BEST MARVEL ILLUSTRATORS

To begin, the art is Marvel House style. The artist on the series is Ron Frenz. In the 1980s, Frenz came to prominence with his pencils on Amazing Spider-Man. Importantly, he worked on several high-profile titles such as Superman, Thor, Ka-Zar, Spider-Girl and Star Wars. With writer Tom Defalco, Thor (1988) #388 is a series comic that continues “Judgment Day!” from the preceding issue. In the middle story of the story arc, the artist’s pencils are epic with perspective in full coloring and make the comic a true present.

Certainly, George Roussos’ coloring matches the cosmic and epic tone of the story arc and the characters and detailed scenery are fully-colored in crackling backgrounds in the panels. In addition, Brett Breeding’s thick inking is a highlight of this issue. And Ron Frenz’s pencils of the exposition have added emotion with the cosmic introductions of Exitar and Arishem. Notably, the perspective in the characters’ heights works though the double page spread on the left may lack cosmic detail. Moreover, the comic excels at action, adventure, the epic genre and the panel on the left shows the artist’s mastery with composition and explosion!
