IN READING GUIDES, LISTS, REVIEWS

In the Wildstorm universe, the WildC.A.T.s. are the Earth’s original super-team. Previously, assembled as Team One, they have gone through multiple incarnations. In their different versions, two members have remained providing the team leadership in times of crisis: Spartan and Mister Majestic.

Let’s list five reasons why Mister Majestic is the team’s natural leader and five reasons why Spartan is their original leader.

10. JOHN COLT LED THE ORIGINAL TEAM ONE

In Team One: WildC.A.T.s. (1995), the U.S. government recruits John Colt, Mister Majestic, Regiment, Mason, Think Tank, Isaiah King and Slay as Team One. Their objective is to fight Daemonites as Unidentified Life-Forms (ULFs). During their first mission, Colt leads an untrained Team One against Helspont and his cult. Disastrously, they fail to stop the launch of a missile silo on New York City. Though Colt failed in his leadership, he remained the team’s leader when WildC.A.T.s. assembled.

9. ORIGINALLY, MISTER MAJESTIC WAS A NOBLE WARRIOR

In Team One: WildC.A.T.s. (1995), the U.S. government recruits Kherubim warriors Mister Majestic and John Colt, who would be resurrected after his death as Spartan. Originally, the government recruits Mister Majestic because he is a superhero. As a noble Kherubim warrior he believes in helping people and saving lives. Though he is also a warrior who lives by a code.

8. SPARTAN BECAME THE LEADER OF THE WILDC.A.T.s.

When the Kherubim-Daemonite war erupted, Spartan assembled the WildC.A.T.s. In WildC.A.T.s.: Covert Action Teams (1992) #1, Spartan led the team in an explosive issue against the Cabal. As a synthoid created from John Colt, Spartan was the team’s logical choice to lead on covert missions. Though he continued to doubt his legitimacy over his android nature.

7. MISTER MAJESTIC HELPS FAMILY AND FRIENDS

In WildC.A.T.s: Covert Action Teams (1994) #11, Savant recruits Mister Majestic to the WildC.A.T.s. When the team is attacked by Troika, Savant travels to the Arctic. There, at Mister Majestic’s energy barrier, she asks to meet him to help Zealot. In order to help his friend Zealot and his daughter Savant, Mister Majestic joins the team after some hesitation about his past failures.

6. SPARTAN’S PAST ROMANCES CONFLICT HIM

Because Spartan has gone through multiple upgrades, he has trouble understanding human emotion. In Gang War, the original WildC.A.T.s. return to Earth. There, they find that Mister Majestic has become the Earth-team’s leader. Also, Spartan has to deal with his identity and finding out who he really is.

5. MISTER MAJESTIC FOLLOWS A WARRIOR CODE

In Gang War, Mister Majestic emerges as the team’s leader. At the start of WildC.A.T.s: Covert Action Teams #28, Spartan refuses to accompany Ladytron and Condition Red to the local bar. In fact, we learn his warrior code prevents him from engaging in sexual activity. In World’s End, we see that circumstances can allow him to seek companionship in order to continue the Kheran race.

4. SPARTAN’S BIO-ANDROID BODY IS MORE INTELLIGENT

Certainly, as a synthoid, Spartan possesses a highly advanced bio-android body. Among his many abilities is technopathy. In WildC.A.T.s: Covert Action Teams #6, Spartan is able to use his android mind to reconstruct a fight from heat signatures left by the combatants. Later, he uses repurposed tehnology to invent HALO cars that run on infinite battery. Visit  Wildstorm Universe ’97 (1996) #1 for the source book file on his powers.

ADVERTISE YOUR AUCTION

3. MISTER MAJESTIC IS MORE POWERFUL

Powerfully, Mister Majestic is the WildC.A.T.s.’ most powerful member. Indeed, he has tussled with Captain Atom, Helspont and even Electric Blue Superman. In Gang War, the poster boy incinerates Kaizen and Tao with his eyebeams with a kill count of two villIains and six zombots.

2. SPARTAN USES LETHAL VIOLENCE AS THE LAST RESORT

Perhaps, one of Spartan’s greatest quality is his logical mind and his ability to debate difficult questions. In Captain Atom: Armageddon, the WildC.A.T.s. and the Authority debate over whether to kill Captain Atom. Since he comes from a parallel universe, their computer simulations have determined that his nuclear powers can start a chain reaction that will destroy the Wildstorm universe. But Spartan cautions the Authority over taking any lethal action without additional information.

