OVERPOWERED BEINGS

IN COSMIC HIERARCHY

THE ENIGMA FORCE CHOSE SPIDER-MAN

IvaN The UnStoppable

During the Copper Age, Marvel Comics greatly expanded Spider-Man‘s universe: a new love interest in Felicia Hardy, a new and great black costume and even, new powers. Over the years, Spider-Man’s super powers expanded. In Acts Of Vengeance: Spider-Man & The X-Men, the Enigma Force chooses Spider-Man as the new Captain Universe.

Though the story arc was temporary, it shook the status quo in an impressive way.

Post-Secret Wars, Spider-Man fought an increasing darkness from his alien symbiote. At a time when the hero had finally settled into his marriage with Mary Jane. When Peter least expected it, an accident with an extra-dimensional energy source at Empire State University gave him a serious power-up.

For a time, Peter was plagued by frequent spider-sense shocks and became Cosmic Spider-Man. Read our review to find out about this story arc.

OVERPOWERED, COSMIC SPIDER-MAN HAS SKYFATHER POTENTIAL

IvaN The UnStoppable

Notably, Spider-Man possesses the proportionate super strength, super speed, agility and senses of a spider. Usually, the hero is a Street Level or Team Wrecker in the Power Hierarchy. According to Essential Official Handbook of The Marvel Universe Vol. 2, Deluxe Edition, Spider-Man can lift 10 tons.

In Amazing Spider-Man (1989) #327, Cosmic Spider-Man showcased why he is a Class 100 powerhouse. In a battle against Magneto, the Champion of the Enigma Force effortlessly lifted a cruise ship.

Really, Cosmic Spider-Man showcased Skyfather potential. In fact, he showed the power of reality-warping as he created a lightning bolt by wishing.

Among his super powers are: Planetary Level super strength, super speed, nigh invulnerability, flight, super vision, telescopic vision, super hearing, matter manipulation, energy projection and energy absorption. Later, we will see why he may be #MarvelsMostPowerfulHero.

Certainly, the heroes of the Marvel Universe opposed Spider-Man despite his benevolence. Soon, Spider-Man is attacked by a Doombot. When the attack fails, the Skyfather realized his humanity and decided to rid himself of his super powers with Doom’s power stealing device.

In the issue, Cosmic Spider-Man effortlessly defeated Nebula, a being powered by an energy source of near-infinite power.

DC vs Marvel: Darkseid or Thanos, Who Is The Better Villain? (And First Appearance)

Darkseid vs Thanos in 'DC Versus Marvel.'

DC VS MARVEL

DEATH BATTLE!

IN SUPERVILLAINS

THE TOP A-LIST VILLAINS AT DC AND MARVEL

Darkseid vs Thanos in 'DC Versus Marvel.'

Last month, we ranked the formidabilities in a potential Darkseid vs Thanos battle. And we looked at the characters in continuity at their highest powers: Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet and Darkseid with the Anti-Life Equation.

Now, this month, we look at who between both A-list villains is the better villain.

To this end, we have come up with a villainy score that compares both characters in eight categories: Sales, Origin Story, Character Evolution, Cast, Quality Opponents, Villainy, Power, Popularity. Before we compare our villains let’s list some rules.

  1. The Villainy Score is rated out of 8 points.
  2. For Thanos, we list only the Earth-616 continuity and for Darkseid Post-Crisis, Post-Flashpoint and Rebirth.
  3. Since we are comparing Sales and Popularity, we include the villains’ performance in other media and their Google Search Results.
  4. For Power, we list their highest achievements across Earth-616, Post-Crisis, Post-Flashpoint and Rebirth continuities.

So, let’s compare Darkseid and Thanos in the villainy department.

BECOME A FREE MEMBER TO VIEW THE POWER LEVEL WIKI

VILLAINY SCORES

Darkseid.

VILLAINY SCORE: 4

SALES

For sales, Darkseid lags behind Thanos. In the comic medium, it appears the God of Evil is selling top dollar. In 2009, Final Crisis ranked 14 on the Top Comics of the year with an estimated 127,000 units sold.

Later, in 2020, the Justice League Dark: Apokolips War animated film made $5,474,989 in Total Estimated Domestic Video Sales. In the movie department, the success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League is not sufficient to overcome the Disney juggernaut.

Thanos.

VILLAINY SCORE: 4

SALES

Though Thanos does not have Darkseid’s level of presence in comics and animation, with fewer comic appearances than Darkseid overall.

At the same time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made the villain a pop icon. Together, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame have brought in about $4.8 billion worldwide.

Likely, this is more than the revenue of all the movies in the DCEU combined.

ADVANTAGE: THANOS

ORIGIN STORY

In some respects, Darkseid’s origin story has been changed over DC continuity.

