IN UNIVERSAL AND MULTIVERSAL ANOMALIES

“SECRET WARS” REBOOTED THE MARVEL MULTIVERSE

In “Secret Wars” (2015), the Marvel multiverse is being destroyed by the multiversal entities known as the Beyonders. Only two remaining universes remain: the main Marvel universe and the Ultimate universe. In the Beyond, Doctor Doom meets with the Beyonders in order to save the remaining universes. Originlly, Molecule Man was designed by the Beyonders as a bomb that would destroy the multiverse. Using Molecule Men as bombs, Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange killed the Beyonders and stole their power.

During the incursions between Earth-616 and Earth-1610, Mister Fantastic built the Future Foundation Life Rafts to transport the survivors to the incursion points. Suffering a hull breach, they nevertheless survived and were transported to Battleworld, created by Doctor Doom. On Battleworld, Doctor Doom was worshipped as God on a world of controlled chaos. There, the Life Raft and the Cabal opposed Doom’s reign. In the end, Doom was defeated and Molecule Man destroyed Battleworld, rebooting the mainstream Marvel universe. In the end, the Ultimate universe was no more.

MILES MORALES JOINED THE MAINSTREAM MARVEL UNIVERSE

In ‘Secret Wars’ (2015) #6, the Maker’s and Reed Richards plans are set into motion. Miles Morales and Spider-Man go off to the White Room to find Doom’s source of power. There, in front of Molecule Man’s statue, they find Valeria, Doctor Doom’s daughter on Battleworld but who is actually Reed Richards’ daughter. After a brief discussion with her, the two Spider-Men enter the white room. Inside, they find Molecule Man there who asks them if they brought him something to eat. Surprisingly, Miles Morales takes out a three week-old hamburger from his pocket and gives it to Molecule Man.

Fully fed, Spider-Man asks Molecule Man about Doctor Doom’s power source. Molecule Man tells them they are looking at him. In ‘Secret Wars’ (2016) #9, Miles Morales has a flashback to that moment. In the white room, Molecule Man thanks him for the burger. It is implied that Molecule Man saved Miles Morales and his family in the new mainstream Marvel universe. In the present, the two Spider-Men are on a rooftop and after Peter checks if Miles has done his homework, the two Spider-Men swing into adventure to go beat up on bad guys.

VENOM WARNS THE MAKER SEEKS TO RE-CREATE THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE

In ‘Venom’ (2021) #200, the Ultimate universe resurfaces. Now, Eddie Brock has become the new King in Black and is testing his super powers. After testing his omniscience, he notes the only one escaping his power is the Maker, Reed Richards’ evil counterpart from the Ultimate universe. Having obtained an artificial symbiote from the Ultimate universe, the Maker used Venom‘s symbiote to augment and heal his psyche.

Able to travel between dimensions, the Maker returned to the Ultimate universe, which was destroyed. Then, Eddie uses his super powers to meet simultaneously the Avengers, Quiet Council of Krakoa, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Silver Surfer and other groups to warn them tat the Maker will likely return to conquer Earth-616. In fact, this task has been commissioned him by the Interdimensional Council of Reeds. In all likelihood, it is possible the Ultimate universe was rebooted after “Secret Wars.”

STAN LEE’S FAVORITE VILLAIN

Doctor Doom was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Originally, the character first appeared in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 (1962) #5.

Interviewed by leukemia survivor KJ Ricci, Stan Lee revealed Doctor Doom is his favorite supervillain. The legendary writer said he does not see Doom as a villain and would like to clear his name.

RESPECT DOCTOR DOOM!

DESTINED TO RULE THE WORLD

In “Doomwar”, Doctor Doom manages to steal the Vibranium from T’Challa’s Vibranium Vault. Before he can claim what his heart truly seeks, Doctor Doom must pass a test. He must prove to the god Bast that he is truly pure of heart. Uncannily, Doctor Doom does pass the test.

Doctor Doom opens his soul and shows Bast he has faith. With his sorcery, he has peered into millions of possible futures and has seen that the only future where humanity is at peace, is Doomworld. Perhaps, Doctor Doom is pure evil.

