IN READING GUIDES, LISTS, REVIEWS

In the Marvel multiverse, the Avengers are the premiere superhero-team. In battles to defend Earth and the universe against villains, tyrants, and conquerors, two Avengers challenge each other for the title of Marvel’s Superman. Indeed, the battle for the title is between the Avenger Hyperion, and the Mighty Avenger Sentry.

Let’s list five reasons why Hyperion in his alternate versions is Marvel’s most powerful hero and five reasons why Sentry is Marvel’s Superman.

10. SENTRY WAS CREATED TO BE MARVEL’S SUPERMAN

Importantly, Sentry was created as an answer to DC’s flagship hero, Superman. Moreover, the context of the character’s creation involved a hoax concerning artist Artie Rosen’s sketches of Stan Lee’s forgotten sketches for a Marvel Silver age superhero. Certainly, the character debuted in Sentry (2000) #1, with great fanfare.

9. EARTH-616 HYPERION WAS THE FIRST MARVEL SUPERMAN

Indeed, Hyperion is the first Marvel Superman pastiche. In the classic Silver Age story, Avengers (1969) #69, Hyperion and the Squadron Sinister make their first appearance. In the comic, Grandmaster creates clones of the Squadron Supreme in order to defeat the Avengers. Certainly, this is Thor’s first true rival in the period.

8. SENTRY HAS THE POWER OF A MILLION EXPLODING SUNS

To promote the Marvel Superman moniker, Brian Bendis tells the origin story of Sentry in Dark Avengers (2010) #13. His civilian identity is Robert Reynolds, a drug addict who breaks into a Project: Sentry lab and ingests the Super Soldier Serum. Incredibly, he survives and gains the power of a million exploding suns. Later, he creates a costume and begins a superhero career.

7. HYPERION LEADS THE SQUADRON SUPREME, THE AVENGERS’ RIVALS

Comically, the Squadron Supreme is a Justice League pastiche. Among their members are: Hyperion their leader, Doctor Spectrum, Skylark, Whizzer, Power Princess, Haywire, Shape and Moonglow. In Avengers (1998) #5, the Avengers and the Squadron face-off for the title of Marvel’s premiere team. It turns out, the battle is a diversion for the villain Imus Champion’s scheme.

6. VOID SENTRY BATTLED MARVEL EARTH

Unfortunately, Sentry’s central hubris is his mental instability. With his bond to the vampiric entity named the Void, the Sentry may be the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe. In Siege (2010) #4, Norman Osborn manipulates him to invade Asgard and battle Earth’s heroes. Tragically, he begs the God of Thunder to kill him in the Thor vs Void Sentry battle.

5. EARTH-712 HYPERION IS THOR’S MATCH

In Avengers (1998) #6, the Avengers and the Squadron Supreme get into round two of their battle. Once again, Hyperion proves to be Thor’s physical match. Later, it is shown that the Squadron Supreme was actually mind-controlled.

4. SENTRY ONCE STOPPED A CELESTIAL FROM STOMPING THE EARTH

Certainly, Sentry has proven that he is Marvel’s Superman. When the situation is critical, the Marvel Universe calls upon him. In Uncanny Avengers (2014) #21, Sentry with Rogue’s help saves the world from catastrophe. In a times of crisis, the Unity Division pools together the powers of all Avengers and X-Men into Rogue. Alongside the X-Woman, he stops Exitar‘s foot from stomping the Earth to destroy it.

3. EARTH-13034 HYPERION IS AN ETERNAL WHO SURVIVED A MULTIVERSAL INCURSION

Heroically, an alternate Hyperion faithfully parodies DC’s Superman in Avengers (2012) #1: On Earth-13034, Hyperion was sent to Earth as the only survivor from the race of Eternals. Adopted by a human, he is named Marcus Milton and taught morality. As an adult, he becomes a superhero with the Squadron Supreme. However, when a multiversal incusion occurs, Hyperion survives the two universes’ destruction and ends on the Earth-616 universe.