Post-Crisis, he was Prince Uxas who killed his brother Drax and claimed the Omega Effect. In the New 52, Darkseid was a peasant who ascended to the throne of Apokolips.

For the most part, the New God’s story deserved to be more known.

ORIGIN STORY

Really, Thanos’ origin story is better known. In true Marvel fashion, he is given a character flaw.

Namely, being a Deviant among the perfect Eternals of Titan. For the most part, this explains his descent into villainy. And his affection for the embodiment of Death.

Definitely, he is more fleshed out in his motivations.

DARKSEID’S FIRST APPEARANCE IS IN SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #134 CGC 8.0 FIRST APPEARANCE OF DARKSEID 1970 DC COMIC BOOK

THANOS’S FIRST APPEARANCE IS IN STAN LEE & JIM STARLIN SIGNED THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #55 REPRINT COMIC BAS SLAB

ADVANTAGE: THANOS

CHARACTER EVOLUTION

In many respects, both characters have evolved over the years. Namely, it took Darkseid millennia before finally obtaining the ALE.

In the New 52, Darkseid was conquering the DC multiverse, killing versions of Superman in order to find the ALE and Grail.

After Infinite Frontier, DC Comics revealed True Form Darkseid.

CHARACTER EVOLUTION

In addition, Thanos has evolved speedily. Once a third rate villain, he arose to prominence with the conquest of the Cosmic Cube.

Then, he set his sights on the Infinity Gauntlet. Post-IG, the Mad Titan attempted a path of redemption.

However, Thanos Wins revealed a possible future where the villain has eliminated all the heroes in the Marvel Universe.

ADVANTAGE: THANOS

CAST

Really, this is where Darkseid truly separates himself.

Indeed, as a New God and ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid has a colorful cast of characters.

From Desaad, to Granny Goodness, the Female Furies, and his immediate family like his uncle Steppenwolf.

During Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, the cast exemplified the type of cosmic opera that the New Gods can be.

CAST

Tragically, Thanos has remained a solitary figure. As a space conqueror, he has assembled the Black Order and conquered civilizations.

In Infinity, he comes to Earth looking for his Inhuman son Thane.

Despite his power, the Mad Titan has often had poor advisors that sought to dethrone him.

ADVANTAGE: DARKSEID

QUALITY OPPONENTS

For the most part, Darkseid has had God in Heaven or Abstracts in the Nil, namely the Monitors, as his quality opponents.

Though it occurred off-panel, Darkseid successfully waged war on Heaven and gained the Anti-Life Equation.

QUALITY OPPONENTS

Unfortunately, Marvel: The End is non-canon. At the same time, with the IG Thanos has successfully conquered the Marvel Universe.

ADVANTAGE: DARKSEID

VILLAINY

In this department, Darkseid figures as pure evil. First, with the Omega Effect he can erase and resurect life.

Second, with the ALE, he can erase free will. Finally, Darkseid constantly evolves into his True Form.

Let’s also add that Darkseid’s Desaad is an expert in torture and mind control.

VILLAINY

In reality, Thanos is psychotic.

Indeed, his lust for power has plagued him with a hubris that ultimately convinces him to be unfit for ultimate power.

In the end, we are assured Than conquers the Marvel Universe. But, Thanos seeks to be a God whereas Darkseid is a God.

ADVANTAGE: DARKSEID

POWER

POWER

See our Formidability rating in the previous article.

ADVANTAGE: DARKSEID

POPULARITY

Generally, Darkseid is more popular in the comic medium. In the Post-Crisis continuity, he boasts 456 Appearances.

However, Google Search Results yield 4,340,000 results.

POPULARITY

In order for Thanos to match his popularity, we must add the Disciple of Death’s 362 Appearances to his 139 Minor Appearances.

As the winner, Google Search Results yield  46,700,000 results.

ADVANTAGE: THANOS

VERDICT:

Though Thanos is more popular and successful in sales, Darkseid is a classic villain who seeks to re-fashion the DC multiverse in his image. Tie.

And that’s our ranking! Don’t forget to leave comments if you liked the DC vs Marvel.

THE FORMIDABLE WARRIORS LIST

In our new hotness, we have The Formidable Warriors List. Here, we cover the greatest battles of a particular character in a comic or series, and how it made it a best-seller. In our new hotness for January, is Adam Warlock in Warlock and The Infinity Watch (1991) #1.

First, let’s reveal a poll on Twitter. Then, let’s show how it was a success.

WHY ADAM WARLOCK IS ON THE FORMIDABLE WARRIORS LIST

Warlock and the Infinity Watch (1991) #1. Marvel Comics.

INFINITY GAUNTLET SEQUEL

Namely, Warlock and the Infinity Watch (1991) #1 is the sequel to the classic Infinity Gauntlet story that skyrocketed Thanos into super-stardom in the Marvel Universe. In a few words, Adam Warlock has led the Marvel Universe against the threat of Thanos.

