DC VS MARVEL

IN TEAM-UPS AND CROSSOVERS

“A CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS”

JLA/Avengers. DC Comics.

In honor of George Perez, let’s look at a classic DC/Marvel crossover.

Furthermore, our top-rated Formidability Ranking uses four central Fighting Skills to settle the debate.

Let’s read our ranking.

JLA/AVENGERS IS CANON TO DC AND MARVEL

JLA/AVENGERS

In the classic inter-company crossover JLA/Avengers (2004), both super-teams assemble to take on a threat that threatens the Omniverse. Particularly, the series was so successful that the JLA: Syndicate Rules established the crossover to be canon to the New Earth continuity.

In contests of champions, the Grandmaster and Metron task both teams with the responsibility to assemble six items of power from each universe.

Namely, from the DC Universe: Green Lantern’s Power Battery, the Book of Eternity, the Orb of Ra, the items of the Demons Three, the Spear of Destiny and Psycho Pirate’s Medusa Mask.

From the Marvel Universe: the Ultimate Nullifier, the Evil Eye of Avalon, the Infinity Gems, the Cosmic Cube, the Casket of Ancient Winters and the Wand of Watoomb.

JLA/AVENGERS #2

In JLA/Avengers #2, the Leaguers are leading 6-5. In a titanic clash, the JLA and the Avengers face off for the Cosmic Cube. On Savage Land, a knock-out drag-out slugfest follows. Let’s rank the main contestants in the battle in terms of the Power Hierarchy.

QUALITY OPPONENTS

Generally, our formidability takes into account a character’s quality of opponents. Using this hierarchy, we can formulate a Power Hierarchy. Namely, it is the following:

Peak Human, Assassin, Metahuman, Criminal Mastermind/Team-Wrecker, Warrior, Hi-Tech Genius/Enhanced, Political Leader, Demon or Monster/Supernatural Being, Champion, Cosmic Being, Skyfather, God or Abstract.

Before we rank the JLA and Avengers, let’s list some rules.

  1. First, only beings below God or Abstract are included. God or Abstract include Galactus, Eternity, Living Tribunal, Beyonder, One-Above-All.
  2. Since we focus on battles, we will go by power levels.
  3. We are rating power levels only in issue #2.
  4. Since only the major battles are included, not all members of both teams are included.

Let’s rank our JLA and Avengers.

The Cosmic Beings

SUPERMAN
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

SUPERMAN IS A COSMIC BEING

Really, Superman‘s power levels are off the charts in the issue.

To this end, he ranks as Cosmic Being because he stops Thor’s hammer strike with his left hand.

In fact, it takes at least a Cosmic Being in order to bypass the enchantment on Thor’s Mjolnir.

Potentially, Superman could solo the Avengers team.

Indeed, it takes Hercules, Iron Man, She-Hulk, Wonder Man and Vision to put down the Man of Steel at the end of the fight.

THOR
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

THOR IS A CHAMPION

Really, Thor faces one of his toughest battles. First, he wades through a powerful blast of heat vision.

After Superman caught Mjolnir, he knocks him out with a powerful haymaker. Indeed, he is overwhelmed by Superman’s sheer power.

Generally, Thor ranks as a Champion since he is at least as powerful as the Avengers team.

ZATANNA
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

Both Zatanna and Scarlet Witch are amped by Chaos Magic.

Effectively, they are Cosmic Beings with powers of teleportation, nigh omniscience and reality-warping.

SCARLET WITCH
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

Both Zatanna and Scarlet Witch are amped by Chaos Magic.

Effectively, they are Cosmic Beings with powers of teleportation, nigh omniscience and reality-warping.

GREEN LANTERN
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

In their first match-up, Green Lantern had Photon on the ropes. As matter of fact, he caged her up in a construct.

In their second match, Photon is absorbing the Oan energy from his power ring. Fortunately, he is saved by Captain Atom.

Generally, Green Lantern is a Champion. However, he upgrades to Cosmic Being after he absorbs the energy of the Cosmic Cube.

And had he succeeded, the JLA woud have had a clean victory.

CAPTAIN MARVEL
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

To begin, Monica Rambeau has the power of converting her body into any energy in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Really, she is a Champion on the Avengers team and can take on any one.

Likely, she needs to adapt to the type of energy and has a limit to how much EM energy she can absorb.

Nonetheless, she is among the mightiest on the Avengers team.

The Champions

WONDER WOMAN
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

So far, Wonder Woman has shown she can defeat multiple Avengers. At first, she faces Hercules, Wasp and Yellowjacket.

