GALACTUS BEQUEATHS HERALDS WITH THE POWER COSMIC

In Silver Surfer (1968) #1, Silver Surfer is born. Marvel Comics

This month, our Hot Take is Superman with the Power Cosmic can conquer Marvel. Let’s start with heralds of Galactus.

In our Marvel Day article, we learnt the origin of Silver Surfer, Galactus’ first herald. To save his home planet Zenn-La from the Devourer of Worlds, Norrin Radd swore to Galactus to become his herald and find him planets to consume.

To this end, Galactus recreated Norrin with a silvery skin, a silver surfboard to roam the spaceways and granted him the Power Cosmic. He became… Silver Surfer! After meeting Earth, Norrin rebelled against his master. Later, the star god has had other heralds. Notably, in a crossover, Superman became his herald. First, a little about the Power Cosmic.

WHAT IS THE POWER COSMIC?

Fantastic Four (1966) #49, Galactus’ Taa II arrives on Earth. Marvel Comics.

In the previous universe, Galan lived on Taa. Upon surviving the destruction of his home universe, Galan incubated in a Cosmic Egg merging with the Sentience of the Universe and the Power Cosmic. Emerging from the Cosmic Egg, he was observed by a Watcher who realized the tremendous power the nascent Galactus possessed to feed on the living energy of planets but the Watcher decided not to kill Galactus.

Sensing his hunger, Galactus consumed the nearby planet of Archeopia.

The Power Cosmic is what makes the mortal Galan of Taa become Galactus. Should Galactus lose the Power Cosmic, he reverts back to his mortal form.[6][7][8][9] Additionally, if Galactus’ Power Cosmic is absorbed by someone else, on a small scale, it results in a Herald, but on a large scale, that new recipient becomes a new Galactus-like being.[10][6] After being depowered, Galan has referred his dislodged Power Cosmic as the “Soul of Galactus.”[1]

Indeed, Taa II is so massive several planets and even a star are held captive by its gravitational pull.