1. MISTER MAJESTIC SOLVES CRISES

Really, Mister Majestic is the WildC.A.T.s.’ natural leader. When Captain Atom arrived in the Wildstorm universe, he looked to Mister Majestic for help and understanding. In the last issue, Mister Majestic may not have saved the universe, but his timely arrival on the Carrier saved Captain Atom from the Authority.

IN RELIGIOUS WARFARE

UNTRUSTING OF SUPERHUMANS, MAX FARADAY CAUSES THE RAPTURE

In the Wildstorm Universe, World’s End occurs after Armageddon. Due to the Reaper’s nuclear holocaust, the God-like Max Faraday intervenes. To this end, he causes the Rapture of billions of people from Earth. In reality, he teleports the survivors to St. Louis. There, their routine continues as they are unaware of Armageddon.

At St. Louis, Max is meeting with the WildC.A.T.s and Team 7. Sternly, he blames the disaster on superheroes. Too often, he says, their interference lead to greater threats. For his part, Max plans to remain neutral in the war till all superhumans are erased. When Max senses danger in the South Pacific, he realizes he must intervene.

WITH A REALITY-WARPING CLASH, TAO STEALS MAX’S GODHOOD

In the South Pacific, the terrorist named Tao has threatened Susanna Chaste, Max’s wife. In the nick of time, Max, the WildC.A.T.s and Team 7 teleport on the scene. There, they face Tao and his men. Arduously, the battle rages. Using their reality-warping powers, Max and Tao are matched. Then, Zealot and Kenesha teleport to Hawaii.

There, they enlist Majestic’s help. With the Nemesis Swords – forged in the fires of Creation – Mister Majestic turns the tides. Violently, he pierces Tao’s body. Brutally, Tao is defeated but he has an ace. Before he can be executed, Pit Bull and a goon are holding Max’s wife at gun point. Desperately, Max agrees to reveal the Creation Equation to Tao in order to save her. Dangerously, Tao steals Max’s godhood.

HAVING DIVIDED HIS POWER, MAX AND THE HEROES TRIUMPH

Later, the battle shifts to the Hollow Realm. Here, is the source of Creation. At the Hollow Realm, Tao plans to destroy then re-make the universe. First, he has locked the god-like heroes in prisons of their failed loves. Eventually, Void and Susanna Chaste free themselves. Soon, they confront Tao. In battle, the truth of Tao’s origin emerges. Originally, a test tube baby, he was grown and studied as an experiment. As a result, he grew without love.

Soon, the other heroes emerge. In fact, they tempt Tao with one attempt: to fix himself. Suddenly, Grifter appears and shoots Tao in the head. Then, the villain disappears but does not come back. Soon, Max and the heroes regain their near-full powers. With his faith in superheroes restored, Max tasks them to re-build Earth. In the meantime, he plan on transporting the survivors with Void’s help to the hollow realm. In one final act, Max restores the heroes’ 90s costumes with some alterations.

THE JLA ARE BATTLING EPOCH ACROSS TIME WITH HIS CHRONO-CUBE

In ‘JLA/WildC.A.T.s.’ (1997), the JLA and WildC.A.T.s. crossover for the first time. The issue begins with Kid Flash – Wally West, who is to become the Flash – meeting Epoch for the first time. Kid Flash attempts to combust Epoch’s feet by vibrating the air molecules with his fingers. However, Epoch’s armor is 41st century technology.

When Epoch is about to kill Kid Flash, the JLA shows up. Flash wrests all the projectiles at superspeed. Epoch comments that the team has taken control of his Chrono-Cube. Claiming to be a 4D man, Epoch reaches billions of years into the future, and hits Superman with red solar energy. Being a being of pure energy now, Superman survives the attack unscathed. Epoch disappears vowing to destroy the superheroes’ ancestors in the past.

In 'JLA/WildC.A.T.s.' (1997), in 65,000,000 B.C., Epoch encounters a soliton that enhances his suit and allows him to use the Chrono Cube as a power source.

The JLA battle Epoch across the timestream. In 14,000 B.C., Green Lantern saves a distant relative from Epoch. When Flash attempts to reach him, Epoch says his advanced technology makes him slow down to a crawl. In 65,000,000 B.C., at the time of the dinosaurs’ extinction, Epoch encounters a soliton that enhances his armor and enables him to steal the Chrono-Cube as power source.

The JLA end up in 33 AD. Meanwhile, Superman and Green Lantern scan the Earth for the power source and discover it buried in limestone. Then, the JLA activate the drive mechanism with Green Lantern’s power ring focusing all their willpower. They end up transported to the Wildstorm Universe.