SORCERER SUPREME CONTENDER

Few beings on Marvel Earth are equally adept at science and magic. Using sorcery and tech, Doctor Doom lives in both world. A super-genius, Doctor Doom once contended for the title of Sorcerer Supreme against Doctor Strange.

In ‘Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph & Torment’, Genghis tests the most powerful sorcerers on Earth for the title of Sorcerer Supreme. In the trial, it comes down to a final showdown between Doom and Strange. Ultimately, Doctor Doom fails the trial and only for Doctor Strange to use his astral form free Genghis’ spirit from his crystal and to be declared Sorcerer Supreme.

SUPREME BEING OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

In ‘Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars’ (1985) #10, Doctor Doom stole Galactus’ and Taa II’s power in order to battle Beyonder. In the Beyonder’s Realm, it was a hopeless battle. Finally, Doctor Doom was defeated.

Miraculously, in a contest of willlpower, Doom resisted the Beyonder’s dissection, overpowered him, and stole his power. For a short while, Doctor Doom became the Supreme Being of the Marvel Universe.

MOLECULE MAN (OWEN REECE)
EARTH-616

In ‘Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars’ (1984) #4, titled “Situation Hopeless”, Molecule Man performs an energy projection feat. The villains have attacked and destroyed the heroes’ base. As the heroes are in retreat, Molecule Man drops a 150-billion ton mountain on the heroes, seemingly killing them.

How much energy projection does it take for Molecule Man to drop a 150-billion ton mountain on the heroes with molecular manipulation?

MOLECULE MAN LIFTED, TRANSPORTED, HOVERED 100 MILE HIGH AND DROPPED A 150-BILLION TON MOUNTAIN ON THE HEROES.

MOLECULE MAN GENERATED 7.5*10^21 JOULES OF KINETIC ENERGY AT 10000 METERS PER SECOND AND 2.3681438*10^20 JOULES OF POTENTIAL ENERGY 100 MILES ABOVE THE GROUND.

MOLECULE MAN GENERATED 7.7368144*10^21 JOULES OF TOTAL ENERGY, 18 TIMES THE ENERGY RECEIVED BY EARTH FROM THE SUN, ENOUGH TO DESTROY A SMALL COUNTRY.

Doctor Doom and the villains have destroyed the heroes’ base. As the heroes retreat, Molecule Man drops a mountain on them, seemingly killing them.

We will use the formula for potential energy in order to calculate Molecule Man’s energy projection.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

The calculations involve calculating how much energy projection it would take to remove the mountain off the ground, and how much it would take to drop the mountain on the heroes. Calculating a lift force for a mountain would be complex. For the interest of simplicity, we will only calculate the kinetic energy for transporting the mountain across 10 km and the potential energy before dropping it on the heroes.

KE = 1/2mv^2 = (1/2)(150*10^12 kg)(10^8 m/s) = 7.5*10^21 J.

PE = mgh = (150*10^12 kg)(9.81 m/s^2)(160934 m) = 2.3681438*10^20 J.

Total Energy = 7.7368144*10^21 J.

ENERGY PROJECTION

Molecule Man lifted a mountain, transported it across Battleworld within moments, hovered it 100 miles above the heroes and dropped it on them.

Molecule Man generated 7.7368144*10^21 Joules of energy. Assuming Battleworld is roughly the size of Earth, Molecule Man had to generate a Planetary Level of Energy Projection.

Toggle the Toggle Arrow below to view the calculations.

Calculations for Molecule Man, ‘Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars’ #4

KE = 1/2mv^2 = (1/2)(150*10^12 kg)(10^8 m/s) = 7.5*10^21 J.
PE = mgh = (150*10^12 kg)(9.81 m/s^2)(160934 m) = 2.3681438*10^20 J.
Total Energy = 7.7368144*10^21 J.
Ratio Of Energy versus Earth = (7.7368144*10^21)/(430*10^18) = 18.

DOCTOR DOOM (VICTOR VON DOOM)
EARTH-616

In ‘Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars’ (1985) #10, titled “Death To The Beyonder”, Doctor Doom performs an intelligence feat. In order to confront Beyonder, Doctor Doom steals power from Galactus and Taa II. During the battle against Beyonder, Beyonder dissects Doctor Doom’s body who eventually steals Beyonder’s power.

