3. SAY MY NAME

Warner Bros. Entertainment

In his interview with Collider in 2019, director David Sandberg revealed that Shazam! is inspired from the ground-breaking Geoff Johns New 52 run on Justice League (2013) that covered Billy Batson’s origin story. Importantly, it features the Wizard Shazam, Doctor Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins. The storyline is collected in Shazam! Vol. 1.

Like the comic, Billy Batson gains the powers of the Wizard and transforms into Shazam when he says the latter magic name. In one of the best scenes of the movie, Billy travels to the Rock of Eternity when he boards the subway after escaping bullies at school.

2. I’M BULLETPROOF

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Though Shazam! is about fantasy and children coming of age, it does deal with important themes of alienation, crime and social identity. When Billy becomes Shazam the first time, he contacts Freddy, his disabled foster brother, for superhero mentoring.

Importantly, in one of the most comedic scenes of the movie, Shazam begins his superhero career in a convenience store where he stops a robbery. In fact, the hero finds out with elation and enthusiasm that he is bulletproof. In the interview, director Sandberg reveals that the tone of the movie is different from other DC Extended Universe films.

ADVERTISE COMICS

1. SHAZAM!

Dead X Spider

Cinematically, David Sandberg is a horror filmmaker who excels at action and fantasy cinema. In fact, his movies are often low-budget productions that reveal his filmmaking mastery.

Importantly, the movie features one of the most memorable shots to open the third act. When his family is kidnapped by Doctor Sivana, Billy springs into action by saying Shazam when he jumps off a rooftop. In the interview, Sandberg revealed he altered the Seven Deadly Sins with a more monster-like appearance, betraying his horror style.
