AT HER PEAK, SHADOWCAT CAN PHASE AN INTER-PLANETARY BULLET THROUGH EARTH

In 'Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men' (2008) #1, Shadowcat phases a 10-mile bullet through Earth.
In Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men (2008) #1, Shadowcat phases a 10-mile bullet through Earth. Marvel Comics.

To begin, Shadowcat has often been the most disrespected member of the X-Men. Indeed, her mutant super power allows her to phase through solid objects. Nonetheless, her bashfulness, youth and fear have often caused her some issues. But all that changed.

In one remarkable story, Kitty Pryde is called upon to save the Earth from impending doom. Particularly, the X-Men are on a mission to Breakworld to prevent the destruction of Earth. On Breakworld, the planet is governed according to prophecies viewed on “timeshadows.”1

Violently, the planet had been at constant war. In order to investigate the prophecy of a mutant that would cause the end of Breakworld, the X-Men travel there. As it turns out, the prophecy referred to Colossus.

When Powerlord Kruun activated Retaliator from their orbiting moon, the 10-mile bullet was fired on a collision course with Earth-616. Immediately, Shadowcat phased through the bullet attempting to alter its navigation systems.

However, with no navigation systems inside, Kitty was forced to use her mutant powers. Meanwhile, the X-Men and Earth’s heroes banded together to avert the cataclysm. However, the bullet’s magic was too powerful providing them with fantasies about victories.

Finally, summoning all her might, Shadowcat phased the bullet all the way through Earth. In the end, she seemed permanently merged with the bullet in space where she stayed for a duration of two years.

Really, when we rate this feat, Kitty’s energy projection required her to phase a 10-mile bullet traveling at stellar speed.

In fact, in the comic, we get the information that the bullet had a gravitational slingshot around Desirius-Beta, which is 8.6 light years or 8.136*1016 meters away from Earth.

At eight minutes from a collision with Earth, the bullet was traveling Faster-Than-Light at 1.695*1014 m/s. Overall, the kinetic energy of the bullet was at least 2.87*1028 Joules. In order words, Shadowcat had to perform a Stellar-Level of Energy Projection.

Now, let’s answer the user’s question by looking at how Kitty’s powers work when phased.

A GHOST, KITTY WOULD NOT NEED TO EAT NOR BREATHE WHEN PHASED

3. SHADOWCAT CAN AIR WALK

In 'Kitty Pryde and Wolverine' (1985) #5, Kitty Pryde has to concentrate to walk on air.
In Kitty Pryde and Wolverine (1985) #5, Kitty Pryde has to concentrate to walk on air. Marvel Comics.

In Kitty Pryde and Wolverine (1985) #5, Kitty Pryde becomes Shadowcat for the first time. To this end, she travels to Tokyo in order to warn Heiji Shigematsu to stop threatening her father.

During the issue, Kitty displays her famous ability to walk on air. Though the physics of this super power are unclear, basically, Kitty is able to become less dense than air. At the same time, she phases all her atoms through the air molecules.

Really, she would have to phase her 7 octillion or 7*1027 atoms to become less denser than 1.225 kg/m3. In each cubic meter of air, she would have to phase at least 2.53 x 10^25 atoms. For 4.74 m3, that’s less than 5.81 kg.

Theoretically, being less dense than air would enable to not need to breathe. However, it should be noted that it is a mental or psionic process in the case of Kitty that requires concentration.

2. SHADOWCAT CAN DISRUPT CIRCUITRY AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

In 'Uncanny X-Men' (1999) #367, Kitty Pryde disrupts the Acolytes' Gravimetric Pulse Ship.
In Uncanny X-Men (1999) #367, Kitty Pryde disrupts the Acolytes’ Gravimetric Pulse Ship. Marvel Comics.

In many respects, an indication of Kitty’s phasing powers, is her ability to disrupt circuitry and electrical systems. In Uncanny X-Men (1999) #367, Kitty Pryde and the X-Men are fighting the Magneto War.

