or abilities such as flying.
In many respects, these are an application of martial arts and Chinese philosophies to the arts of fighting and war. For these reasons, we compare these warriors in terms of formidability.
FORMIDABILITY
Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy.
For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Level. For example, this explains why Batman is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful.
Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.
Before we rank our two heroes, let’s list some rules.
- First, the hero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
- In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
- Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
- Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.
First, we will compare them in Class, Weaknesses, Quality Opponents and Limitations. Then, let’s rank Dark Hado Ryu and Bronze Cloth Saint Seiya in Formidability. To note, all scores are rated out of a 100.

1. STRENGTH CLASS
Generally, Saint Seiya is among the strongest of the knights of the zodiac. On many occasions, he has pushed through his limits to overcome more powerful opponents. Importantly, the saints use a power called Cosmo which can unleash devastating attacks.
At the same time, it seems their power can be measured directly in terms of their speed or kinetic energy. Certainly, Silver Saints are five times more powerful than Bronze Saints and can unleash attacks at MACH 5. So, we can assume the Bronze Saints can reach supersonic speeds with their attacks.
At MACH 1, Seiya’s 53-kilogram body can unleash 6235397 Joules of kinetic energy for a Building-Level of Energy Projection. For more information on our Power Level Scale, visit the Power Level Wiki.
On the other hand, Ryu rates as less strong though he has as much potential. In most of his fights, Ryu appears as a fighter with potential who must train to control his devastating power. In fact, his strength level is so great that he has to journey Earth to find worthy opponents.
However, in Street Fighter: Alpha Generations, we see Ryu’s Dark Hado unleashed. Initially, Ryu is at a disadvantage against Akuma. But when Akuma taunts the hero to unleash his power and surrender, the fighter progressively succumbs to the Satsui no Hado.
And when both fighters unleash their devastating fireballs, it is the entire forest that is on fire. With a near square kilometer of destruction, Ryu’s strength is definitely at least Building to Street-Level.
ADVANTAGE: RYU
2. WEAKNESSES
For the most part, Ryu’s main weakness has been his inner darkness and loneliness. In his battles, he has often gotten the upper-hand on his opponents, or lost because of his fear to lose control to the Satsui no Hado. Nonetheless, Ryu remains the strongest of the Street Fighters.
Indeed, he has mastered multiple techniques over the years such as Hadoken, Shoryuken, Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, Shakunetsu Hadoken. Really, Ryu is a master martial artist with few weaknesses in combat.
Generally, Saint Seiya fights with greco-roman boxing and kenpo fighting styles. Though his main weakness is his naivete and his lack of seriouness in fights which could prove his undoing. In a fight with the Street Fighter, it could cause some problems though Seiya seems to be a true hero.
With fewer mastered techniques such as the Pegasus Meteor Fist, Saint Seiya outlasts his opponents because he refuses to give up and always stands up with the help of Shiryu, Hyoga and Shun.
Overall, both fighters seem about even in terms of Weaknesses though they overcome their Hubris with discipline and friendship.
ADVANTAGE: TIE

3. QUALITY OPPONENTS
Perhaps, the most clear area to consider. Ryu’s most dangerous foes tend to be either mad martial artists like Akuma or criminal masterminds like Bison. At the same time, Ryu has not died in his battles.
Though their physical strength is often around Peak Human, their Power Level or ki tends to be around Metahuman to City Block-Level. In terms of Power Level, Ryu’s strongest opponents are around Assassin or Team Wrecker.
In comparison, Saint Seiya Man seems to have adopted a more Western or perhaps empirical approach. During his battle with Saga, Saint Seiya awakens his Cosmo with Athena’s help and merges it with his teaammates. With their power, he manages to throw lightspeed punches at the Gold Saint to defeat him.
Traveling at the speed of light, this means his powerup has Infinite-Level of Energy Projection. Certainly, the Gold Saints have Infinite-Level power with a Cosmic Being-Level in terms of Quality Opponents
Overall, Saint Seiya needs a powerup to fight higher Quality Opponents at the Cosmic Being-Level.
ADVANTAGE: SAINT SEIYA
4. LIMITATIONS
Really, both heroes are astoundingly powerful and strong. Though Ryu seems to have unlimited potential, Saint Seiya has shown infinite power in his powerups as a Silver Saint.
Though a Bronze Cloth Seiya fighting without his teammates would have a harder time reaching his Cosmo in time to defeat the better trained and smarter Ryu.