How much intelligence is generated by Doctor Doom absorbing Beyonder’s power?

DOCTOR DOOM STOLE THE BEYONDER’S POWER IN THE BEYONDER’S REALM BY THE STRONGEST WILLPOWER.

THE ENERGY PROJECTION OF THE BEYONDER COMES FROM BEYOND THE MARVEL UNIVERSE AND IS ZERO SUM ENERGY. DOCTOR DOOM BECAME THE SUPREME BEING IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE.

VISIT OUR CALCULATIONS

Doctor Doom fought the Beyonder in the Beyond realm using the energy of Taa II. Doctor Doom was defeated and survived dissection by the Beyonder. Using his willpower, Doctor Doom overpowered Beyonder and stole his power.

Let’s estimate Doctor Doom’s willpower.

DOCTOR DOOM’S WILLPOWER

Doctor Doom has one of the strongest willpowers in the Marvel Universe. He has peered into millions of futures and he believes Doomworld is the only future where there is peace on Earth. In ‘The Avengers: Emperor Doom,’ Doctor Doom kidnaps the Purple Man in an attempt to mind control the whole Earth. In a duel, with the Purple Man, Doctor Doom resists the Purple Man’s mind control powers with his willpower alone.

In ‘The Avengers: Emperor Doom,’ in a duel, with the Purple Man, Doctor Doom resists the Purple Man’s mind control powers with his willpower alone.

Since Doctor Doom withstood Purple Man’s mind control whose powers were used to mind control the Earth, Doctor Doom’s willpower is at least Inventor.

In ‘Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars’ (1985) #10, Doctor Doom uses his willpower to steal the Beyonder’s power. In the scans, after Doctor Doom has stolen the Beyonder’s power and appears as a giant to the heroes, he claims to be the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe.

We will use these two examples to estimate Doctor Doom’s willpower.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

In the first example, since Doctor Doom resisted the Purple Man’s mind control, which was later used to mind control the Earth, his willpower is at least Inventor. Willpower is a function of mental power, so let’s calculate the power of Doctor Doom’s mind. Please refer to the Intelligence Scale.

Bytes Of Information In Doctor Doom’s Brain = (7,874,965,825 humans)(2.510*10^15 bytes)/(1 human) = 1.9766164*10^25 bytes.

In the second example, Doctor Doom overpowered Beyonder with his willpower, or the power of his mind. Since after stealing Beyonder’s power, Doctor Doom became the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe, we can estimate that his intelligence is at least equal to the Beyonder’s intelligence.

INTELLIGENCE

Since in the What If story, Doctor Doom was able to withstand the Purple Man’s mind control, it would seem his Intelligence Level is Mathematical Computation. However, in the second example, since Doctor Doom is able to overpower a true godlike being and become the Supreme Being in the Marvel Universe, his Intelligence Level is Universal.

Doctor Doom had to generate a Universal Level of Intelligence in order to overpower Beyonder with his willpower.

BLACK PANTHER, SHURI AND THE DORA MILAJE ARE FUGITIVES FROM THE DESTURI COUP IN WAKANDA

In ‘Doomwar’ (2010) #1, T’Challa and Shuri, the Black Panther, has lost his royal title and is a fugitive from Wakanda. The Desturi have seized Wakanda’s government and have sentenced the Queen, Storm of the X-Men, to death. T’Challa has fled Wakanda to seek help from the mutant nation of Utopia.

In Utopia, T’Challa arrives with Shuri and the Dora Milaje to explain the circumstances of recent events. In the past year, T’Challa had been tracking rumors of a dissident group called the Desturi. They are a fundamentalist and xenophobic group that had infiltrated all levels of government.

In 'Doomwar' (2010) #1, T'Challa briefs the X-Men on the Desturi coup d'etat in Wakanda and Doctor Doom its mastermind.

T’Challa found they had access to surveillance but had no leads. Until he was lured into a trap by the mastermind of the coup d’etat, Doctor Doom, who nearly killed him. Later, T’Challa found Doom had infiltrated the palace food and water supplies with nanites swarms. Fearing that everyone he cared for could have been turned into living spy cameras, T’Challa fled Wakanda with Shuri and the Dora Milaje.