Later, after Superman and Thor are defeated, she knocks down Yellowjacket.

Generally, Wonder Woman is a Champion in the Power Hierarchy.

GIANT MAN
Power Hierarchy: Enhanced 50%

First, Yellowjacket shrinks down to size and attacks Wonder Woman with the other Avengers.

Then, he delivers a powerful blow at increased size when Thor falls. However, Wonder Woman soon overpowers him.

With the Pym Particles, Yellowjacket is Enhanced in the Power Hierarchy.

AQUAMAN
Power Hierarchy: Champion 75%

In one instant, Aquaman defeats multiple Avengers with a sea monster.

Generally, Aquaman is a Champion in the Power Hierarchy.

AVENGERS
Power Hierarchy: Supernatural Being 67%

Generally, the Avengers add up to Hercules‘ power level, which is Supernatural Being in the Power Hierarchy.

The Peak Humans

GREEN ARROW
Power Hierarchy: Peak Human 8%

In the battle, Green Arrow and Hawkeye are in a stand-off. Though, in the end, Green Arrow has the advantage with Captain America’s help.

Generally, Green Arrow is a Peak Human in the Power Hierarchy.

HAWKEYE
Power Hierarchy: Peak Human 8%

In the battle, Green Arrow and Hawkeye are in a stand-off. Though, in the end, Captain America orders Hawkeye to stand down.

Generally, Hawkeye is a Peak Human in the Power Hierarchy.

VERDICT:

With help, the JLA won a virtual victory and the Avengers actually tied the score.
Really, lacking Flash’s Speed Force and the Avengers at full strength, the JLA are stacked with three Cosmic Beings and two Champions.
Generally, the underdog Avengers even things with better teamwork and preparation.
JLA wins a difficult fight.

And that’s our ranking! Please rate our article or share with friends and followers if you liked the DC vs Marvel.

ENCHANTRESS AND POWER MAN DEFEAT THE AVENGERS

In Avengers (1965) #21, Erik Josten is in the Amazon jungle. There, the former Baron Zemo agent is digging through rubble for the entrance through his lab. Since he is a wanted criminal in Europe, he hopes to repeat the experiment that created the super-powered Wonder Man. In this way, he hopes to change his fate. As fate would have it, the mischievous Enchantress views Erik in a vision and departs to his aid. There, she appears to him in the lab. Mischievously, she promises to work the machine for him.

When he gains super strength, Enchantress seduces the newly-christened Power Man to destroy the Avengers. Soon enough, Enchantress creates illusions around the city of the Avengers destroying property. When Cap’ learns of their plot, he fights Power Man. But he is no match for the super strong enemy. Afterwards, each Avenger is defeated except for Scarlet Witch. In humiliation, the Avengers are caught for trespassing and soon disband.

Meanwhile, Captain America poses as a publicity man. Successfully, he records Power Man on tape admitting his crime. Finally, the Avengers band together and defeat Power Man and Enchantress. With the tape, the Avengers clear their names. However, Cap’ leaves the Avengers at the end of the issue.

IN CIVIL RIGHTS

THE HEROES OF EARTH SHOULD HAVE BANDED TOGETHER

In New Avengers: Illuminati (2006) #1, the Illuminati forms. After the Kree-Skrull war, Iron Man convenes a meeting. In attendance are Mister Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, King Namor, Black Bolt and Professor X. As matter of fact, Iron Man and the attendees recognize the war could have been averted. Indeed, it would if the different superhero teams had pooled resources and intel.

Despite their acknowledgements, the meeting highlights the differences among the various factions. For his part, Iron Man favors forming a delegation of superheroes to serve a united front against future threats. However, his idea is opposed by every other attendee, especially Namor. In some sense, Iron Man proves prescient as this move could have averted the major crisis to befall the Marvel Universe: Civil War. Though, the Illuminati forms.

In 'New Avengers: Illuminati' (2006) #1, the Illuminati forms.
In New Avengers: Illuminati (2006) #1, the Illuminati forms. Marvel Comics.

IRON MAN’S FUTURISM COULD HAVE PREVENTED CIVIL WAR

Forward in time, after House of M, the Illuminati convenes. Due to House of M, Professor X is absent. During the meeting, Iron Man informs them of important news. Recently, the U.S. government is planning on passing the Superhero Registration Act. As a result of House of M, 198 and Secret War, this is a likely development. Really, Tony explains how his mind and Reed’s work. As an inventor, industrialist and businessman, Tony is a futurist.