TEAM-UP OF THE ’90s DECADE: JLA/WILDC.A.T.s. vs THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS

Eventually, Superman and Mister Majestic are able to settle their differences. The JLA/WildC.A.T.s. teams-up to dispatch the Seven Deadly Sins that had been destroying the Wildstorm Universe. During the battle, Mister Majestic agrees with Void to help return the Justice League home otherwise both universes will be destroyed.

Void takes Green Lantern into voidspace. There, she determines Epoch’s dark nova cracked time “into two parallel waves; two separate histories were created.”1 Void explains the JLA’s technology brought them to the wrong time: to the WildC.A.T.s.’ 1997. In order for the entities in voidspace to help, Green Lantern must teach them how to create light constructs. Using her technology, Void is able “to punch a hole through voidspace. A bridge.”1

IN A FINAL BATTLE, THE JLA AND WILDC.A.T.s. TAKE DOWN EPOCH’S OMEGA ATTRACTOR WITH THE CHRONO-CUBE

The JLA and WildC.A.T.s. travel back to the DC Universe. There, the JLA find out they have been away for five days. The heroes find Epoch has merged with the Omega Attractor, a living computer and bomb from the 68th century. With the Omega Attractor, Epoch has access to weapons across centuries. He uses it to deploy weapons to enslave the world and imprison superheroes on the moon. His plan is to turn Earth “into a vast time-traveling time engine powered by its human slave population.”

The JLA and WildC.A.T.s. team-up to take down Epoch’s citadel. Superman tells Maul his plan. He tells Maul to grow large enough to take down the citadel. In fact, to account for Maul’s mindlessness, a burst of electricity to the right motor neurons should return Maul to his normal size within 30 seconds. Maul succeeds. Since the WildC.A.T.s. are not in Epoch’s database, Superman sends them to take him down. Meanwhile, the JLA are working on the Chrono-Cube. Eventually, Epoch is defeated. The JLA program the Chrono-Cube to create a temporal prison cell around Epoch. Finally, the WildC.A.T.s. return home.

In 'JLA/WildC.A.T.s.' (1997), Maul destroys Epoch's citadel in 30 seconds.

IN ADVANCED WARFARE

DURING “GANG WAR”, MISTER MAJESTIC LEADS THE WILDC.A.T.s. STRANDED ON EARTH

In “WildC.A.T.s: Gang War”, the space WildC.A.T.s. team is returning from their homeworld Khera, while Mister Majestic leads the WildC.A.T.s. on Earth. Mister Majestic must lead an inexperienced team against supervillain gangs in New York City. The WildC.A.T.s. team consists of: Mister Majestic, Tao, Savant, Ladytron and Condition Red. Issue #28 starts with the WildC.A.T.s.’ war on crime on the streets of New York.

Mister Majestic sees it as the beginning of a disaster. Mister Majestic harbors more lethal methods and incinerates the Zombots with his eye-beams. Ladytron (Maxine) and Condition Red (Max) then decide to go to Max’s local superhero bar called Clark’s Bar. Ladytron sees it as a date though Condition Red disagrees. At the bar, Max notices Vic Lazarr, a supervillain, has deposited a suitcase in the gentleman’s room. Before he can disarm it, it blows up the bar. Max ends up at the hospital.

MISTER MAJESTIC KILL COUNT: 6 ZOMBOTS.

BACK FROM THE “WILDSTORM RISING,” THE WILDC.A.T.s. ARE QUITTING

At the end of “Wildstorm Rising,” the WildC.A.T.s. flew a Daemonite ship into space in order to stop from exploding. Believing them dead, Mister Majestic and Savant set up a new team. They were transported on Khera where they found the Kherubims had won the Kherubim/Daemonite war. Deeply dissatisfied with Khera’s political affairs, they returned for Earth. In ‘WildC.A.T.s: Covert Actions Teams’ (1997) #29, returning to Earth, Mister Majestic attempted to recruit the members onto his team to fight the gang war, which had also recruited Team One. However, the WildC.A.T.s. original team declined and departed for Gamorra to aid Grifter.

The team consisted of Spartan, Void, Maul, Warblade and Zealot. Two members, Emp and Voodoo, quit the team. A day later, Ladytron checks on Condition Red, but she finds out from the doctor that Condition Red checked himself out of the hospital and quit the team. On Gamorra, the WildC.A.T.s. is under heavy fire. As Spartan manages the controls, they notice an armed troop carrier with the Stormwatch insignia and realize the U.N. has been called in. As they repel the boarders, their craft crashes lower and lower into the ocean. On the shore, Hunter-Killey Daimyo reports to Kaizen Gamorra that his enemies have been downed. Then Void teleports the WildC.A.T.s. on the island.