Namely, Magneto with his Acolytes have unleashed an EMP over the Earth. To this end, he demands that the UN cede land for a mutant sanctuary. Against Magneto are the X-Men. During the battle, Shadowcat disrupts the Acolytes’ Gravimetric Pulse ship’s electrical systems.

In some sense, Shadowcat’s psionic powers are purely physical. It appears phasing her atoms between the atoms of solid objects, allows her to disrupt the force of electromagnetism.

Likely, she affects the directional movement of electrically charged particles – these include protons and electrons – necessary to create a current.

In some respects, Shadowcat affects matter at the atomic level by disrupting electromagnetic and electrical forces. This seems to indicate that in a phased state, her mind and body supply electrical energy.

And the average human produces 100 watts at rest, which is less than 10 percent of the 1250 W that a house consumes every hour. Definitely, this is a Peak Human-Level feat.

1. IN THE PERMANENT PHASED STATE, SHADOWCAT DOES NOT NEED TO EAT

After the Breakworld bullet, Kitty Pryde remained in space for an extended period of time. Furthermore, she stayed without need for food.

In theory, the ability to phase through solid objects and to walk on air, would preclude the need for air and food. Indeed, in a phased state, Kitty’s body is either fully or partially intangible.

At the same time, the loss of the need for air means there would be no biochemistry involved, since oxygen is needed to carry out the living reactions of the body. As such, Shadowcat would not need food. In effect, in her phased state she is a ghost.

ANSWER:

In her phased state, Shadowcat is a ghost and without the need for air, precludes the need for the biochemistry of life. Therefore, she would not need food.

Feat: Silver Surfer, ‘Silver Surfer’ #4

IN SUPERHERO BATTLES

SILVER SURFER (NORRIN RADD)
EARTH-616

In ‘Silver Surfer’ (1969) #4, titled “The Good, The Bad And The Uncanny!”, Silver Surfer performs an energy projection feat. Loki has mischievously brought Silver Surfer to kill Thor. Silver Surfer challenges Thor, though unbeknownst to him, Loki has added to his power. During the battle, Silver Surfer’s Power Cosmic encases Mjolnir in a cosmic field preventing Thor from reaching the Uru hammer.

How much energy projection does it take for Silver Surfer to encase Mjolnir in a cosmic field, preventing Thor from reaching the Uru hammer?

Silver Surfer used the Power Cosmic to encase Mjolnir in a cosmic field to prevent Thor from reaching the Uru hammer. With Loki’s power augmenting his Power Cosmic, Silver Surfer prevented the enchantment on Thor’s hammer such that Mjolnir would not reach Thor.

SILVER SURFER BROKE THE WORTHINESS ENCHANTMENT ON MJOLNIR REDUCING THOR TO HALF POWER, THE EQUIVALENT OF HALF OF THE UNIVERSE’S ZERO SUM ENERGY, WITH 4.0296675*10^62 JOULES OF KINETIC ENERGY.

Silver Surfer has been brought to Asgard by Loki’s mischief. His mission is to kill Thor in order to stop a purported war. Silver Surfer challenges Thor to a duel. During the battle, Silver Surfer uses the Power Cosmic to encase Mjolnir in a cosmic field to prevent Thor from reaching the Uru hammer. With Loki’s power augmenting his Power Cosmic, Silver Surfer prevented the enchantment on Thor’s hammer such that Mjolnir would not reach Thor.

We will use the mystical enchantment on Mjolnir in order to calculate the Silver Surfer’s energy projection.

THOR’S MJOLNIR

In ‘Journey Into Mystery’ (1964) #101, Thor has fallen in love with mortal Jane Foster. As he prepares to go to Asgard to plead his case to marry Jane, Loki projects a vision of Thor to Odin showing his plans. Odin decreases the worthiness enchantment on Mjolnir by half and bans Thor from Asgard until he renounces his love.