Now, having successfully defeated Thanos and ended the threat, he has claimed the mantle of the Supreme Being of the Marvel Universe with the Infinity Gauntlet. Really, it does not get better than this!

THE BATTLE THAT SOLD THE RUN

Importantly, the abstract stand-off between Adam Warlock and Living Tribunal sold the run from the beginning. Let’s explain. In the Star Chamber, it’s getting hotter.

There, an assemblage of cosmic entities and abstract level beings are hearing Eternity’s suit against Adam Warlock, the Supreme Being. When Eternity questions Warlock’s supemacy, Adam’s temper fires a powerful blast that fells everyone.

However, with a snap, Living Tribunal restores order.

In Warlock and the Infinity Watch (1991) #1, Living Tribunal restores order with a finger snap. Marvel Comics.

Then, Eternity presents his case detailing Warlock’s creation, character evolution, his sado-masochistic tendencies as well as his darkest secret. After he has finished his suit, the powerful stand-off of unimaginable might between two omnipotent beings follows!

In 'Warlock and The Infinity Watch (1992) #1, the confrontation between the Living Tribunal and Adam Warlock with the Infinity Gauntlet would lay waste to reality.
In Warlock and the Infinity Watch (1991) #1, Adam Warlock and Living Tribunal stand-off. Marvel Comics.

Certainly, you will have to read the issue to see how it ends. However, the first issue does set the tone for the run and does reveal the creative team’s ambitions. Definitely, the stand-off between Adam Warlock and the Living Tribunal sold fans on the series.

SALES, SALES, SALES

On the footsteps of Infinity Gauntlet, anticipation for the Jim Starlin and Angel Medina run was high. Particularly, the creative team released 42 issues for the series that ran from December 1991 to July 1995.

Though mostly with B-list and C-list characters, the series was among the best sellers in 1992. According to Comichron, Warlock and the Infinity Watch (1991) #1, ranked 41 in sales in December 1991.

Though not one of the most popular comics, it was nonetheless successful in 1992, holding spots in the Top 300 for the year.

Let’s rank Warlock’s formidability with the Infinity Gauntlet.

BECOME A MEMBER TO VIEW THE POWER LEVEL WIKI

FORMIDABILITY

Strength Class: Infinite 100%
Weaknesses: Artificial Being 50%
Quality Opponents: God or Abstract 100%
Limitations: Willpower 100%

SCORE: 75

FORMIDABILITY:

WARRIOR

For the most part, Adam Warlock shares the same physicals as Thanos with the IG. In fact, he possesses Infinite super-strength. At the same time, Eternity’s suit contends his weakness is his mental unstability.

In reality, Eternity is referring to Adam being an artificial being with no experience with human emotion. Despite his power, his emotions let him lose control in the Star Chamber.

However, Adam’s mysticism allows him to overcome Thanos’ power dependency. Thanks to his link to the Soul Gem, Warlock was able to take control of the IG at the end of Infinity Gauntlet.

For that reason, willpower or mind is properly his limitation. And in that sense, he is more formidable with the IG than Thanos. Certainly, his quality opponent in the first issue is Living Tribunal who is a God or Abstract.

QUALITY OPPONENTS

During the entire run, Adam Warlock and the Infinity Watch face a list of cosmic enemies such as the Omega, Man-Beast, Thanos and Magus. For the most part, the enemies are either Cosmic Beings or Skyfathers.

Also, the series centers on the protection of the six Infinity Gems which have been bestowed to different guardians in order to protect from their destructive use together.

In addition, there are questions related to the cosmic hierarchy and how Warlock and the Infinity Watch fit in with cosmic entities such as Galactus, Living Tribunal or Eternity.

FAN RECEPTION

Since its initial release, the comic has remained popular among fans. In fact, it has been collected in Infinity Watch Vol. 1 (Warlock and the Infinity Watch (1992-1995)) and Infinity Watch Vol. 2 (Warlock and the Infinity Watch (1992-1995)).

RECOMMENDATION:

Definitely, collect this cosmic doo-wop comic in single issues or paperback in comic format.

In Marvel Universe: The End (2003) #5, Thanos faces the Marvel Universe assembled. Marvel Comics.

QUALITY OPPONENTS

Generally, our formidability takes into account a character’s quality of opponents. Using this hierarchy, we can formulate a Power Hierarchy. Namely, it is the following:

Peak Human, Assassin, Metahuman, Criminal Mastermind/Team-Wrecker, Warrior, Hi-Tech Genius/Enhanced, Political Leader, Demon or Monster/Supernatural Being, Champion, Cosmic Being, Skyfather, God or Abstract.

Before we rank the Top 10, let’s list some rules.

  1. First, only beings below God or Abstract are included. God or Abstract include Galactus, Eternity, Living Tribunal, Beyonder, One-Above-All.
  2. Since we focus on feats, we will go by inventions or planning only.
  3. Different races in the Marvel Universe are included such as the Eternals, humans, Inhumans.