2. AN ALL-OUT SENTRY STALEMATED WORLD WAR HULK

Perhaps, World War Hulk is Hulk’s most powerful form yet. When Hulk returns to Earth from his banishment by the Illuminati on Skaar, the Jade Giant invades the planet. To put an end to gladiatorial combats, Sentry returns to Avengers service. In World War Hulk (2005) #5, an all-out battle follows where both combatants fight until both revert to their civilian identities. Though only Bruce Banner is left standing.

1. IN HEROES REBORN, AN ALTERNATE HYPERION DEFEATS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

Really, Hyperion is Marvel’s most powerful hero. In Heroes Reborn #2, Earth-TRN852 the Avengers do not exist. There, Hyperion and the Squadron Supreme protects America. When he sends Dr. Juggernaut to the Negative Zone, the villains escape. And he is forced to capture them all. Faced with the Hulk, Hyperion decides to kill the monster with his optic beams.

At the end of the fight, both warriors reverted to their human forms. However, Bruce Banner was the last one standing while Robert Reynolds collapsed. Indeed, proving Hulk is the strongest there is.

However, if strength is one thing, power is quite another. If strength is about raw potential, power is about strength, skill and mastery. Over the years, Hulk has faced foes with overwhelming power who have definitely defeated him. Let’s list heroes and villains who are more powerful than Hulk.

HEROES AND VILLAINS MORE POWERFUL

DOCTOR DOOM

In 'Incredible Hulk' (2011) #7, Doctor Doom defeats Perfect Hulk.
In Incredible Hulk (2011) #7, Doctor Doom defeats Perfect Hulk. DC Comics.

In the Marvel Universe, no supervillain is more lustful and proud than Doctor Doom. Generally, Doctor Doom does not want to destroy the world. Really, the Baron of Iron intends to rule.

Despite his unlimited strength, Hulk has weaknesses. Among his weaknesses, is magic. Particularly, Doctor Doom is unique for his union of science and sorcery. In fact, he is a powerful mage who once contended as a runner-up for the title of Sorcerer Supreme.

In a battle, Doctor Doom’s invulnerable Armor, mystic blasts and esoteric powers are more than a match for Hulk’s strength. Furthermore, Doom’s super-genius intelligence can definitely exploit Hulk’s lack of intelligence.

In Incredible Hulk (2011) #7, Doctor Doom defeats Perfect Hulk. In the issue, Doom separated Hulk from Bruce Banner creating Perfect Hulk. Later, Hulk returns blaming Doom for the Behemoth having killed Bruce Banner. Soon, a fight follows. Though short-lived, it highlights Doctor Doom’s magic and intelligence advantages.

Definitely, Doctor Doom ranks among the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.

COSMIC KING THOR

In 'Thor' (2020) #6, Cosmic King Thor kills Galactus.
In Thor (2020) #6, Cosmic King Thor kills Galactus. Marvel Comics.

Over the years, Thor and Hulk have been considered rivals. Though, Hulk has often been considered the strongest Avenger. At IGN, Jesse Schedeen argues Thor Just Managed to Kill [Spoiler], Proving He Actually Is the Strongest Avenger.

In 2020, Cosmic King Thor dramatically outclassed the competition. During Donny Cates’ run, titled Devourer King, King Thor becomes Cosmic King Thor, Herald of Galactus. To begin, Galactus and Silver Surfer come to Asgard to warn of the Black Winter. To stop it, Thor agrees to become Galactus’ Herald.

However, it comes at a cost. To prepare for the calamity, Thor helps Galactus consume five planets. Finally, the Black Winter arrives. After testing Thor, it reveals the King dreadful visions of the future. In the end, Thor realizes that he must fulfill Galactus’ prophecy: he is the one to kill Galactus. In one powerful blast, Thor throws his hammer at the Star God, incinerating him immediately.

And considering Thor’s godblast is Universal-Level and a fully-fed Galactus can withstand the core of a galaxy. Definitely, at least a Universal-Level of Energy Projection.

