NEW 52 WONDER WOMAN STORYLINES RANKED FROM BEST TO WORST

When Wonder Woman was relaunched in the New 52, it was received with poor reviews. As a critically-acclaimed writer, Brian Azzarello has produced controversial DC Comics storylines. According to CBR., his Wonder Woman run highlighted some of the continuity issues of the New 52.

To begin, Diana Prince is the daughter of Zeus and Queen Hippolyta. Story-wise, Wonder Woman: Iron centers on the Olympian gods and the Prophecy of a child who would end his reign. Namely, the conflict is over Diana’s decision for Olympus or protect a newborn. Gloriously, though Diana is troubled, her bravery and naivete lead her to protect her family.

In a sense, Azzarello’s is a modern and more accurate re-telling of the Olympian gods and Wonder Woman. Certainly, the commentary is about DC comics finally embracing the horror and supernatural elements in Greek myth. Though, changes in continuity and Wonder Woman’s personality confused fans since DC attempted to modernize its characters.

Definitely, this story is quintessential Wonder Woman and belongs in your New 52 collection. You can also collect the entire run of Wonder Woman Omnibus.

GOOD: WONDER WOMAN: THE SECRET OF THE CHEETAH (2013)

Collects Justice League #7-12.

Plot: 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Characterization: 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Art: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.

In 2013, former DC Films co-founder Geoff Johns and artist Ivan Reis collaborated on Justice League: The Secret of the Cheetah. Perhaps, one of the best storylines of the New 52, the collected graphic novel in Throne of Atlantis (2013) was a New York Times Bestseller.

Five years after Justice League: Origin (2012), the Justice League must deal with popular opinion. After Martian Manhunter‘s betrayal, the League is aloof and not taking any new members. Despite Trevor’s publicity, their enemies are growing.

In some sense, the storyline showed an interesting take on the god-like heroes and their failures to save villains. For its part, Jim Lee’s art is the highlight of the crossover. To this end, the characters are penciled with expressiveness, particularly Wonder Woman who struggles to save Cheetah from a curse! In fact, Lee’ art excels at both the scenery and action.

Definitely, this graphic novel is important for your Wonder Woman collection and the heroine plays a central role. Indeed, fans of Geoff Johns love the emphasis on magic and the inter-connected revelation of the multiverse.

WORST: SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN: POWER COUPLE (2013)

Collects Superman/Wonder Woman: Power Couple #1-6.

Dialogue: 0.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Plot: 1.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Characterization: 0.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Art: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.

In many respects, Superman/Wonder Woman: Power Couple (2013) is a popular New 52 storyline. Certainly, it changes the status quo and introduces the fans to a budding decades long romance. At the same time, the dialogue is cryptic and new readers have a hard time understanding the characters.

To sum, after their time in the Justice League, Superman and Wonder Woman grow closer. In some sense, though their relationship is intimate, it is dysfunctional. Though DC Comics paid fan service the Power Couple angered fans for the lack of history and chemistry. Importantly, the new series was aimed at younger readers though it alienated long-time fans.

On this list, this series is one of the worst Wonder Woman storylines.