Let’s rank our Top 10.

10. PROFESSOR XAVIER

Professor X. Marvel Comics.
Power Hierarchy: Metahuman 17%

POWER HIERARCHY:

METAHUMAN

What seems like a benign invention has actually changed the course of Marvel history. Namely, Professor X’s Cerebro is actually an E.S.P. device that helps him locate good and bad mutants.

Generally, though telepathy is a super power in the Marvel Universe, we can count it as super-genius intelligence. For the reason that being granted access to the secret thoughts and desires of men is definitely a god-like ability or super power.

Furthermore, Professor X has the intelligence to show for it. As matter of fact, an expert in genetics and the life sciences, the Professor X has shown remarkable scientific ingenuity s well as planning in combat situations.

Definitely, I would not want to mess with someone who once defeated Phoenix in a psionic battle!

9. BLACK BOLT

Black Bolt. Marvel Comics.
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

POWER HIERARCHY:

COSMIC BEING

Though not really an inventor, Black Bolt is nonetheless one of the most capable scientists on Marvel Earth. During Infinity, Black Bolt invented the T-bomb.

When detonated, the bomb would cause all humans to undergo Terrigenesis and become Inhumans. Definitely, a nightmarish thought!

8. BLACK PANTHER

Black Panther. Marvel Comics.
Power Hierarchy: Metahuman 17%

POWER HIERARCHY:

METAHUMAN

As matter of fact, Black Panther is really a super-genius. Early, T’Challa earned a PhD in physics from Oxford University. Generally, Black Panther is a master tactician, problem solver and inventor.

During the Doomwar, T’Challa revealed he combined his knowledge of physics with alchemy in order to create new scientific discipline: shadow physics.

Now let’s move onto an actual scalable feat. During the Incursion in Secret Wars, Black Panther actually helped design the life raft. Moreover, he also designed an inter-dimensional planet-busting bomb!

Generally speaking, T’Challa is rated among the eight smartest minds on Earth. And he deserves it!

7. BEAST

Beast. Marvel Comics.
Power Hierarchy: Metahuman 17%

POWER HIERARCHY:

METAHUMAN

In his Top 25 Smartest list, Victor Grubbs at CBR.com calls Beast a Renaissance man. What makes Hank McCoy stand out is that despite his blue monster appearance, he is very intellectually gifted, a man of culture and letters.

From the beginning, Beast was a founding member of the original X-Men. Furthermore, he would join the Avengers, X-Factor and even the Secret Avengers during Civil War.

In the intelligence department, Beast is among the eight smartest people on Marvel Earth. Namely, his expertises in medicine, anatomy, biophysics, electronics, biochemistry and genetics are at the top.

Among his most remarkable feats is his discovery of the hormonal extract that causes the X-gene. In addition, Hank discovered a cure to the Legacy Virus that devastated the mutant population.

6. HANK PYM

Hank Pym. Marvel Comics.
Power Hierarchy: Team-Wrecker 42%

POWER HIERARCHY:

TEAM-WRECKER

Without a doubt, Hank Pym is a revolutionary mind in the Marvel Universe. Really, there was hesitation as who has been the more inventive mind between Ant-Man and Iron Man. Later, we will see why Iron Man deserves the higher spot.

Among the most inventive minds on Earth, Hank Pym has been called by the Abstract named Eternity, “Earth’s Scientist Supreme.”1 Really, his discoveries have been ground-breaking.

Thanks to the Pym Particles, he discovered the Microverse by shrinking to subatomic scale and the Macroverse by increasing his size near infinity.

Though he is a super-genius, his attitude and his most important malfunctioning inventions – namely, Ultron – have prevented him from succeeding. Often times, he has been considered a failure. Read our Avengers: Rage of Ultron product review.

5. IRON MAN

Iron Man. Marvel Comics.
Power Hierarchy: Enhanced 50%

POWER HIERARCHY:

ENHANCED

For the most part, Tony Stark is a businessman, a public figure and an inventor in the Marvel Universe. Importantly, he is well known for his Iron Man armors which have continually evolved over the years in response to threats and personal challenges.

Two reasons why Iron Man has succeeded where Hank Pym has not: his inventions have successfully revolutionized business and he has recovered from addiction.

At the same time, Iron Man performed a feat that has outclassed Hank. In AvX, Tony invents the Phoenix Killer Armor which temporarily bombs the Phoenix, though splitting it in the Phoenix Five.

4. BRUCE BANNER

Dr. Bruce Banner. Marvel Comics
Power Hierarchy: Cosmic Being 83%

POWER HIERARCHY:

COSMIC BEING

Generally, BannerTech is developed in order to solve a problem. Regularly, Hulk is hunted by the authorities, the heroes and villains. To this end, Bruce’s expertise in gamma radiation has enabled him to create devices for teleportation, force fields or hologram projection.