Without a doubt, Hulk has the potential for Infinite Super Strength. Though, Thor’s energy projection can deal some serious damage. In a battle, it is a matter of whether Hulk can withstand a Universe-busting attack from Thor.

ANNIHILATION SILVER SURFER

In Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus (2007) #2, Silver Surfer absorbs the energy of the Big Crunch to defeat Proemial Gods. Marvel Comics.

To this day, Annihilation Silver Surfer is the most popular version of the character. For good measure. During the Annihilation event, Silver Surfer and the United Front fight off an invasion from the Negative Zone. To this end, Annihilus aided by Thanos, has imprisoned Galactus to use as a bomb.

In order to face this crisis, Galactus increases Surfer’s power. Though, he tampers with his personality. Back to active service, Silver Surfer becomes a challenger to even Thor post-Annihilation.

Amazingly, one of the Sentinel’s most well-known feats during Annihilation, is his fight against two Proemial Gods. Notably, Proemial Gods derive their powers from the Big Crunch, the end of the universe.

In Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus (2007) #2, Silver Surfer defeats Tenebrous and Aegis. Initially, no match for the two gods, Silver Surfer lays in space badly wounded. Then, he elects to absorb the energies of the Big Crunch. Soon, he fells his foes. Fortunately, Galactus arrives and heals Surfer who is near death.

In the Marvel Universe, Silver Surfer is one of the top energy manipulators. Over the years, Silver Surfer has dominated Hulk in battles. Using the Power Cosmic, the Silver Surfer has often tampered with Hulk’s rage. In effect, calming the monster and reverting him to Bruce Banner.

Visit Silver Surfer vs Thor.

VOID SENTRY

In Siege (2010) #4, Thor and the Avengers face Void Sentry.

At Marvel, there have been many Marvel Supermen versions: Hyperion, Blue Marvel, Gladiator and even Sentry. Among them, Sentry has been the most successful. Perhaps, the most powerful Marvel Superman.

What makes Sentry tick is the fact that he is mentally unstable with the overwhelming power of a god. In fact, he has been stated to possess the power of a million exploding suns.

In World War Hulk, Sentry clashed with Hulk’s most powerful version. What resulted, was a thrilling fight with planet-busting punches and a tornado of searing energy blasts. Both characters went all-out. And at the end, only Bruce Banner was left standing.

However, that was not Sentry’s most powerful version. In Siege (2010) #4, Thor and the Avengers faced Void Sentry. As Void Sentry, Robert Reynolds is an abstract being of horrifying power. Moreover, the entity literally thrashed the entire Avengers team. Indeed, only the power of a god – a Thunder God – is able to conquer him. Proving that when push comes to shove, Thor and Sentry rank ahead of Hulk in terms of power.

SUPERMAN AND HULK HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR INFINITE STRENGTH

In 'Final Crisis: Superman Beyond' (2008) #1, Superman and Captain Marvel lift the Book of Limbo, a book with an infinite number of pages.
In ‘Final Crisis: Superman Beyond’ (2008) #1, Superman and Captain Marvel lift the Book of Limbo, a book with an infinite number of pages. DC Comics.

At DC and Marvel, Superman and Hulk are the top two powerhouses in terms of super strength. Previously, we showcased five feats where Superman demonstrated the potential for infinite super strength.

At the same time, Hulk has shown on many occasions feats of infinite power. To find out about Hulk’s time travel feat, visit THE Marvel Universe Strength Hierarchy Ranks The Top 10 Heroes And Villains By The Potential For Infinite Strength.

Over the years, flaming wars have raged over who is the stronger: the Last Son of Krypton or the Green Behemoth. Indeed, if Superman has near-limitless strength, the madder Hulk gets, the stronger he gets.

Though they are in the same strength class, let’s list five reasons why Superman may be stronger.

5 REASONS WHY SUPERMAN IS STRONGER THAN HULK

5. GREATER WILLPOWER

In Action Comics (1987) #589, Superman increases the GL energy beam by 20 percent with his willpower.
In Action Comics (1987) #589, Superman increases the GL energy beam by 20 percent with his willpower. DC Comics.