REUNITED, THE WILDC.A.T.s. ARE ON THE HUNT FOR TAO AT HALO CORPORATIONS

The gang war continues in issues #31-34. In ‘WildC.A.T.s: Covert Action Teams’ (1996) #31, the gang war is all-out and the supervillains have abducted hostages in New York in order to make an ultimatum on the WildC.A.T.s. After Spartan reminds Zealot about his life with her as John Colt, declares his love for her and shares a kiss with her. Then, it is an all-out assault on the Mercs, Overtkill and the supervillain hostage Vic Lazarr.

In WildC.A.T.s: Covert Action Teams’ (1997) #32, during an exchange of fire, Grifter learns that Deathtrap wasn’t responsible for the attack on Clark’s Bar. Ladytron spots Vic Lazarr and goes in pursuit. After interrogating Lazarr, the heroes and villains realize they have been duped. Mister Majestic realizes the one responsible is Tao. His plan was to orchestrate surgical attacks on New York’s underworld, the attack on H.A.R.M.’s funeral in order to bring everyone under his command. Clark’s Bar’s bombing was meant to escalate the gang war between the WildC.A.T.s. and the criminal underworld.

IN CRISES

‘DIVINE RIGHT’ (1997)

In 1997, Jim Lee published a ground-breaking comic called ‘Divine Right: The Adventures Of Max Faraday’ (1997). Let’s read the summary on the twelve-issue comic:

This is where we meet Max Faraday; 20-year-old computer science major, lovable loser, at home, with older friend Devan Lawless; bored, Dev logged into Icore using his old professor’s access codes. Something starts downloading: a binary code string. Max views it all (barring one file, which he forwarded to his cyber-girlfriend, Susanna Chaste), when the computer blows up as a result of channelling the Equation.

Seemingly fine, Max and Dev head out, only to be pursued by strange creatures, bringing about the first manifestations of his power, and the first meeting with The Fallen, his protectors and mentors. The Fallen are BrandeTobrukand Exotica; a trio of super-powered beings who have a fraction of Max’s power which bonds them to him.

Hunted for this power he now wields, he is helped notably by The Fallen, Christy Blaze, John Lynch (Gen¹³‘s mentor) and Caitlin Fairchild, the peer leader of Gen¹³.

WORLD’S END

Max Faraday faced the next crisis called Armageddon. Faced with nuclear annihilation, Max raptured billions of people before relocating the survivors to a preserved St. Louis. Max was discouraged at superheroes and felt the crisis was a negative consequence of their actions. Max and his family then secluded themselves on a tropical island in the South Pacific.

When the terrorist organization known as Tao located Max and his family, Max’s wife Susanna was abducted by Pit Bull. He was forced to reveal the Creation Equation to Tao and ended up losing his powers. Protected and saved by the WildC.A.T.s., Max regained his confidence in superheroes and regained his divine powers. Max then relocated to the Hollow Realm with the survivors and Void.

IN CRISES

THE KHERUBIM/DAEMONITE WAR

You may have seen the TV show in the ’90s: Spartan, Grifter, Zealot, Warblade and Co. participate in a war between two alien races. In Season 1 Episode 6, Majestyk awakens from a stasis pod. He immediately assumes command of the WildC.A.T.s. to Spartan’s reluctance. He intends to oppose Helspont who seeks an orb that can conquer the universe.

VOLUME 1 COLLECTS THE KHERUBIM/DAEMONITE WAR

Volume 1 collects the Kherubim/Daemonite war. Volume 1 collects the following issues:

  • WildC.A.T.S Covert Action Teams – Collects # 1-4
  • A Gathering of Eagles – Collects # 10-13
  • Homecoming – Collects # 21-27
  • Gang War – Collects # 28-34

Despite being an Image series, the series suffered from frequent delays. After September, the frequency would decrease and it would take at least two years in order to get on a monthly schedule.

The Alan Moore run suffered from the lack of a consistent artist and missed deadlines. Though it added some significant contribution to the mythos.

THE KHERUBIM

The Kherubim are human in appearance though they are stronger, more durable and virtually immortal. The downside is that Kheran are almost infertile and rarely produce offspring. However, Kheran do have the ability to produce offspring with other species, such as the existence of Kheran/human hybrids. Some Kheran are known are Lords and are more powerful, with abilities to manipulate energy and other psionic abilities.

Shapers are a subspecies of Kherans. They are shapeshifters and they are able to change their bodies into a mercury-like substance. The Titans are part of Kherubim society and are purple in appearance. They can increase or decrease their mass. They have large yellow horns on their backs. When they change their mass, they lose intelligence.