For the sheer ingenuity of his inventions, Dr. Banner belongs near the top of this list.

3. THANOS

Power Hierarchy: Skyfather 92%

POWER HIERARCHY:

SKYFATHER

Certainly, Thanos needs no introduction. Indeed, his villainy, intelligence and resources make him a fomidable foe. Importantly, Thanos’ inventions are for a single purpose: universal destruction!

In Annihilation, Thanos proved why he may be the Marvel Universe’s most dangerous foe. After Tenebrous and Aegis captured Galactus and Silver Surfer, the captured were turned over to the Annihilation Wave.

Dangerously, in order to help Annihilus conquer the Prime Universe, Thanos imprisoned Galactus to a bomb that was absorbing the energy he was feeding on. And the ultimate purpose was to destroy the Marvel multiverse for the Negative Zone.

Power Hierarchy: Metahuman 17%

POWER HIERARCHY:

METAHUMAN

Doctor Doom. Marvel Comics.

Power Hierarchy: Skyfather 92%

POWER HIERARCHY:

Not much needs to be said about these two rivals. As matter of fact, Mister Fantastic is ahead of Doctor Doom, especially in the science department. Overall, they are in a league of their own. And that says a lot.

1. HIGH EVOLUTIONARY

High Evolutionary. Marvel Comics.
Power Hierarchy: Skyfather 92%

POWER HIERARCHY:

SKYFATHER

Among the Skyfathers in Marvel, other than Odin, Zeus, Mephisto and Thanos, High Evolutionary is among the greatest scientific minds. At his highest, High Evolutionary is able to predict the universe from beginning to end.

In addition, he is the actual father of twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Furthermore, read our product review for Uncanny Avengers: Counter-Evolutionary.

Where High Evolutionary outclasses every super-genius on the list, is the fact that he has used science to actually create life. Moreover, he created Counter-Earth where Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch travel in the comic.

And that’s our ranking! Don’t forget to leave comments if you liked the Super Power Explained.

DEATH BATTLE!

IN SUPERVILLAINS

THE TOP A-LIST VILLAINS AT DC AND MARVEL

Darkseid vs Thanos in 'DC Versus Marvel.'
Darkseid vs Thanos in DC Versus Marvel (1996).

In the mega-hit crossover DC Versus Marvel (1996), two powerful abstract entities named the Brothers threatened the existence of the DC and Marvel universes. Namely, in order to decide whose universe survives a contest of champions was decreed by the cosmic entities.

In a series of battles, the heroes of both universes duked it out in outcomes decided by fan-vote. Largely, the battles were a popularity contest though they indeed were fun!

In some respect, one element that has not been appreciated enough is the off-panel confrontation between Darkseid and Thanos. So, let’s ask the obvious question: Who would win in a battle between Darkseid, The Boss vs My Boy Thanos?

Really, both are A-list villains in their respective universes. Namely, Thanos is well known for conquering the Infinity Gauntlet and bringing the Marvel universe to his heel.

At the same time, Darkseid achieved virtual omnipotence in his millennial conquest of the Anti-Life Equation, which threatened the existence of the DC multiverse.

At the same time, Thanos also experienced real victory in Marvel: The End. But since the story is non-canon, we cannot use it to compare both villains.

So, let’s compare Thanos with the IG to Darkseid with the ALE.

FORMIDABILITY

Generally, formidability is the ability to compete, match and defeat a foe despite overwhelming odds. Usually, formidability indicates a warrior’s ability to defeat a stronger, more powerful and more resourceful enemy.

For this reason, it is almost interchangeable with the Fighting Skills Level. For example, this explains why Batman is able to defeat Killer Croc or Bane who are in fact stronger or more powerful.

Using tactics, training, technology, resources and intel, Batman is usually able to take on more powerful opponents.

Before we rank our two A-list villains, let’s list some rules.

  1. First, the superhero should be able to consistently defeat opponents above their strength class or power level.
  2. In terms of power level or fighting skills, they should have few or no weaknesses.
  3. Consistently, they should face quality opponents that are at least able to destroy a city.
  4. Finally, they should have fewer limitations in power, strength, ability or intelligence.

First, we will compare them in Strength Class, Intelligence, Preparation, Power and Leadership. Then, let’s rank Darkseid and Thanos in Formidability. To note, all scores are rated out of a 100.

1. STRENGTH CLASS

Generally, Darkseid is at least Stellar Level in Super Strength. Regularly, he takes on Superman-level foes and either matches or is below Superman in Super Strength.

At the same time, Orion vs Darkseid showed what happens when the two strongest New Gods unleash their power all-out.