White Queen questions about Doctor Doom’s purpose of the revolution. T’Challa responds that its purpose is to obtain the Vibranium supply of Wakanda to upgrade his armor and become the most powerful force on Earth. Cyclops as Head of Utopia, cannot sanction an open war with Wakanda. However, some X-Men willingly volunteer.

DURING T’CHALLA’S AND THE X-MEN’S ATTACK ON WAKANDA, DOCTOR DOOM STEALS ALL OF WAKANDA’S VIBRANIUM

In ‘Doomwar’ (2010) #2, T’Challa and his army attack Wakanda. Wakanda is the most advanced nation on Earth. T’Challa’s army arrive on Wakandan soil and are greeted by the army and the head of the Desturi. Asking the Desturi government to surrender, T’Challa and his army declare themselves to be Wakanda. Suddenly, Nightcrawler teleports T’Challa and Black Panther into the Palace. Despite Nightcrawler’s opposition, Black Panther massacres the people in the Palace.

At the Wakandan border, the X-Men and the Dora Milaje take on the Wakandan army. Back at the Palace, Doctor Doom has given Storm a 10 minute ultimatum to lock-pick the Vibranium Vault otherwise, he will shoot the members of the Royal Family. Nightcrawler attempts to teleport T’Challa to the Vibranium Vault with no success since Doctor Doom has placed a mystical barrier. T’Challa needs the Dora Milaje to hold the Wakandan army for one hour so he can massacre the hundreds of guards at the Royal Palace in order to reach the Vibranium Vault.

In 'Doomwar' (2010) #2, Queen Ororo attempts to lock-pick the Vibranium Vault as Doctor Doom holds T'Challa's mother at gunpoint.

T’Challa arrives at the Vibranium Vault and finds Queen Ororo bound in fetters by Doctor Doom. Doctor Doom gives T’Challa five seconds to give him the key to the final lock or else he will kill Storm. He has to choose between saving the Vibranium and saving Storm. T’Challa does not hesitate and decides to protect the Vibranium.

The countdown ends and Doctor Doom relishing the game, does not kill Ororo. Doom teleports in a flash of lightning. Entering the Vault, T’Challa finds out that all of the Vibranium is gone. Checkmate!

DOCTOR DOOM IS A MEGALOMANIAC WHOSE UNIQUE VISION OF THE FUTURE FOR WORLD PEACE IS DOOMWORLD

In ‘Doomwar’ (2010) #3, Doctor Doom wages his “Doomwar” using Vibranium. In order to unlock the final lock, Doctor Doom had to face Bast, God of Egypt and Panther God of Wakanda. Bast scrutinizes Doctor Doom’s spi; and asks him his motivations for taking Vibranium. The test is purity and if Doctor Doom lies, Bast will devour him.

Doctor Doom tells Bast that though his methods are cruel and villainous, he has purity of intention. Doctor Doom claims mankind is a predator species and that according to his purity, he is a saint. He has gazed into thousand futures, a hundred thousand futures and found that the only future where humanity survives extinction and is at peace is under Doctor Doom‘s rule on Doomworld. Bast, though he finds Doctor Doom’s methods abhorrent, passes Doctor Doom and let’s him have the Vibranium.

THE DOOMWAR BEGINS WITH CASUALTIES ON ALL SIDES

In ‘Doomwar’ (2010) #4, the “Doomwar” over Vibranium begins on a global scale. T’Challa has recruited the Fantastic Four to assist him. Using Vibranium trackers, T’Challa has tracked locations of Vibranium supply at Doombases over the world. Shuri, the Dora Milaje, Invisible Woman, Thing, Human Torch and the X-Men are on the frontlines. When they arrive at the first Doombase, they are unable to destroy the Vibranium-enhanced Doombots. Then, arming themselves with Vibranium-enhanced armors and weapons, T’Challa’s army begins to take down Doombots.

However, there are enormous casualties on both sides. In ‘Doomwar’ (2010) #5, T’Challa and his army suffer great casualties with one third of the Dora Milaje having fallen. However, they have managed to take down only eight percent of the Doombases. T’Challa recognizes that Doom has learnt everything about Vibranium technology and his people is facing extinction. In order to eliminate the threat, he turns to shadow physics. T’Challa invented the discipline to unite quantum science with alchemy. T’Challa’s plan is to send Deadpool and the Midnight Angels to Latveria in order to assassinate Doctor Doom.