In ‘Journey Into Mystery’ (1964) #101, Odin decreases the worthiness enchantment on Mjolnir by half and bans Thor from Asgard until he renounces his love. AP Photo/Marvel Comics.

Mjolnir increases Thor’s power by half. Let’s estimate Thor’s energy projection from his highest power output which is the God Blast.

First, let’s estimate Galactus’ durability. In ‘Fantastic Four (1966) #50, Mister Fantastic retrieves the Ultimate Nullifier with the Human Torch’s help in order to stop Galactus from consuming the Earth. Mister Fantastic threatens Galactus with the Ultimate Nullifier who states Mister Fantastic has “the means to destroy a galaxy… to lay waste to a universe!!”1

The statement indicates Galactus is Universal Level in Durability. In ‘Thor’ (1969) #161, Thor unleashes the God Blast on Galactus in order to stop the fight between Galactus and Ego the Living Planet.

Since Thor’s God Blast put Galactus near death, it is at least Universal Level in Energy Projection.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

The worthiness enchantment on Mjolnir gives Thor half of his divine power. The worthiness enchantment has been broken by Thor, the Red Norvell, Beta Ray Bill, and Captain America. They all have in common that they embrace the warrior code. Thor’s highest power, the God Blast, is Universal Level in Energy Projection. Thor does not need Mjolnir in order to project this super power and even at half power, can release it on his own.

Even at half power, Thor is Universal Level in Energy Projection. Since the universe has zero sum energy, Thor’s Energy Projection is half of that energy which equals the kinetic energy of the universe in expansion.

Kinetic Energy Of Universe Expansion = (0.5 * 1.5×10^53 kg)(73300^2 m/s) = 4.0296675*10^62 J.

ENERGY PROJECTION

Augmented by Loki, Silver Surfer was able to break the worthiness enchantment on Mjolnir. The worthiness enchantment grants Thor half of his power which is Universal Level in Energy Projection.

Silver Surfer generated half of the energy of the universe in Energy Projection. In order to encase Mjolnir in his cosmic field, Silver Surfer had to generate the kinetic energy of the universe, a Universal Level of Energy Projection.

Super Power: Poison Ivy’s Control Of Plants And Vines Is The Effect Of Poisoning

POISON IVY HAS POISON IN HER CELLS

Poison Ivy is one of the deadliest femme fatales in the DC Universe. Her super power is the ability to mystically control plant life for a variety of purposes. How do her powers work?

Read on!

Chlorokinesis(Post-Crisis only): Semi-mystical connection to the plant world through a force called the Green. She was able to manipulate and animate plants, using roots to form supports for a tunnel. She controlled an entire tree to come down on Clayface, ensnaring him in its branches. She once brought a whole skyscraper down with giant vines.

Toxikinesis(Post-Crisis only): A deliberate overdose of plant and animal based toxins into her blood stream that make her touch deadly. Ivy can create the most potently powerful floral toxins in Gotham City. Often these are secreted from her lips and administered via a kiss. They come in a number of varieties, from mind controlling drugs to instantly fatal necrotics. Her skin is toxic as well, although contact with it is usually not fatal.

Pamela Isley (New Earth), DC Database

WHAT IS CHLOROKINESIS?

IMAGINE YOUR CELLS POISONED WITH CHLOROPHYLL

Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis, Pamela Isley fell in love and ended up betrayed. In Post-Crisis continuity, she was a test subject in one of Doctor Jason Woodrue’s experiments. The experiments were torturous, and Pamela was nearly killed twice. Eventually, she ended in the hospital for six months and a change in her physiology happened.

Toxins in her bloodstream made her touch deadly and immune to all poisons, viruses, bacteria, and fungi. She also gained the ability to produce pheromones that she could use to seduce men into doing her bidding. Unfortunately, the results of these experiments also left her unable to have children, and she has treated her plants as her children ever since.

Enraged at her betrayal by a man, Isley suffered violent mood swings. She later caused a boyfriend to have a car accident by bringing about a massive fungal-overgrowth in his lungs. Isley then left Seattle, eventually settling down in Gotham City.