With the ALE, Darkseid is in a human body. Due to those limitations, he is still so powerful that we rated his Super Strength as Irrelevant. At the same time, Darkseid is subject to weakness exploitation with the Radion bullet. In Thanos’ case, his only weakness is mental.

On the other hand, Thanos is often stronger than the strongest warriors in the Earth-616 Universe. In Infinity, Thanos takes on the strongest heroes without the IG: Hulk, Hyperion, Thor.

With the IG, Thanos takes on the entire roster of Marvel’s heroes with just the Power Gem. Hence, he has access to Infinite Super Strength.

ADVANTAGE: THANOS

2. INTELLIGENCE

In the Intelligence department, Darkseid is among the most intelligent beings in the DC Universe.

As a New God, he has access to the Mother Box, the Father Box, the Hellspores, and not to mention he rules the entire planet of Apokolips with its advanced tech, armies and defense systems.

In addition, he regularly spies on New Genesis, intercepts its communications with the nigh-omniscient Source. In Death of The New Gods, Darkseid actually decyphers the language of the Source to claim the Soulfire. And of course, at the start of Final Crisis, he claimed the ALE.

Generally, Thanos is a super-genius. In some sense, Thanos is both a space conqueror and a cosmic being. With Sanctuary, his home ship and various other crafts, he can destroy entire planets. In an Adam Warlock story, Thanos threatened to destroy stars in order to win Death.

Though Thanos’ intelligence is cunning, it does not operate on Darkseid’s scale. Indeed, in Thanos: Redemption, the mad Titan was able to intercept Galactus’ files and figured out they had been tampered with.

Of course, Galactus is an abstract on the level of Eternity. However, there is quite a difference of power and scale between the universal Eternity and the multiversal Source, which is the final frontier of the DCU.

ADVANTAGE: DARKSEID

ADVERTISE YOUR AUCTION

3. PREPARATION

In terms of strategy and preparation, Darkseid does not compare favorably. In order to gain the IG, Thanos largely operated on his own by besting the Elders of the Universe and other champions in single combat or by outsmarting them.

Though, it took Thanos a relative short amount of time after discovering the Soul Gems in Death‘s realm.

In comparison, it took Darkseid millennia in order to obtain the object of his desire, the destructive Anti-Life Equation. As a New God, he intervened in Earth’s history, guiding it and planning in order to investigate that secret. And he still failed.

In the end, it took the Death of the New Gods and the destruction of the Fourth World by the Source. Only in Heaven was the God of Evil able to conquer his prize.

ADVANTAGE: THANOS

4. POWER

Really, the gap in power between both is striking. Let’s start with Thanos. With the IG, the Mad Titan has Infinite power and is nigh-omnipotent. To this end, he was able to beat Marvel’s heroes.

At the same time, at full power, he was able to defeat the cosmic entities, including Eternity. What is striking, however, is the fact that Thanos was able to affect only one universe and even Living Tribunal, the multiversal Judge, was not involved.

On the other hand, Darkseid with the ALE threatened all reality. That is, he threatened the entirety of the DC multiverse, past, present and future. All the way to Heaven or the Hyperverse.

More importantly, unlike Thanos’ power dependency with the Gauntlet, Darkseid only had to upload the ALE over the Internet and speak it. Horrifyingly, the Earths of the DC multiverse were being dragged to Hell, by sinking into a singularity. How nightmarish!

In the end, all that was left of reality, was the Watchtower floating in space, where Superman and company made their last stand against Darkseid and his forces, even Mandrakk.

ADVANTAGE: DARKSEID

5. LEADERSHIP

Unquestionably, Darkseid wins in the leadership department. In his case, you actually have to beat him and be more powerful. Only Darkseid has succeeded in opposing everyone against Superman at the end of Final Crisis.

With the ALE, the infected are an extension of Darkseid’s will.

In Thanos’ case, hubris undermine his leadership. Notably, despite having attained supremacy in the Marvel universe, Thanos was still challenged by lesser beings. Though he triumphed over his obstacles.

Ultimately, Thanos unconsciously knew he was not fit for omnipotence and supplied the means to lose the IG.

Definitely, Darkseid is the Boss!

ADVANTAGE: DARKSEID

#WEDEFENDTHANOS’ SACRIFICE AS NON-CANON

In Marvel Universe: The End (2003), Thanos gains the Heart of the Universe. Eventually, Thanos makes a sacrifice to save the Universe.

With the power source, Thanos effectively becomes omnipotent. Though the act is admirable, let’s list the reasons why the story is non-canon.

5. AKHENATEN

To begin, the first apparent reason is the changed history of pharaoh Akhenaten. Indeed, the basic elements of his story remain the same as Earth-616 continuity. Importantly, he was pharaoh in Egypt and was born in Thebes.

Then, he married Nefertiti. Outrageously, he stopped the polytheistic worship of Amun. Instead, he imposed the monotheistic religion of Aten. Due to his blasphemy, the gods of Egypt cursed him. After, his history diverged.