Hence, he is able to predict social trends and what people need. Correctly, he predicts what the New Warriors would later do in their quest for fame. Consequently, he advises the Illuminati to get onboard. However, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt and King Namor forcefully refuse. Only Mister Fantastic agrees. Though Tony’s views are extreme, they highlight the fact he was correct: Early on, the heroes of Earth should have formed a delegation. In the end, the Illuminati were a missed opportunity.

THE DIFFERENT TEAMS AT THE END OF HOUSE OF M

X-MEN

At the end of the story, Scarlet Witch uttered the spell “no more mutants.” Only 198 mutants remain on Earth. At Xavier’s Institute, Emma Frost finds out that many mutants are powerless. In the issue, the X-Men find a depowered Magneto in Genosha. About Wanda, here whereabouts are unknown.

NEW AVENGERS

At Avengers Tower, the memories of the New Avengers have been restored. In shock, Doctor Strange feels he has failed his duty to protect Earth. For his part, Spider-Man demands that Strange erase their memories of House of M. To which Doctor Strange declines. Unfortunately, the New Avengers face Hawkeye‘s apparent death.

House of M. Marvel Comics.

TIMES WHEN IRON MAN WAS CORRECT

AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED

In Avengers Disassembled: Chaos, the Avengers are attacked by a mysterious force. First, there is the resurrected Jack-Of-Hearts who attacks Avengers Mansion. Then Tony is inexplicably drunk without having a drink.

This leads to a violent outburst at the U.N. Then, Vision attacks the Avengers. Finally, She-Hulk brutally rips Vision apart. Correctly, Iron Man realizes that the attacks are connected. Though the Avengers disagree.

AVX

In AvX, Tony is correct twice. The first time, he correctly designs a Phoenix-Killer Armor. Powerfully, he detonates it on the moon. Though the Phoenix is destroyed, it splits into the Phoenix Five.

Later, Iron Man correctly deduces the reason for the Phoenix Force’s return to Earth. The Phoenix Force and Chaos Magic are like yin and yang. Indeed, the Phoenix returned because of Scarlet Witch’s “no more mutants.”

CIVIL WAR II

In Civil War II, Tony comes into blows with Carol Danvers. During an invasion by a Celestial Destructor, the Ultimates used information from an Inhuman. Namely, Ulysses provided information to save the day. When Captain Marvel wanted Ulysses to join the Ultimates, Iron Man opposed the decision.

Correctly, he questioned Ulysses’ mysterious powers, whether the future can be changed and the morality of pre-emptive strikes. Though conflict soon followed with several tragedies. Such as the deaths of War Machine and Hulk. After, there was a final battle between Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Apparently, Tony died. In the end, jumping between futures, Ulysses vanished to meet Eternity.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND SCORES

To begin, this comics revamps the origin stories of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Mysteriously, the Unity Division must travel to Counter Earth. Indeed, a new menace has arisen that threatens the Uncanny Avengers. In addition, the two protagonists discover they are the result of their father’s genetic experiments.

The comic is excellent for your collection. You will definitely love the muted color palette told in five to six panel layouts. This is the comic to own in order to build your Kindle and Comixology collection.

This product has excellent reviews and has 136 global ratings with an average customer review rating of 4.5 out of 5. There is a great satisfaction with the product.

One customer review said: “Anyone who has yet to check out the writing of Mr. Remender is missing out on one of the best writers in comics today. I’ve read just about everything he’s written since picking up his run on Uncanny X-force and have yet to be disappointed. In this volume he brings together the best of both sides of the marvel universe and shows people what can happen when humans and mutants work together. Anyone looking for something different from the run of the mill super hero comics out there needs to check this out.”

In addition, there are seven negative global ratings. One negative review cited Red Skull’s over-exposure: “Poor illustration and barely any actual team I interaction. Plus enough of the Red Skull already. I regret this purchase.”

Overall, this graphic novel was great.

CONCLUSION

POSITIVE:

  • Kindle and Comixology formats available.
  • Good writing.

NEGATIVE:

  • Villain over-exposure.

To begin, “House of M” is the most important X-Men comic of the 2000s decade. In a few words, the comic runs through the Marvel Universe and brings together the Avengers and the X-Men. In fact, both teams are banded against the overwhelming threat of the Scarlet Witch.

This product has excellent reviews and has 1182 global ratings with an average customer review rating of 4.7 out of 5. There is a great satisfaction with the product.