Later, Shuri’s team has located one of Doom’s computers. Hacking into the system, they divert all his funding to humanitarian causes.

The Broker who has been running the Doomwar, realizes this and fears Doom will kill him.

IN SYMKARIA, T’CHALLA FINALLY OUTSMARTS DOOM WITH SHADOW PHYSICS BY USING A TRIGGER THAT RENDERS ALL PROCESSED VIBRANIUM INERT

In ‘Doomwar’ (2010) #6, T’Challa finally outsmarts Doctor Doom by rendering all processed Vibranium inert. In a communication with Black Panther, T’Challa informs her that he has sanction a shadow attack of Latveria by the Midnight Angels which cannot be traced. She does not approve T’Challa bypassing her authority and reminds him that Wakanda does not start wars. Doctor Doom’s armor upgrade is finally online and he is able to sense and to tap all the Vibranium which is present everywhere on Earth.

T’Challa is in communication with other scientific and mystical leaders on Earth: Beast, Hank Pym, Tony Stark, Charles Xavier, Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo. They inform T’Challa that all Vibranium objects on Earth have come to life. Since the act leads back to Wakanda, and the threat of a nuclear war looms, they refuse to help T’Challa. Deadpool and the Midnight Angels attack in Latveria but they are no match for Doom. In diplomatic mission to Symkaria, Shuri invites Doctor Doom to come face T’Challa’s army to settle the matter.

The final battle begins. T’Challa’s army is overwhelmed by Doom’s army. During the battle, T’Challa is seemingly defeated by Victor. However, T’Challa finally outsmarts Doctor Doom. He activates a trigger that uses shadow physics to render all the processed Vibranium on Earth inert.

Shuri who had wanted to kill Doom, relents. She promises that she will hunt over the Earth and kill him if he steps foot on Wakandan soil. In the end, Black Panther and Storm watch as the superhero community helps them re-build Wakanda.

PEACE ON EARTH

DOCTOR DOOM HAS AN UNCONVENTIONAL PLAN TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD

In “Avengers: The Emperor Doom” (1987) graphic novel, turns conventional morality on its head and takes over the world. Doctor Doom has long dreamed to rule the world and has used the political and the technological means at his disposal in order to bring about this end. The Prologue begins with Doctor Doom kidnapping the Purple Man for a nefarious purpose.

We are then introduced to Namor walking the streets of Manhattan. The winged Atlantean comments on humanity’s pettiness and its conflicts with Atlantis and the sea world. He is noticed by a police officer who calls reinforcements. Finally, Namor arrives at the location of his rendez-vous, a restaurant.

Namor enters the restaurant. He is asked by one of the attendants whether he has a reservation but he says “No.”1 At that moment, Namor’s coat is destroyed by a power blast. Angered, Namor asks who attacks him and finds Doom motioning at a table to welcome him. Namor sits at the table and vociferates to hear about Doom’s proposition to free Atlantis from “the tyranny of surface-dwellers forever!”1 Doctor Doom draws Namor’s attention to the fact no one has paid attention to them nor Doom’s power blast. He unveils a technological marvel called a psycho-prism.

It was created from a strand of the Purple Man’s hair and Doom is using it to control the will of the people at the restaurant. He informs Namor that he plans to use a giant psycho-prism under construction to subjugate the will of the entire Earth! When he rules the world, he plans to establish Namor as ruler of the sea. Namor is among the strong-willed and three other mechanicals that can resist the effects of the psycho-prism. Before they part, Namor is tasked with implanting adhesive refractory discs to make those individuals susceptible to the Prism’s influence.

CAN DOOM MAKE IT WORK? DOCTOR DOOM CONQUERS THE AVENGERS AND THE WORLD, BECOMING EMPEROR

Doctor Doom constructs his giant psycho-prism with Purple Man inside. Namor goes on his missions, and implants the discs on Vision, Machine Man and Ultron. During his visit at Avengers Mansion, Vision is able to send a recording of Namor’s visit to the West Coast Avengers. They realize Doom’s plan and realize the East Coast Avengers are compromised. Mockingbird is able to trace the attack to Doom Island in the Caribbean. Quickly, they board the Avengers Quinjet and depart for their destination.