THE DAEMONITES

The Daemonites are reptilians from the planet Daemon that are capable of possessing host bodies. Daemonites need to possess someone in order to survive on a planet other than their native planet such as Earth. When a Daemonite possesses someone he has access to all the abilities the host has.

The Daemonite can change the host into its Daemonite form for a short period of time. Daemonites are near immortal. They have the ability to regenerate from injuries. The Daemonites are often drawn with sharp claws, sharp teeth and hunched. Though Daemonite Lords like Helspont look different.

Millennia ago the Kherans came into contact with the Daemonites and a war erupted between both species. This war would last several centuries. A small group of Kherans and Daemonites would crashland on Earth and would inspire humanity with tales of gods, angels, demons and monsters. Their conflict would continue till the end of the 20th century, while in space the Kherans would go on to defeat the Daemonites. Kherans imposed heavy indemnities on the Daemonites and their society went bankrupt trying to pay them off. Khera allowed Daemonites to migrate to the more prosperous planet, but all Daemonites on Khera had to live in ghettos.

IN ADVANCED WARFARE

INTRO

You may have seen the TV show in the ’90s: Spartan, Grifter, Zealot, Warblade and Co. participate in a war between two alien races. The show was successful though it ended after Season 1. WILDC.A.T.s. was even made in a Super Nintendo video game.

‘W.I.L.D.C.A.T.s.’ (1992) #1 SHOOK THE COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY

Wildstorm was the dream of two childhood friends, artist Jim Lee and writer Brandon Choi. Early on, Lee worked for Marvel on projects like “Punisher War Journal” and “Uncanny X-Men.” His art got him notoriety and recognition.

Eventually, Lee quit Marvel and originally set up Homage Studio which would become “Wildstorm.” Then, Lee recruited his childhood friend, Brandon Choi and they would release their first comic “WildC.A.T’s: Covert Action Teams #1.”

WHO ARE THE W.I.L.D.C.A.T.s.?

Lee and Choi imagined the WildC.A.T.s. as a different brand of superheroes. The premise of the first issue was the millennial war between two alien races: the Kherubim and the Daemonites. Unfortunately, the war was transported to Earth and both races formed teams and organizations in order to eliminate each other.

The leader of the team was a Kherubim synthoid named Spartan. He recruited other Kherubim warriors such as Lord Emp, the Coda Warrior Zealot, the Kherubim Half Breed Maul, and Warblade who could change his body into weapons.

We are introduced to the concept of the Kherubim and Daemonites, two ancient alien races who have been at war for millennium and brought that war to earth thousands of years before. The Kherubim were immortal, very powerful, and human in appearance who breed with humans over the years creating super powered beings known as half-breeds in the process. The Daemonites are body snatchers by nature and inhabit key beings of power, such as their current leader Helspont who inhabits a powerful alien body. So by 1992 these two races had used Earth as a battleground and the war was ramping back up again.

VOLUME I

The first issues involved the WildC.A.T.s. fighting the threat of the Cabal. Four issues in, the WildC.A.T.s. had to face Rob Liefield’s Youngblood over the Daemonites having taken control of Vice President Dan Quayle. A modified Youngblood team took on Supreme in ‘Supreme’ (1992) #1.

The first crossover of the series was with Mark Silvestri’s “Cyber Force.” Two important characters were going to be introduced during Chris Claremont’s “the Gathering of Eagles”, who were Mister Majestic, the Superman analog, and Savant, Zealot’s sister. Alan Moore would take over the growing “Wildstorm” universe with issue #21.

In 'W.I.L.D.C.A.T.s.' (1994) #7, the W.I.L.D.C.A.T.s. meet Cyberforce for the first time.

ALAN MOORE TAKES OVER ‘WILDC.A.T.s.’ IN VOLUME I

In the ’90s, though he was sought after, comic writer Alan Moore refused to work for DC and Marvel and remained secretive. Instead, he decided to work for growing comic companies and small-scale projects.

He found his way to Liefeld’s Extreme Studios to work on Supreme and Youngblood but also released the still unfinished 1963 through Image. Moore’s run on WildC.A.T’s could have been one of the most satisfying super hero stories I’ve ever read but was marred by replacement artist after replacement artist.

-“The WildCats: From The Beginning To The Wildstorm,” TC

In the “Homecoming” storyline, the WildC.A.T.s. are stranded on Khera while Mister Majestic and Savant are on Earth and believe them dead. During the run, Mister Majestic becomes the leader of the WildC.A.T.s. on Earth.