Pamela Isley (New Earth), DC Database

In a terrorist attempt, Pamela Isley threatened to release deadly spores into the air in Gotham City. She became known as Poison Ivy.

As Poison Ivy, her chlorokinetic cells are filled with toxins that render her touch poisonous. It is possible that her cells are filled with a toxic version of chlorophyll, allowing her control over plant life.

IN ‘GOTHAM CITY SIRENS’ #4, POISON IVY SEES THROUGH THE GREEN ON A CITY-WIDE SCALE

HOW POWERFUL IS POISON IVY?

In Feat: Batman, Batman: Gotham Knights #64′, Bruce Wayne synthesizes an anti-toxin to render Poison Ivy human. Poison Ivy has 50 trillion cells in her body which are chlorokinetic and thus photosynthesize. In order to revert Poison Ivy to her human form, Batman had to revert her chlorokinetic cells to human cells. The change involved an energy projection of 1.3*10^16 Joules of biochemical energy. This corresponds to a Continent Level of Energy Projection.

IN ‘SUICIDE SQUAD’ (1987) #35, POISON IVY STATES SHE HAS ENOUGH POISON IN HER NAILS TO KILL AN ELEPHANT

Poison Ivy has enough poison in her cells to kill an elephant. From this feat, we can calculate the amount of poison in Poison Ivy’s cells: 2.3617174*10^13 Joules of energy. This is a Continent Level of Energy Projection.

Doctor Doom fought the Beyonder in the Beyond realm using the energy of Taa II. Doctor Doom was defeated and survived dissection by the Beyonder. Using his willpower, Doctor Doom overpowered Beyonder and stole his power.

Let’s estimate Doctor Doom’s willpower.

DOCTOR DOOM’S WILLPOWER

Doctor Doom has one of the strongest willpowers in the Marvel Universe. He has peered into millions of futures and he believes Doomworld is the only future where there is peace on Earth. In ‘The Avengers: Emperor Doom,’ Doctor Doom kidnaps the Purple Man in an attempt to mind control the whole Earth. In a duel, with the Purple Man, Doctor Doom resists the Purple Man’s mind control powers with his willpower alone.

In ‘The Avengers: Emperor Doom,’ in a duel, with the Purple Man, Doctor Doom resists the Purple Man’s mind control powers with his willpower alone.

Since Doctor Doom withstood Purple Man’s mind control whose powers were used to mind control the Earth, Doctor Doom’s willpower is at least Inventor.

In ‘Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars’ (1985) #10, Doctor Doom uses his willpower to steal the Beyonder’s power. In the scans, after Doctor Doom has stolen the Beyonder’s power and appears as a giant to the heroes, he claims to be the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe.

We will use these two examples to estimate Doctor Doom’s willpower.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

In the first example, since Doctor Doom resisted the Purple Man’s mind control, which was later used to mind control the Earth, his willpower is at least Inventor. Willpower is a function of mental power, so let’s calculate the power of Doctor Doom’s mind. Please refer to the Intelligence Scale.

Bytes Of Information In Doctor Doom’s Brain = (7,874,965,825 humans)(2.510*10^15 bytes)/(1 human) = 1.9766164*10^25 bytes.

In the second example, Doctor Doom overpowered Beyonder with his willpower, or the power of his mind. Since after stealing Beyonder’s power, Doctor Doom became the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe, we can estimate that his intelligence is at least equal to the Beyonder’s intelligence.

INTELLIGENCE

Since in the What If story, Doctor Doom was able to withstand the Purple Man’s mind control, it would seem his Intelligence Level is Mathematical Computation. However, in the second example, since Doctor Doom is able to overpower a true godlike being and become the Supreme Being in the Marvel Universe, his Intelligence Level is Universal.

Doctor Doom had to generate a Universal Level of Intelligence in order to overpower Beyonder with his willpower.