Is It Conventional Morality To Take Over The World In Order To Bring Peace?

The graphic novel questions conventional morality. In the end, the Avengers come out on top. But this is due to Doctor Doom’s hubris. As the Avengers and a freed Namor prepare to free Purple Man, Doctor Doom has the finger on the button to trigger nerve gas canisters. However, conflicted over the blandness of world management as opposed to his thirst for conquest and glory, Doctor Doom relents. Ultimately, Doctor Doom was more excited at the battle lust for conquest over the daily meetings of managing the world.

At the same time, his plan succeeded and he was an efficient ruler as he brought peace and ended poverty on Earth. As the graphic novel ends, the Avengers are uneasy about ending Emperor Doom’s reign over the Earth because of its benefits. It is certain that Emperor Doom’s reign brought some good, but with questionable means that turned conventional morality on its head. We can say it is not right, to do evil that some good may come out of it. But, is this the price of freedom?

Marvel Day: In “Enter The Phoenix”, The Thunder God Attempts To End Gladiatorial Combat But Becomes The Son Of A Monster With A Devastating Origin Story

MARVEL DAY

ORIGIN STORIES

THE PHOENIX SHOWS SUPERHEROES’ AND SUPERVILLAINS’ FIGHTS ARE GLADIATORIAL COMBAT

In ‘Avengers’ (2021) #40, Phoenix seeking a host causes gladiatorial combat among superheroes on Earth. The Avengers have located Phoenix rising out of the arctic ice on a volcanic island. Apparently, Phoenix was called to Earth by Namor who seeks to marry her. In fact, the Phoenix has summoned heroes and villains in order to fight each other to claim her as host. “Enter the Phoenix” shows superheroes’ fights are reminiscient of ancient gladiatorial combat.

We begin the first gladiator combat between Captain America and Doctor Doom. The battle is vicious and Doom ultimately gains the upper hand. Doom manages to kill Captain America twice with cosmic blasts, however, aided by the Phoenix, Captain America rises from the ashes to continue fighting. Noticing this as the Phoenix’s testament to Captain America’s valor, Doctor Doom forfeits the battle. Captain America is then transported by Phoenix to the White Hot Room where the other combatants wait their turn.

BLACK PANTHER HAS TO DECIDE TO END THE PHOENIX’S CONTEST

In ‘Avengers’ (2021) #41, the Phoenix continues its gladiatorial combats by selecting combatants from the White Hot Room. We have the following matches: Black Panther vs Man-Thing. Luke Cage vs American Eagle. Shanna The She-Devil vs Moon Girl. Valkyrie (Jane Foster) vs Orb. Hyperion vs Shang-Chi. Red Widow vs Howard The Duck. Black Panther vs Nighthawk. Maya Lopez vs Namor.

In the White Hot Room, the Phoenix speaks to Black Panther in aparte. She tells him to end the contest. Phoenix tells him she knew the old Panther king who fought with glowing rocks but who could end gods. Black Panther promises to end the contest no matter the cost. Phoenix says she wants T’Challa and that she will burn Wakanda’s name across the stars if he agress. Otherwise, she will burn it to ashes. Black Panther refuses and asks Phoenix to become benevolent. Otherwise, he will show Phoenix how he deals with a blizzard.

IN A NEW ORIGIN STORY WITH PHOENIX, THOR BECOMES THE SON OF A MONSTER

In ‘Avengers’ (2021) #42, the Avengers attempt to end Phoenix’s gladiatorial combat. Outside the White Hot Room, on the volcanic island, the Avengers are attempting to contain the Phoenix. The Avengers battle the Phoenix in order to keep her contained in the volcanic island. As the Phoenix is freed, Thor reflects on the link he has shared with the Phoenix time and again. He feels some form of love. She tells him, he is her son. This is the new origin story of Thor and effectively makes him the son of a monster. In ‘Avengers’ (2021) #43, Thor battles his way against Phoenix through his new origin story. The Phoenix finally escapes the volcanic island.