In 1334 B.C., while in the Valley of the Kings, he was taken by aliens known as the Celestial Order to be one of their chosen representatives. Initially unable to grasp his situation, Akhenaten was driven mad. Upon regaining his wits, Akhenaten was taught of the Heart of the Universe, a powerful cosmic artifact that would turn those who possessed it into a living god on par with the most powerful cosmic entities in the Marvel Universe. His mind danced with insanity for nearly 2000 years as he struggled to understand the scope of the astral revelations showed to him by the Order. He spent one century to master the Heart’s powers and two thousands years to earn the Order’s trust.

-Amenhotep IV (Earth-4321), Marvel Database

4. THE HEART OF THE UNIVERSE

In the six-issue mini-series, Thanos seeks the Heart of the Universe in order to gain ultimate power. In fact, the Heart of the Universe grants its possessor true omnipotence and omniscience over the universe. After possessing the power source, Thanos defeated Akhenaten.

However, this powerful artifact does not exist in the mainstream Marvel Universe. In fact, it appears it can only act on a specific universe. Though, it allows Thanos to absorb all the cosmic entities even the Living Tribunal, the Marvel Multiversal Judge.

3. EARTH-4321

In question, the reality is Earth-4321. When Thanos gains true omnipotence, his senses are heightened to the astral level. Here, he sees all of Marvel Earth-4321’s history and realizes there is a fatal flaw.

Indeed, the continued resurrections of heroes after tragedies have fractured the astral fabric of the universe. For this reason, he laments the Almighty’s actions whom he has replaced.

2. THE ALMIGHTY ABANDONS THE UNIVERSE

In his awesome omniscience, Thanos realizes the One-Above-All has departed the Earth-4321 universe. And unable to repair the fatal flaw, he elects to act in true Thanos fashion: Destroy the universe.

When the heroes and the cosmic entities realize the Mad Titan’s move, they confront him. But, it is too late. True to form, Thanos absorbs the heroes, absorbs the cosmic entities, absorbs even Living Tribunal, and finally the Earth-4321 Universe.

1. THE EDITORIAL TEAM STATED THE STORY IS NON-CANON

In the mini-series, it appears Thanos has the last word. Though he sacrifices himself in the end in order to restore the universe.

Nevertheless, Marvel’s Executive Editor Tom Brevoort has stated that the mini-series is not part of mainstream continuity. Therefore, it is non-canon.

FOR THANOS: HE SACRIFICED HIMSELF TO RESTORE THE UNIVERSE

At the end of the universe, only Thanos is left. Or so we think. In fact, Adam Warlock and Franklin Richards survived in a parallel dimension. Soon, Adam opens Thanos’ eyes to his foolhardy actions. When he realizes what must be done, Mistress Death appears to both.

For the first time, she speaks and congratulates the Mad Titan. With a final farewell, she kisses her lover then disappears into the nothingness. In order to set the universe aright, Thanos realizes he is the fatal flaw that must finally be extinguished. As he restores the universe, Thanos vanishes leaving no memory of his existence.

AGAINST THANOS: HE DESTROYED THE UNIVERSE

In Marvel Universe: The End (2003) #5, Thanos faces the Marvel Universe assembled. However, the assemblage of Marvel’s cosmic entities and heroes is no match for the Mad Titan.

In his omnipotence, Thanos absorbs the heroes, cosmic entities, including Infinity, Eternity, the Living Tribunal and the universe within himself. Nonetheless, Thanos finds himself in nothingness and grieves his actions.

Super Power Explained: When Fed And When Hungry, How Tough Is Galactus?

GALACTUS POSSESSES THE POWER COSMIC

With his eye-beams, Galactus removes Silver Surfer’s space-born powers, stranding him to Earth. Marvel Comics.

In the Marvel Universe, no being was more feared than Galactus. Recently, he met his timely end at the hands of Thor, in Devourer King. When King Thor became Galactus’ Herald, he was imbued with the Power Cosmic. Namely, Galactus possesses this reservoir of ambient, cosmic energy at an incalculable level. In fact, Galactus’ possession of the Power Cosmic makes him a cosmic entity on par with Eternity, the embodiment of the Marvel Universe. There are other reservoirs of power as well such as the Power Primordial which powers the Elders of the Universe.

Incredibly, Galactus possesses the Power Cosmic at a Universal Level with the potential to create or destroy the Marvel Universe. Definitely, such power is god-like and explains why the Devourer of Worlds eats planets. If the Star-God’s catalogue of super powers is endless, let’s examine his durability.

In other words, how tough is Galactus, when fed and when hungry?

GALACTUS’ POWER LEVEL

In Fantastic Four (1966) #50, Mister Fantastic threatens Galactus with the Ultimate Nullifier.
In Fantastic Four (1966) #50, Mister Fantastic threatens Galactus with the Ultimate Nullifier. Marvel Comics.

