THE BEST TECHNOPATHS IN ANIME
For our very first Anime/Manga article, we compared Goku and One-Punch Man. For dedicated fans, who have been following the media, manga and anime produce some of the most gravity-defying and exhilarating fights in all fandom.
In today’s article, we compare two trainers that are the cream of the crop in terms of fighting spirit, determination, strength and yes… taming!
Though both universes have never met, what would happen in a battle between the greatest pokémon master, Ash Ketchum and the Legendary Hero, Taichi “Tai” Kamiya?
Really, both are A-list heroes in their respective universes. Namely, the iconic Ash recently concluded his training in the Pokémon: Ultimate Journeys: The Series (2023) anime. For his part, the teenage Tai has finisheded his journey in Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning (2023).
Though both heroes have shown powerful monsters, let’s compare their training in terms of evolution. Hence, we compare Team Ash with Raichu vs Team Tai with MetalGreyMon.
KI AND POWER LEVELS
Generally, the concept of power levels understood scientifically or physically is not useful in anime and manga. In fact, this is due to the concept of ki.
In anime and manga, characters’ strengths are not dependent on how much physical strength they can exert, or how much they can lift. Instead, they depend on their ability to use their natural life force for devastating attacks, super speed or abilities such as flying.
In many respects, these are an application of martial arts and Chinese philosophies to the arts of fighting and war. For these reasons, we compare these warriors in terms of formidability.
FORMIDABILITY
Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy.
For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Level. For example, this explains why Batman is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful.
Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.
Before we rank our two heroes, let’s list some rules.
- First, the hero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
- In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
- Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
- Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.
First, we will compare them in Class, Weaknesses, Quality Opponents and Limitations. Then, let’s rank Team Ash with Raichu vs Team Tai with MetalGreyMon in Formidability. To note, all scores are rated out of a 100.

1. STRENGTH CLASS
Generally, Ash is the greatest trainer in pokémon. On many occasions, he has bonded with his animal to win matches and even evolve. Importantly, pikachu evolves into Raichu as his final form.
At the same time, its power can be measured directly in terms of voltage. Certainly, Raichu can deliver powerful blasts of lightning, can ground its electricity with its tail, even glow with an electric field in the dark and ride psychic waves.
With his Z-move, he can approximate the power of a lightningbolt with 100,000 volts of kinetic energy for a Building-Level of Energy Projection. For more information on our Power Level Scale, visit the Power Level Wiki.
On the other hand, Tai rates as more experienced and older. In most of his fights, Tai leads teams of trainers against invasions from the Digiworld. In fact, Greymon is his faithful digimon which has countless evolutions.
However, in Digimon World Tour, Pt. 2, we see Team Tai fight “The Mamemon Brothers” in Paris. And we see Greymon digivolve into MetalGreymon. During the battle, he fires his Giga Blaster which launches two missiles.
And when both Digi teams unleash their devastating attacks, it is the entire monument that is destroyed. With a near square kilometer of blast wave, MetalGreymon’s strength is definitely at least City Block-Level.
ADVANTAGE: TEAM TAI
2. WEAKNESSES
For the most part, Team Ash’s main weakness has been its inexperience and unwillingness to evolve pikachu. Indeed, the bond between Ash and his pokemon is strong and they come to each other’s defense in matches.
Since, in order to win matches, Ash must capture pokemon, train them and evolve them, the evolution into Raichu is significant. Really, Ash is the greatest master with friendship as his greatest strength.
Generally, Tai’s main weakness is his conflict with other trainers in his leadership and his need to bond with a machine. Though Tai helps Greymon digivolve into multiple forms, he may lack real human friendship.
With more digivolution Team Tai may be the better trainer, but Team Ash’s dynamic duo has a powerful friendship that makes Ash the greatest trainer.
Overall, both fighters seem about even in terms of Weaknesses though Team Ash overcome their Advanced Weaponry with discipline and friendship.
ADVANTAGE: TEAM ASH

3. QUALITY OPPONENTS
Perhaps, the most clear area to consider. Ash’s most dangerous foes tend to be either other trainers like Akuma or criminal masterminds eco-terrorists like Team Rocket. At the same time, Pikachu has lost consciousness in his battles such as when he experienced the Hyper-Beam of a Raichu for the first time.
Though their physical strength is often around Peak Human, their Power Level with technology and pokemon or ki tends to be around City Block-Level to Multi-City Block Level. In terms of Power Level, Ash’s strongest opponents are around Criminal Mastermind or Hi-Tech Genius.
In comparison, Digimon copies the original but with the fear of AI, the Y2K bug and alien invasion. On multiple occasions, the Digiworld invades the Real-World and the Digidestined must stop them.
And the Digimon face more life-and-death and destruction. With powerful attacks, they are in danger of being deleted from the DigiWorld. In terms of Quality Opponents, Greymon digivolves into MetalGreymon in order to stop an Ultimate Digimon.
Overall, Team Tai faces Planetary threats and alien invasions to fight higher Quality Opponents at the Monster-Level.
ADVANTAGE: TEAM TAI
4. LIMITATIONS
Really, both teams are astoundingly powerful and strong. Though Team Ash seems to have unlimited potential for evolution with better friendship, Team Tai has shown devastating power against Ultimate Digimon.
Though, both trainers even each other out in terms of weakness and experience, the fans decide which style they prefer to train their pets.
ADVANTAGE: TIE
FORMIDABILITY SCORES
VERDICT:
Though Team Ash has unlimited potential and better friendship, Team Tai has more experience and digivolution. In the end, to evaluate trainers, we think they become best friends to learn how to train their pets.