Thor does not believe the lie and tells her Gaia is her mother. He throws his hammer at the Phoenix Force which phases through her. Then, Phoenix Force explains that the lie was necessary for Thor to protect the Earth. She tells the Thunder God is a child of Fire and Thunder. The Avengers are worried about Thor but Iron Man tells Okoye to delay the Wakandan Helicarriers. The Phoenix Force tells Thor, Gaia kept her trapped inside Earth for thousands of years. However, when the final host came, she was free. And now, she remembers Thor. Thor battles Phoenix Force but she soon gains the upper hand. Elsewhere, Captain America is about to face Black Panther in gladiatorial combat.

IN ORIGIN STORIES

IN AN ORIGIN STORY FOR AN EX-CON, LUKE CAGE SETS UP HERO FOR HIRE TO START HIS CRIME-FIGHTING CAREER

In ‘Hero For Hire’ (1972) #1, the origin story of the ex-con Lucas Cage is told before he became Power Man. Luke Cage and Willis Stryker were gang members in Harlem. They were involved in crimes and were fugitives from the law. Over time, Willis became a knife specialist, while Lucas was a brawler. Tired of running, Lucas tried to reform until a girl named Reva came along. Lucas and Willis both competed for her attention. The wealthier Willis who had ascended among the gangs of New York, was able to win Reva’s favors for a while until one night when he was beaten by two members of the Syndicate mafia for cutting onto their turf.

Reva escaped and alerted Lucas who was nearby. Lucas beat up the two men then took Willis to the hospital. Reva told Lucas on the way that she feared her company with Willis. Upon hearing Reva’s comments, at the hospital, Willis broke up with both Reva and Willis. From that time, Lucas and Reva entered into a serious relationship that was leading to marriage. Watching over the couple, Willis set up Lucas, planted drugs at his apartment and tipped off the police. Lucas was then sentenced to prison for a crime he did not commit. Re-kindling her connection to Willis, Reva was then shot by the Syndicate. Willis survived the attack.

This is the story Lucas Cage told Dr. Burnstein before he would become Power Man. One year ago, Lucas Cage had been transferred to Seagate Prison for his crime. Lucas had a violent temper and wanted revenge on Willis for his set-up. He was confined to solitary and got into fights. His plan was to be the first to escape Seagate Prison which was known as “Little Alcatraz.”1 When the prison came under new management, Lucas was offered an opportunity that would forever change his life.

He was contacted by a scientist called Dr. Burnstein who been given a grant by Tony Stark to pursue research on an electro-biochemical system that would enhance cellular regeneration. Dr. Burnstein said Lucas was uniquely qualified for the project for being one of the strongest and healthiest inmates. Seeing it as a chance to get on parole for volunteering in the research project, Lucas eventually accepted. During the initial trial, Lucas tolerated it well. However, one of the prison guards, Billy Bob Rackham saw it as an opportunity to kill Lucas. Increasing the dials to dangerous levels.

Amazingly, Lucas survived the process and on busting out of the machine, he accidentally knocked out Rackham. Realizing his enhanced strength and bulletproof skin, Lucas eventually escaped Seagate Prison. The guards who intercepted him on the way out, finding his clothing on the shore assumed him dead.

Lucas eventually made his way back to New York with a boat he found. On the street, looking for money he stopped a robbery while being bulletproof. The store congratulated him and offered him a reward with an advice to buy clothing to start his superhero career. Lucas started Hero For Hire and took on the name Luke Cage.

WORKING AS A MERCENARY, LUKE CAGE THEN BEATS DOWN ON DOOM FOR NOT PAYING HIS $200

In ‘Hero For Hire’ (1972) #8, Doctor Doom sends an emissary at Hero For Hire. The man hires Luke Cage and offers to pay him $200 a day to capture four men at Bedford-Stuyvesant who have secrets about an unknown company.

Luke heads to the place, investigates and finds the men. He ends up finding them and finds out that the men are robots. Later, he traces his client’s address to the Embassy of Latveria. Going through the security detail, he finds the man only to be stopped by… Doctor Doom! Doom has a job proposition for Luke Cage. Find out in the next issue, why Luke beats down on Doctor Doom.

