In 'Green Lantern' (1994) #50, Kyle Rayner is chosen as the Last Green Lantern.
In Green Lantern (1994) #50, Kyle Rayner is chosen as the Last Green Lantern. DC Comics.

During Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight, Kyle Rayner first appeared. Particularly, the three-part story arc details the fall from grace of Hal Jordan into the cosmic being named Parallax.

In the story arc, Hal goes mad after Cyborg Superman orders the destruction of Coast City by Mongul, thanks to Warworld.

Then, he goes on a rampage murdering the Green Lantern Corps on his way to Oa. Soon, having destroyed the GL Corps, he quickly subdues Sinestro then proceeds to absorb the energy of the Central Power Battery.

Using their last energies, the Guardians sacrifice themselves to create and entrust Ganthet with the last Green Lantern power ring. Afterwards, the Guardian travels to Earth and encounters a struggling freelance artist by the name of Kyle Rayner.

Seriously, he entrusts Kyle with the ring and tells the young man to do what must be done. On that day, Kyle Rayner becomes the Last Green Lantern.

HOW KYLE RAYNER BECOMES ION

FINAL NIGHT

Nonetheless, the heroes succeed in defeating Parallax. Some time later, a new menace emerges that would threaten the very Earth’s existence. At the start of The Final Night, A Sun-Eater threatens to consume the sun and cause the destruction of New Earth.

Again, the heroes band together to stop the cataclysm. When a depowered Superman volunteers for a suicide mission to plant modules in the sun as it goes supernova. Yet, a young hero named Ferro recognizes Superman as a hero and decides to pilot the ship.

However, Hal Jordan as Parallax sacrifices himself by going into the supernova. Finally, he absorbs the supernova blast, channels it with his Oan energy then re-powers the yellow sun.

GREEN LANTERN: CIRCLE OF FIRE

During the event, Kyle fights a cosmic entity named Oblivion. As a result of his girlfriend Alex DeWitt’s murder, Kyle gave birth to the cosmic entity. Indeed, it is a product of Kyle’s rage and hatred out of his subconscious.

After defeating Oblivion, since the energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it is drawn to the residual Parallax energy in the sun. Later, it helps Kyle draw on the immense powers of Parallax and Oblivion.

Since Kyle’s ring has no yellow weakness and is formed from the energies of the Guardians of the Universe it is already very powerful!

GREEN LANTERN: THE POWER OF ION

In the story arc, Kyle has absorbed the energy of a neutron bomb that Grayven unleashed. Furthermore, Kyle now understands that his recent power boost is due to his feeding on the cosmic powers of Parallax and Oblivion from the sun.

Now the sun has a green spot and our GL’s life is about to change. In Green Lantern (2002) #145, Green Lantern fights Nero in order to claim the power. Ultimately, he is triumphant. In the heart of the sun, he bends to the power and becomes… Ion!

OVERPOWERED, GREEN LANTERN IS MERGED TO ION, AN EMOTIONAL ENTITY

Green Lantern: The Power Of Ion (2003). DC Comics.

From the beginning, the Ion entity existed as one of the Emotional Spectrum Entities. As matter of fact, Ion is the name given to the green Entity of Will.

Originally, Ion existed in the Central Power Battery, as the Entity that powered the green energy of willpower harvested by the Guardians of the Universe.

Importantly, it served as a protection against the yellow Emotional Entity of Fear, Parallax, which also existed in the Central Power Battery.

When Hal Jordan absorbs the Central Power Battery, both Parallax and Ion are freed. Both need a host in order to survive. For its part, Parallax fed on Hal Jordan’s fear.

Later, Ion would empower Kyle Rayner’s creativity and willpower. As Ion, Kyle becomes a god-like being though in order to safeguard his humanity, he eventually relinquishes the power.

BECOMING ION, #KYLERAYNER’S WILLPOWER IS OMNIPOTENT

Variant Comics

Generally, Ion is among DC’s overpowered beings. Among Ion’s list of powers are immortality, time manipulation, reality manipulation, energy projection, energy absorption, nigh omnipresence, flight, emotional manipulation, nigh omniscience, telepathy.

Since Kyle was able to re-build the Central Power Battery and resurrect the Guardians of the Universe as infants, he possesses nigh omnipotence on a Multiversal Scale. Potentially, he is able to restore all the Emotional Entities of the Emotional Spectrum.

HOW KYLE’S POWERS WORK

As Kyle explains to his girlfriend Jade, he is able to exist and work in different locations of the universe at the same time. Possibly, the Ion power works by unlocking Kyle’s creativity and allowing him to exercise his will without being bound by time and space.

In effect, Kyle is truly god-like and can potentially exist in all timelines and places of the DC multiverse at the same time. Another character who is able to realize such an effect is Doctor Manhattan though not with Kyle’s level of perfection and power.

In fact, in the last issue, Kyle claims he can change Parallax’s past without creating ripples in the timeline. And that, is nigh omnipotence!

In contrast, in Doomsday Clock, it is revealed that when Doctor Manhattan moved Alan Scott’s lantern six inches out of his reach, he altered the DC multiverse continuity leading to the New 52.

WHY ION IS AN OVERPOWERED BEING

AS ION, HE CLAIMS HE CAN CHANGE PARALLAX’S PAST WITHOUT ALTERING THE TIMELINE

In Green Lantern (1990) #150, Ion sees the timeline. DC Comics.

In Green Lantern (1990) #150, Ion attempts to change the timeline. Previously, Kyle’s godlike behavior has alarmed Superman and the JLA.

In a conversation, Superman reminds Kyle that the mission of the JLA is to inspire and to protect humanity, and not taking away its choices by solving its problems.

In the issue, Ion contemplates the past Green Lanterns in the timeline: Alan Scott, Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner.

Particularly, he thinks about Hal Jordan who became Parallax.

Then, he is interrupted by Hal Jordan who is now Spectre.

When the Spectre inquires about Kyle’s purpose, Ion claims he can prevent Parallax’s existence without altering the timeline.

Though this is merely a statement of power, it does suggest Ion is nigh omnipotent in willpower.

HIS CREATIVIY MAKES HIM OMNIPRESENT

In 'Green Lantern' (2002) #146, Ion is doing art work in his studio and feeding poor people in Uganda.

In Green Lantern (2002) #146, Jade visits Kyle at his studio.

There, she finds out that the GL has been working for hours and has completed high-quality comics ahead of schedule. In fact, he has not slept.

Even more impressive, Kyle tells her that as Ion his creativity has been unlocked and he is able to exist in multiple places at once.

For example, he is working in his studio and at the same time, also feeding the poor in Uganda.

Definitely, a Cosmic-Level feat of Super Speed since light travels around the Earth at 0.1337 seconds.

And we know according to the uncertainty principle, electrons travel at the speed of light and can be at two places at the same time.

Thus, it would take FTL speed for instantaneous travel.

Definitely, a feat of Infinite-Level of Energy Projection considering the powers of the Guardians which are considerable.

In Green Lantern (2002) #148, Ion performs a feat of super-intelligence.

In order to locate his father who left him and his mother when young, he scans the DNA of every human on Earth.

Afterwards, it takes him about 10 minutes in order to identify the matching DNA.

Definitely, a godlike feat requiring an intelligence capable of memorizing the 2.1*1019 letters in the human genomes of the entire human population.

From Black Panther, Doomwar #1, we can calculate the energy of DNA replication to be 3.2*1032 J or 6*1022 bytes/s of intelligence.

Thus, an Inventor-Level of intelligence. Visit the Intelligence Scale for more information.