To begin, one of Superman’s greatest strengths in his fights is his willpower. Despite overwhelming odds, Superman never backs down but continues fighting.

Over the years, it has been explained that Superman has some of the strongest willpowers in the DC Universe.

At one point, Superman was a candidate to receive a Green Lantern ring. In Action Comics (1987) #589, Superman and the Green Lanterns fight a mount of dirt.

In an assault, Superman adds his willpower to the GL beams, increasing it by 20 percent.

Though Hulk also has unbelievable willpower. However, in most incarnations, he lacks the corresponding intelligence.

And in a battle against such a savage foe, willpower is everything.

4. STRONGER ENEMIES

In ‘Superman/Batman’ (2004) #13, Superman is angry at the death of Kara Zor-El and battles Darkseid.
In ‘Superman/Batman’ (2004) #13, Superman is angry at the death of Kara Zor-El and battles Darkseid. DC Comics.

Notably, this argument is debatable. Indeed, Hulk regularly meets with top-tier and cosmic-level foes.

Some of them include the U-Foes, Abomination, High Evolutionary, Silver Surfer, Thor, Sentry, Galaxy Master and even Marvel Zeus.

However, Hulk has suffered from low-quality opponents. Due to his baseline strength being lower, Hulk has had trouble with street-level opponents.

For example, Spider-Man once knocked out Hulk with a punch.

In the Post-Crisis continuity, Superman more often fights opponents in his strength class.

Many are Superman-level, but others like Darkseid, Brainiac 13, Fernus, Imperiex, Dominus and Mandrakk are Planetary, Universal to Multiversal-level threats.

3. BETTER LIFTING FEATS

DC Comics.

Perhaps, one department of super strength that truly separates Superman and Hulk is lifting feats.

Unquestionably, Hulk has better striking feats. In fact, his punches often explode with the force of bombs, or turn back time.

However, Superman may outclass Hulk in raw strength. On two occasions, he has pushed past the boundaries of infinity.

In Final Crisis: Superman Beyond (2008) #1, Superman and Captain Marvel/Shazam lift the Book of Limbo. Indeed, it contains infinite pages all occupying the same space.

On another occasion, Superman lifted eternity. In JLA/Spectre: Soul War (2003) #1, Superman and Wonder Woman lift Spectre.

2. SAVING THE DAY

In 'Justice League' (2019) #25, in a battle against the World Forger, Superman breaches the Sixth Dimension and shatters the Forger's Multiverse creation with a punch.
In ‘Justice League’ (2019) #25, in a battle against the World Forger, Superman breaches the Sixth Dimension and shatters the Forger’s Multiverse creation with a punch. DC Comics.

In Superman, The Greatest Story, I argue that Superman is the strongest hero. Both on the strength of his story and by feats.

What really makes Superman work, is that he is the quintessential American superhero. In fact, Superman always saves the day.

In part, it is due to his willpower. Also, it is due to his humanity. Indeed, proving that super strength is also a matter of determination.

Though, Hulk also is a superhero. However, he lacks at times his humanity. In fact, a factor that may mean life or death in a crisis.

1. BETTER FIGHTER

n Superman/Batman (2005) #23, Superman uses pressure points on a Kryptonite-Man-possessed Batman.
In Superman/Batman (2005) #23, Superman uses pressure points on a Kryptonite-Man-possessed Batman. DC Comics.

When it comes to fighting, both superheroes have had a bad reputation. Over the years, Hulk has been viewed as a mindless brute.

At the same time, Superman has often fought like a brawler. Generally, Superman is the better fighter.

Post-Crisis, he has received combat training from Mongul, Batman and Wonder Woman.

In Superman/Batman (2005) #23, Superman uses the pressure point technique against a Kryptonite-Man possessed Batman.

In addition, Superman has mastered the Infinite Mass Punch. Recently, in Rebirth, Superman performed the speedblitz on Doomsday.