SHOWDOWN: LUKE CAGE VS IRON MAN

In ‘Power Man’ (1974) #17, Luke Cage celebrates Black Power and becomes Power Man. Frustrated by the lack of news coverage for his heroics, Luke Cage wants to take Hero For Hire to the next level. Fortunately, Luke’s luck may have just turned out. Mr. Orville Smith, who works for Stark Industries communicates to Luke Cage Mr. Stark’s need for the hero to steal his new deep-space exploration suit. However, Luke is not convinced and is ready to throw Orville out but when he sees a personal check from Tony Stark, he changes his mind. The theft is meant to test the factory’s new security system. Only Luke, Orville and Mr. Stark are said to be aware of the test, not even Stark’s personal bodyguard, Iron Man, is in the know.

On the outskirts of Long Island, at night, Luke hitches a ride to Stark Industries on a van. He soon gets past the perimeter and looks up the map Smythe gave him. Moving through corridors he finally reaches the Astrophysics Lab. Seeing two security guards he quickly dispatches them. This causes a whole security unit to rush to the area. Tony Stark, in his office, sees the commotion. Sensing that the space suit is in danger, he changes into Iron Man. Before Luke Cage can leave with the suit, Iron Man intercepts him. The fight is on. Soon, Iron Man is impressed by Cage’s strength and toughness. When Luke damages his suit, “..the kid gloves are OFF!”2

What follows is a flurry of punches that knock the wind out of Luke Cage. Iron Man is about to land one final punch though Luke is still standing. Seeing how tough Iron Man is, Luke Cage decides that the Stark Industries’ test is successful. Iron Man retorts that Stark hired Luke for a test and that he did not know about it. Luke reveals he was hired by Orville Smythe. Iron Man claims he knows every executive on Stark’s payroll and both realized it was a set-up. The real plan was for Luke Cage to serve as a diversion while Orville stole the star-suit. The two superheroes race in the complex and find Orville attending to make his exit with one of the experimental sky-skates. During the battle, Luke damaged Iron Man’s armor so his boot-jets are not working.

Heroically, Luke Cage jumps onto the sky-skates. The ship takes to the air with Luke holding onto it. Barreling through the ship’s door, Luke enters and tussles with Orville in the star-suit. Luke comments the star-suit has the power of a cannon and might kill him. Damaging the star-suit’s circuitry, Luke Cage kicks Orville outside the ship with Orville, unable to fly, crashing down. As the ship is crashing down, Luke Cage gets on com and notifies Iron Man of his predicament. Following Iron Man’s instructions, he is able to put it on remote control. In the end, Luke Cage rips the forged check and asks Iron Man to compensate him for his time.

ORIGIN STORY

Early Years

Victor von Doom was born in a Romani camp outside HaasenstadtLatveria.[34] His mother, Cynthia, was killed in a bargain with Mephisto that went wrong. Despite his father’s attempts to care for her, a noblewoman died and Werner von Doom fled with a young Victor on a cold winter’s night. Victor survived the cold, but unfortunately his father did not.[39] Doom sought to increase his knowledge of both science and magic in order to rescue his mother,[40] whose death he blamed on Mephisto. In his youth, Victor fell in love with a woman named Valeria, but she resisted his advances.[41]

Becoming Doctor Doom

The State University in HegemanNew York offered Victor a scholarship. While attending classes there, he met Reed Richards and Ben Grimm for the first time.[38][40] They developed a dislike for each other, leading to Reed Richards commiting the first prank he had ever pulled, changing Victor’s last name on a trophy to “Doof.”[18] Doom became obsessed with developing a machine that could project the astral form of a being into other dimensions, seeing it as a way to free his mother’s soul from Mephisto’s clutches. Reed pointed out a flaw in Doom’s calculations, but Doom arrogantly ignored his warnings, feeling Reed was trying to upstage him, likely due to their dislike for each other. The machine exploded, scarring Doom’s face. He was soon expelled for conducting unethical experiments. From then on, he blamed Reed Richards for the destruction of his face as well as his expulsion.[38][40]

Disgraced and bitter, Doom traveled the world. Eventually he came upon a small Tibetan village of monks who assisted him in creating a suit of armor. He returned to his homeland of Latveria to overthrow the leader and declare himself king. He then began to use his country’s resources in order to further his plans of world domination. These schemes led Doom into conflict with the Fantastic Four on many occasions, as well as many other superheroes.[40]
