THE HULK HAS SURVIVED NUKES AND GAMMA BOMBS

Generally, Hulk has been described as the strongest Marvel hero. At the same time, he may also be the most durable.

Particularly, Hulk’s gamma ray physiology grants him several super powers such as nigh-invulnerability, resistance to injury, superhuman stamina, superhuman durability, a regenerative healing factor and self-regeneration manipulation.

Though other media have been unable to fully do justice to Hulk’s unlimited strength and durability. At the same time, in the comics, the Green Behemoth has displayed tremendous durability and regeneration.

In multiple instances, the Jade Giant has survived nuclear explosions and gamma bombs, even at ground zero.

WHAT ARE GAMMA RAYS?

In Tales To Astonish (1964) #62, Hulk survives a gamma bomb at ground zero. Let’s give additional information about gamma bombs and gamma ray bursts.

Gamma Rays | Science Mission Directorate

Gamma-rays have the smallest wavelengths and the most energy of any other wave in the electromagnetic spectrum. These waves are generated by radioactive atoms and in nuclear explosions. Gamma-rays can kill living cells, a fact which medicine uses to its advantage, using gamma-rays to kill cancerous cells.

Gamma-rays are the most energetic form of light and are produced by the hottest regions of the universe. They are also produced by such violent events as supernova explosions or the destruction of atoms, and by less dramatic events, such as the decay of radioactive material in space.

Things like supernova explosions (the way massive stars die), neutron stars and pulsars, and black holes are all sources of celestial gamma-rays.

Can you tell me about gamma-ray bursts?

At least once a day, the sky lights up with a spectacular flash of gamma-rays coming from deep space. The brightness of this flash of gamma-rays can temporarily overwhelm all other gamma-ray sources in the universe. The burst can last from a fraction of a second to over a thousand seconds.

The time that the burst occurs and the direction from which it will come cannot be predicted. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can release more energy in 10 seconds than the Sun will emit in its entire 10 billion-year lifetime!

HOW HULK’S DURABILITY WORKS

3. 800 POUNDS OF BONE MARROW AND MUSCLE TISSUE

In 'Batman vs The Incredible Hulk' Batman performs a super strength feat. During the battle, Batman kicks Hulk at the solar plexus, depriving him of air and making the monster susceptible to sleeping gas.

First, Hulk’s gamma radiation physiology grants him an extremely tough and durable skin. Thanks to his physiology, the transformation into Hulk adds 800 pounds of bone marrow and muscle tissue to Hulk’s body.

Usually, for a male, the normal body fat percentage is between 2% and 24%. Above, is obesity. In Hulk’s case, his body likely does not have any body fat, or perhaps, a negligible range.

Because of his hundreds of pounds of muscle, Hulk’s strength is definitely superhuman. In comparison, an athlete or bodybuilder can gain four to seven pounds of muscle on average in a year.

Furthermore, strongmen who can bench press up to 900 pounds can weigh up to 400 pounds.

In addition, Hulk has hundreds of pounds of bone marrow. As we know, the bone marrow produces stem cells which differentiate into red blood cells and white blood cells.

For this reason, Hulk likely has a high resistance to toxins and diseases due to having more circulation and a more capable immune system.

Realistically, a muscle can withstand a force of 30-40 Newtons or 3-4 kg. With up to 800 pounds of muscle, Hulk can lift up to 3.2 tons at baseline strength.

2. HULK’S CELLS ARE LIKELY IMMORTAL

In 'World War Hulk: X-Men' (2007) #1, Hulk's eyes regenerate after they had been clawed out by X-23.

In World War Hulk: X-Men (2007) #1, Hulk seeks revenge on Professor X and the Illuminati after they exiled him to Sakaar. In the issue, Hulk comes to the Xavier Institute For Higher Learning in search of Professor X.

Soon, a battle follows between Hulk and the New X-Men. During the fight, X-23 claws out Hulk’s eyes. Eventually, however, Hulk trounces them. At the end of the fight, Hulk’s eyes have regenerated. How is that possible?

On a regular occasion, x-rays are used in order to treat cancer cells. Certainly, we know cancer cells have the ability to divide for an unlimited amount of time. In fact, they have been termed immortal since they do not undergo cell-programmed apoptosis.

In Hulk’s case, his cells have been mutated by gamma radiation. Also, a remarkable super power the Green Behemoth possesses is the ability to regenerate cells, organs and limbs.

There is little question, that Hulk’s cells are not cancerous, rather, the gamma rays make them radioactive.

As we know, gamma rays are higher in energy than x-rays. At the same time, it is possible that they allow Hulk’s radioactive cells the ability to replicate when destroyed. Likely, the gamma rays allow stem cells to regenerate from damaged cells or destroyed tissue.

In effect, this is a beneficial mutation that creates immortal cells in Hulk.

1. THE MADDER HE GETS, THE STRONGER HE GETS, THE TOUGHER HE GETS

In ‘Incredible Hulk’ (2010) #610, Hulk performs a super strength feat. He reverts to Hulk and his step creates creates earthquakes on the Eastern states. AP Photo/Marvel Comics.

During the World War Hulk event, Hulk emerges amped out of the Cathexis Ray Generator. In one of his most popular feats, the superhero creates earthquakes on the Eastern seaboard with his steps.

Generally, the popular phrase about Hulk is true: the madder Hulk gets, the stronger he gets. Also, it is true that his durability also increases with his strength. Together, strength and durability depend on Hulk’s adrenaline levels in the blood.

Potentially, Hulk’s durability is limitless since his rage has been described to be limitless.

For these reasons, Hulk is a tough enemy to put down. In effect, he is invincible since he becomes as strong as his rage allows. Therefore, the only way to defeat the Hulk is to take away his rage.

Only beings such as Silver Surfer have been able to defeat Hulk completely by calming his anger. Visit our article on Black Bolt and the Heralds of Galactus.
