Super Power: Poison Ivy’s Control Of Plants And Vines Is The Effect Of Poisoning

Poison Ivy is one of the deadliest femme fatales in the DC Universe. Her super power is the ability to mystically control plant life for a variety of purposes. How do her powers work?

Read on!

Chlorokinesis(Post-Crisis only): Semi-mystical connection to the plant world through a force called the Green. She was able to manipulate and animate plants, using roots to form supports for a tunnel. She controlled an entire tree to come down on Clayface, ensnaring him in its branches. She once brought a whole skyscraper down with giant vines.

Toxikinesis(Post-Crisis only): A deliberate overdose of plant and animal based toxins into her blood stream that make her touch deadly. Ivy can create the most potently powerful floral toxins in Gotham City. Often these are secreted from her lips and administered via a kiss. They come in a number of varieties, from mind controlling drugs to instantly fatal necrotics. Her skin is toxic as well, although contact with it is usually not fatal.

Pamela Isley (New Earth), DC Database

WHAT IS CHLOROKINESIS?

IMAGINE YOUR CELLS POISONED WITH CHLOROPHYLL

Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis, Pamela Isley fell in love and ended up betrayed. In Post-Crisis continuity, she was a test subject in one of Doctor Jason Woodrue’s experiments. The experiments were torturous, and Pamela was nearly killed twice. Eventually, she ended in the hospital for six months and a change in her physiology happened.

Toxins in her bloodstream made her touch deadly and immune to all poisons, viruses, bacteria, and fungi. She also gained the ability to produce pheromones that she could use to seduce men into doing her bidding. Unfortunately, the results of these experiments also left her unable to have children, and she has treated her plants as her children ever since.

Enraged at her betrayal by a man, Isley suffered violent mood swings. She later caused a boyfriend to have a car accident by bringing about a massive fungal-overgrowth in his lungs. Isley then left Seattle, eventually settling down in Gotham City.

Pamela Isley (New Earth), DC Database

In a terrorist attempt, Pamela Isley threatened to release deadly spores into the air in Gotham City. She became known as Poison Ivy.

As Poison Ivy, her chlorokinetic cells are filled with toxins that render her touch poisonous. It is possible that her cells are filled with a toxic version of chlorophyll, allowing her control over plant life.

IN ‘GOTHAM CITY SIRENS’ #4, POISON IVY SEES THROUGH THE GREEN ON A CITY-WIDE SCALE

HOW POWERFUL IS POISON IVY?

In Feat: Batman, Batman: Gotham Knights #64′, Bruce Wayne synthesizes an anti-toxin to render Poison Ivy human. Poison Ivy has 50 trillion cells in her body which are chlorokinetic and thus photosynthesize. In order to revert Poison Ivy to her human form, Batman had to revert her chlorokinetic cells to human cells. The change involved an energy projection of 1.3*10^16 Joules of biochemical energy. This corresponds to a Continent Level of Energy Projection.

IN ‘SUICIDE SQUAD’ (1987) #35, POISON IVY STATES SHE HAS ENOUGH POISON IN HER NAILS TO KILL AN ELEPHANT

Poison Ivy has enough poison in her cells to kill an elephant. From this feat, we can calculate the amount of poison in Poison Ivy’s cells: 2.3617174*10^13 Joules of energy. This is a Continent Level of Energy Projection.

Sentry demolecularized Molecule Man in order to force him to restore the Dark Avengers and the people at Dinosaur, Colorado. In order to calculate the energy projection, we will calculate the bond enthalpies of the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, salt and water found in Owen Reece’s 63.5 kg body.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

Sentry demolecularized Molecule Man. This involves separating the covalent, ionic and hydrogen bonds between Molecule Man’s proteins, fats, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and salt molecules.

We use “Chemical Composition Of The Human Body” to find their percentages.

Bond Enthalpy Of Palmitate In Human Body = (208000 J/mol)(1 mol/256.4 g)(70000 g0.16) = 9085803.43214 J.
Bond Enthalpy Of Protein In Human Body = (1500 J/mol)(1 mol/12100 g)(70000 g0.16) = 1388.42975207 J.
Bond Enthalpy Of Glucose In Human Body = (9546000 J/mol)(1 mol/180.16 g)(70000 g0.01) = 37090364.1208 J.
Bond Enthalpy Of Salt = (760000 J/mol)(1 mol/58.443 g)(70000 g0.06) = 54617319.4395 J.
Bond Enthalpy Of Water = (458900 J/mol)(1 mol/18.01528 g)(70000 g*0.62) = 1105520424.88 J.