In The Galactus Trilogy, Earth-616 is threatened by Galactus for the first time. Somberly, Silver Surfer arrives to announce the end of the world. When Galactus comes to Earth, he clashes with the Fantastic Four. Meanwhile, Silver Surfer meets Alicia Masters. Fortunately, she convinces Norrin to turn against his master. Together, the FF and Silver Surfer are aided by Uatu the Watcher in their battle. When Human Torch retrieves the Ultimate Nullifier from Taa II at Watcher’s directions, the tide changes. In possession of the Ultimate Nullifier, Mister Fantastic threatens Galactus with annihilation unless he leaves.

Since the UN is an artifact on Galactus’ solar system-sized home, it gives an estimation of his power level. Importantly, the Nullifier can lay waste to a galaxy, and destroy a universe. As a result, Galactus relented his invasion. In terms of durability, this means Galactus is at least Galaxy-Level in Durability and Power Level. However, that is not enough to determine his fed and hungry states.

WHEN HUNGRY

In Thanos (2004) #6, Thanos crashes Rigel-3 and Rigel-18 onto Galactus and Hunger. Marvel Comics.

In Thanos: Redemption (Thanos (2003-2004)), Galactus is manipulated by the cosmic entity named the Hunger. In an attempt to rid himself of his cosmic hunger, Galactus accidentally summons the Hunger into the Earth-616 reality.

Though Thanos finds out about Hunger’s machinations, he fails in stopping Galactus. After the Hunger enters this reality, Thanos brings in the big guns! Powerfully, the mad Titan teleports old Rigel-3 into Rigel-18’s orbit. On a collision course, both planets slam onto each other in a cosmic conflagration. In between, Galactus and Hunger are caught in the collision. Incredibly, Galactus survives.

Previously, Hunger had severely weakened Galactus who was in a hungry state. If we estimate Galactus’ durability feat, we can make a comparison. In fact, if we collide two planets the size of Earth at orbital velocity, the work done is at least Stellar-Level in Energy Projection. Indeed, a hungry Galactus is at least Stellar-Level in Durability.

DURABILITY FEAT: STELLAR

Durability: Stellar 58%

In The Last Galactus Story: Chapter Seven (1985), Galactus investigates the disappearance of stars in the universe. Interestingly, he traces it to the Milky Way galaxy. Then, a sated Galactus enters the core of the galaxy. Powerfully, Galactus survives the gravitational force at the core of the Milky Way galaxy without any trouble. Definitely, a feat requiring a Galaxy to Universal-Level durability.

In the issue, it is stated that Galactus survived the previous universe’s destruction. If Galactus can survive the forces of entropy, that puts his potential durability as Universal-Level.

Fan Theory: In The Cancerverse, Mistress Death Doesn’t Exist

FAN THEORY

Thanos faces the Many Angled Ones.
Thanos faces the Many Angled Ones. Marvel Comics.

IN UNIVERSAL AND MULTIVERSAL ANOMALIES

IN THE CANCERVERSE, DEATH APPARENTLY KILLS EVERYONE AFTER A NECROPSY RITUAL

To begin, in Thanos Imperative (2010) #1, the forces of the Cancerverse launch an attack on the Earth-616 universe. Particularly, their objective is to locate Thanos, the Avatar of Death. As matter of fact, their objective is to rid the Earth-616 universe of the concept of Death. In Thanos Imperative (2010) #6, the Guardians of the Galaxy attempt to stop Mar-vell’s necropsy ritual.

In the Cancerverse, Thanos has willingly agreed to the ritual. Aided by the Revengers, Mar-Vell successfully summons Mistress Death. However, she kills all of the inhabitants of the Cancerverse. In reality, Thanos planned the scheme. And when Mistress Death refuses to claim his soul, he vows to destroy the universe.

IN THE CANCERVERSE, DEATH DOESN’T EXIST

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4: Original Sin, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thanos are trapped in the Cancerverse. Moreover, the Guardians possess the Cosmic Cube which Thanos plans to use to free himself. During a battle, Star-Lord impressively kills Thanos with the Cosmic Cube. However, Thanos comes back to life and punches him throuh the abdomen. Eons ago, the Many Angled Ones used Mar-Vell’s cancer to rid the Earth-10011 of Death. In a necropsy ritual, the embodiment of Death was annihilated.

Then, it became the Cancerverse. As a result, in the Cancerverse, every life form is a cancer. As you known, unless irradiated, cancer cells multiply continuously, don’t undergo apoptosis and are effectively immortal. Moreover, Death does not exist there. For this reason, Mistress Death could not claim Thanos. In fact, even the Revengers killed by Death, came back to life. Here, Mistress Death cannot claim souls and her powers extend only to the Earth-616 universe.