THE STRONGEST MARVEL HEROES AND VILLAINS HAVE POTENTIAL FOR INFINITE STRENGTH

In Avengers’ (2013) #4, Hyperion performs a super strength feat. In a flashback, Hyperion’s origin story is told: He survived the destruction of his home world in an incursion event that collapsed two universes together by holding them apart until they eventually collapsed. AP Photo/Marvel Comics.

In the Marvel Universe, the strongest heroes are gods, aliens, cyborgs and superhumans. Super strength appears primarily to be a super power gained in addition to other super powers either by accident, enchantment, science or alien physiology. In particular, super strength is the result of being a god, mutant, alien or superhuman. The strongest heroes such as Thor or Hulk, perform feats of super strength in difficult situations. By our standards, the strongest heroes display the potential for infinite strength. This list ranks them according to their greatest feats of super strength.

In the Olympian mythology, the heavens are the realm where the gods dwell and a potentially infinite dimension. In ‘Incredible Hercules’ (2008) #121, Hercules lifted the heavens to complete his Eleventh Labor. Here, Hercules demonstrated potentially infinite super strength. This feat has been talked about on the Internet and is the reason why Hercules deserves the top spot on this list.

In ‘Secret Wars II’ (1986) #8, the multiversal entity known as the Beyonder stated Hulk has the potential for unlimited super strength. At ScreenRant, Jose Caraballo tells a Bronze Age Hulk story. In a plot to defeat the Avengers, Kang the Conqueror theorizes the superhero team banded together in order to stop the Hulk. To this end, Kang travels from the 41st century to the present day Hulk.

Slyly, he tricks and recruits Hulk to time travel to World War I in order to prevent the Phantom Eagle from destroying an Axis super cannon. The effect would be to destroy a town where Hulk’s ancestors live thereby, preventing Hulk’s existence. During the time travel, the Green Goliath is caught in a time storm. However, the Marcus Milton of Earth-13034 once performed a feat that showcased his potential for infinite strength. Sentry has been stated to possess the power of a million exploding suns and was introduced to be Marvel’s version of Superman. Over the years, Sentry has shown the potential for limitless power. During “Siege,” he briefly took on Thor and the Avengers assembled. While discovering his powers, he demolecularized the Molecule Man who has the powers of the Beyonders on the Multiversal scale. But what about super strength?

During “To Avenge The Earth” storyline, a reborn Sentry was brought in to save the day. To prepare against the coming of Exitar the Celestial, who was stomping the Earth, Rogue had to absorb the powers of the Avengers, X-Men, and various other superheroes. With those powers, Rogue was able to slow the descent of only one of Exitar’s feet. Proving he is stronger than all the heroes combined, Sentry was able to hold the other foot on his own super strength.

Considering the Celestials weigh 260 tons or more, slowing down their descent in free fall shows the potential for infinite strength.

Thor is a Marvel superhero with indomitable willpower. In battle, he always seems to push himself past his limits. In fact, he is the Asgardian God of Thunder. In “Thor: Worldengine,” Thor performs one of his most OP feats yet. Following his would-be murder, Yggdrasil is thrown in disarray and the Asgardians fear a new Ragnarok. Thor investigates and finds out about a Worldengine in New York tampering with Yggdrasil.

Is Stormbreaker more powerful than Mjolnir? To this day, Beta Ray Bill remains Thor’s truest brother-in-arms. What makes Beta Ray Bill so powerful is that he is as worthy of Mjolnir as Thor is. In the comics, Stormbreaker is at least Mjolnir’s equal. Considering that Mjolnir’s worthiness enchantment is half of Thor’s power that means Mjolnir has at least Universal Level of power.

In ‘Stormbreaker: The Saga Of Beta Ray Bill’ (2005) #2, Galactus attempts to feed on New Korbin. Beta Ray Bill comes in and courageously engages Galactus in battle. Miraculously, Bill cracks Galactus’ armor with Stormbreaker. From “The Coming Of Galactus”, we learn that it takes the Ultimate Nullifier a weapon capable of laying waste to the Marvel Universe in order to defeat Galactus.