The total bond enthalpy in Molecule Man’s 63.5 kg body is found from the total bond enthalpy above multiplied by the 63.5 kg/70 kg ratio.

Total Bond Enthalpy In Molecule Man’s Body = (63.5 kg/70 kg)(1206325300.3 J) = 1094309379.56 J.

ENERGY PROJECTION

Sentry demolecularized Molecule Man by dissociating all the bonds in Molecule Man’s 63.5 kg body.

Sentry generated 1094309379.56 Joules of biochemical energy to demolecularize Molecule Man. Sentrt had to generate a Continent Level of Energy Projection.

In the ‘Reign Of The Supermen’ storyline, Cyborg Superman recruits Mongul I and the help of Warworld, in order to destroy Coast City. After the return of Superman from the dead, Green Lantern is overwhelmed with grief over the destruction of Coast City. He sees the huge crater created by Cyborg Superman megalomaniacial ambitions and remembers the death of Abin Sur who in his dying breaths sent the ring to select him, Hal Jordan, as his replacement. Then, Hal wants to do anything with his ring. Even, yes, recreate Coast City with power ring constructs.

THE ORIGIN OF PARALLAX

Fast forward along the timeline after the destruction of Coast City and Hal Jordan becoming Parallax then bonding to the Spectre. In ‘Green Lantern: Rebirth’ (2005) #3, the demonic insectoid entity named Parallax is coming to Earth. And it is coming to claim Hal Jordan’s soul bonded to the Spectre. As the JLA finds itself with Hal Jordan’s dead body on the Watchtower, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner tells Green Arrow the story of Parallax.

On the tenth planet from the sun Pagallus, Green Lantern was warned of the arrival of Parallax and one of their elders told him Parallax’s origin story: Originally, Parallax was born at the beginning of sentience. It was a demonic monster that infected planets with fear causing entire civilizations to be eradicated by paranoia and violence. Parallax fed on fear while the Guardians of the Universe used willpower to forge the Central Power Battery of Oa and to combat the threat.

In ‘Green Lantern: Rebirth’ (2005) #3, the demonic insectoid entity named Parallax is coming to Earth. AP Photo/DC Comics.

The opposite energies could not destroy each other. So the Guardians imprisoned Parallax “put into a comatose state” on the Central Battery of Oa.1 Over the millennia, Parallax became known as the yellow impurity. That explains why the power ring could initially not work on the color yellow. Kyle added that “only someone able to overcome great fear would master the power ring.”1

Parallax was apparently dead for billions of years. Then, one day, Parallax was weak, hungry and looked through the Central Power Battery AI to reach a power ring of a suitable host with a strong will. It found Hal Jordan. Over the years, it worked subtly to influence Hal, sowing self-doubt and fear. The first signs were the streaks of white hair. And then, the destruction of Coast City warped Parallax’s control over Hal Jordan causing his decimation of the Green Lantern Corps. Until Hal Jordan became… Parallax.

DRIVEN MAD BY PARALLAX’S POSSESSION, GREEN LANTERN DECIMATES THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS

In ‘Green Lantern’ (1994) #48, Hal Jordan’s constructs of Coast City fade because his 24 hour power ring charge has finished. A Guardian of the Universe appears and asks him to come to Oa at once for disciplany action over transgressing a Green Lantern rule: using his power ring for personal gain.

Hal exclaims it is about personal loss and ends up destroying the head of the construct. With a mad grin on his face, Hal intends to go to Oa. What follows in the following issue, is a complete decimation of the Green Lantern Corps by Hal Jordan. Hal’s battles are bloody, vicious and to the death!