One customer review said: “House of M revolutionizes the Marvel Comic World and, in a way, starts the X-Men series over again. While House of M does not move particularly quickly (not many flashy battle scenes), it certainly adds a lot of psychological depth to many familiar characters like Wolverine, Magneto, Quicksilver, Spiderman, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and a host of others, as we the readers witness what the world would be like if each mutant had their ideal life.”

The reviews were overall very positive with 26 negative reviews. A problem cited by a negative review was the lack of emotional resonance: “An absolutely dreadful example of the tedium that is Bendis’ writing. His trouble is simple: In the superhero genre, which is innately or (at least historically) one rooted in action, he too often eschews action to try to hit emotional, personal beats. Sadly, he displays no understanding of people and our emotions.”

Overall, this graphic novel was great.

CONCLUSION

POSITIVE:

  • Kindle and Comixology formats available.
  • Free purchase with Comixology Unlimited membership.
  • Excellent Customer Review Ratings.

NEGATIVE:

  • Poor writer.

OUR PRODUCT REVIEW RATING:

I recommend this comic as an important contribution to comic book history.

Critically injured, he states “it’s coming” before falling into a coma. Later, at a White House, Captain America and Iron Man brief the President on recent events. Briefly, Iron Man has analyzed the energy signature on Nova’s uniform. Sinisterly, it points to the Phoenix coming to Earth. Importantly, it is locking for a host in order to potentially lay waste to Earth.

Suddenly, Tony’s programs signal a Phoenix flare on Earth. Soon, Captain America meets Wolverine at the Jean Grey School For Higher Learning. Despite his resistance, Cap recruits Wolverine. Indeed, he intends to convince Scott Summers to stop the Phoenix threat. Previously, Cyclops and Hope Summers are training for the Phoenix’s arrival. As Cyclops pushes Hope to her limits, the young mutant manifests the Phoenix Force. Later, Captain America comes to Utopia to take Hope Summers into protective custody.

When neither side has the upper hand, Wolverine and Spider-Man seek out Hope. There, they find Hope having dealt with the Lights. However, before Wolverine can gut her, Hope blasts him and Spider-Man. Then, she makes her escape.

In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #3, Wolverine comes to an hour later. Quickly, he realizes Cyclops’ surrender is a ruse. In fact, Magik has created the illusion that she is Doctor Strange transporting herself. Before he can act, the X-Men teleport to Long Beach to hunt down Hope. At Avengers Tower, Marvel Girl tells Wolverine they have traced Hope’s energy signature to five different locations.

In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #4, Hope recruits Wolverine on a mission to the moon. There, she hopes to bond with the Phoenix. On site, Wolverine betrays Hope and gives her location to the Avengers.

At the same time, Emma Frost intercepts Cap’s transmission. Soon, the X-Men meet the Avengers in the Blue Area of the moon. In ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ (2012) #5, the X-Men battle the Avengers. In an explosive battle, Hope rejects the Phoenix. At the same time, Iron Man’s Phoenix-Killer Armor detonates the Phoenix splitting it. As the smoke disappears, the Phoenix Five rise from the ashes. Certainly, the Phoenix Five seem unstoppable. However, Captain America and the Avengers question their new-found omnipotence. Seeing the Phoenix Five as a threat, they commandeer a tactical mission to retrieve Hope Summers.

When Utopia is under attack, Scott’s adoptive granddaughter changes sides with the Avengers. Decisively, it turns the battle and shatters Cyclops’ humanity. On the Blue Area of the moon, Scott consults with Jean Grey created out of moon dust. From there, he decides to rid the world of the Avengers. Earlier, Scarlet Witch had a grim vision where the Phoenix Five annihilated the Avengers. Soon, that vision may come to pass.

In a titanic battle, Cyclops is omnipresent on Earth across time and space. Earlier, Tony reveals that the reason the Phoenix has been defeated by Scarlet Witch. Really, the Phoenix and Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Magic are like yin and yang. In fact, when Wanda said “no more mutants”, Phoenix said “more mutants.”1

During the battle, Hope and Scarlet Witch go toe-to-toe with Cyclops. In a final Iron Fist punch, Hope fells Cyclops. With Cyclops defeated, Hope claims the Phoenix. Sensing the urgency, Wanda helps her extinguish the Phoenix flame. At the same time, the Phoenix is used to recreate the mutant population on Earth. In the end, though homo superior survives, it is at great cost. Indeed, Professor X is dead, Cyclops is in custody, and the X-Men are divided among themselves. Visiting Scott in prison, Cap acknowledges his responsibility. Over the years, he did not work sufficiently for mutants’ civil rights and plans to set up the Uncanny Avengers.