GREEN LANTERN BESTS SINESTRO IN MORTAL COMBAT, KILLS THE GUARDIANS OF THE UNIVERSE AND BECOMES… PARALLAX

In ‘Green Lantern’ (1994) #50, Hal Jordan arrives on Oa and grieved over the destruction of Coast City, gives into the darkness. He is greeted by Sinestro who has been freed from the Central Power Battery to battle him as a last line of defense. Hal has stolen the power rings of the Green Lanterns he has killed and agrees to use only one power ring in order to make the fight fair. The fight commences. Both combatants are evenly matched. However, in one final blast, there is an explosion and both combatants’ costumes are tattered.

The fight turns into a fist fight and Hal soon has the upper hand. Finally, Sinestro seems to surrender by saying “Wuh-We’re… Fuh- Finished, all right…”2 At that moment, Hal takes Sinestro into a bear hug and snaps his neck. Then, Hal walks dramatically towards the Central Power Battery. Suddenly, he is punched by Kilowog. However, he responds by incinerating Kilowog with a blast. Then, after an argument over his rampage and the destruction of Coast City with the Guardians, Hal begins to absorb its energy. It is at this time that the Parallax entity is freed and is bonded to Hal’s soul. Parallax emerges and kills all the Guardians of the Universe save Ganthet.

In ‘Venom’ (2018) #4, the dark Elder god Knull in Knowhere tells Eddie Brock about the origin of the Venom symbiote, the Klyntar.

The story begins with the Elder god Knull “in the beginning” being invaded in his dimension by the Celestials.1 Seeing it as a war between light and darkness, Knull summons a sword out of the Abyss and decapitates a Celestial.

Then, using its remains, he forges the necrosword, the beginning of the symbiote. He sets out to attack the night and is then repelled onto a desolate, abandoned planet. Then, Knull creates the symbiote on the planet by bonding his abyss with lesser creatures. Eventually, Knull raises an army to slay gods across the galaxy until they reach Earth.

The Grendel, which is a dragon sent by Knull to slay worlds, reach Earth and are slayed by Thor’s lightning bolt. The bond between Knull and his army is broken across the galaxy and the symbiotes become infected by “venom”.1 They become the Klyntar and rise up against Knull who is consumed by the darkness.

In ‘Venom: Dark Origin #4’, the symbiote tells Eddie Brock his origin story. He remembers 60,000 light-years away and being born on the nameless desolate planet. There, Venom protects a rodentoid alien by transforming it into an apex predator.

VENOM HAS HAD TWELVE HUMAN HOSTS

Venom has had twelve human hosts. In Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #3, Venom’s first human host was Deadpool on Battleworld. Deadpool wore the symbiote moments before Spider-Man would come to use it to repair his damaged costume. Deadpool realized the symbiote had bonded and was interfacing with his mind. Fearing that his insanity would affect the symbiote, he returned it to its prison.

Another notable host of the symbiote has been Flash Thompson. In ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ (2011) #654, Flash Thompson became Venom after he was enlisted onto Project: Rebirth 2.0. Flash was bonded to the symbiote acquired after the Siege of Asgard. Once bonded, Flash was able to regenerate his legs and had powers similar to Spider-Man’s.

VENOM IS BORN!

In ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ (1988) #300, Daily Globe journalist Eddie Brock publishes about the Sin-Eater. Suffering from adrenal cancer with a few months to live, journalist Eddie Brock wanted to break out a story for the Daily Globe. He was contacted by Emil Gregg who claimed to be the Sin-Eater. He began publishing front-page exclusives protecting the Sin-Eater’s identity under the First Amendment until pressure from the police and his editor forced him to reveal the Sin-Eater as Emil Gregg. From that time, Eddie was filled with hate for Spider-Man.

Unfortunately for Eddie, that same day, Spider-Man and Daredevil captured the real Sin-Eater and revealed his identity to be Detective Stan Carter. He was fired from the Globe, his wife Anne left him and his father disowned him. Seeking redemption, he headed to Our Lady Of Saints Church to beg forgiveness from God and commit suicide. Once inside, he was attacked by the alien symbiote and bonded to it. The symbiote bonded to Eddie mentally and physically and revealed that he had posed as Spider-Man’s costume, but that Spider-Man had attempted to kill it using the church’s bell tower. Eddie’s despair, rage and fierce hate for Spider-Man fed the symbiote. Venom was born!
