Thanos has conquered the Infinity Gems and become the Supreme Being of the Marvel Universe with the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos snaps his fingers in order to erase half the sentient life in the universe. In reality, he erased half the sentient life in the Milky Way galaxy.

We will use this statement to estimate Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet snap.

THANOS’ INFINITY GAUNTLET SNAP

In ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ (1991) #1, Thanos snaps his fingers with the Infinity Gauntlet to erase half the population in the universe. In reality, in ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ (1991) #2, we find out from Issac’s transmission to Starfox on Titan that when Thanos snapped his fingers, he erased half the population in the galaxy. Since Titan is located in the Milky Way galaxy, we know it is half the population in the Milky Way galaxy.

In 'Infinity Gauntlet' (1991) #2, Issac tells Firefox, Drax and Starlord that Thanos erased half the population of the Milky Way galaxy.In ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ (1991) #2, Issac tells Firefox, Drax and Starlord that Thanos erased half the population of the Milky Way galaxy. AP Photo/Marvel Comics.

In addition, in ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ (1991) #1, Silver Surfer crashes into Doctor Strange‘s Sanctum to alert him of Thanos’ menace. After the Thanos snap, Silver Surfer’s cosmic awareness estimates that Thanos erased “billions upon billions” of lives.1

NUMBER CRUNCHING

Since Thanos erased half of the population in the Milky Way galaxy, we can state that he deleted their genetic information. Let’s calculate the bytes of information in the genomes of all the humanoid races in the Milky Way galaxy. There are 96 races in the Milky Way galaxy. Assuming they are either humanoid or semi-humanoid, we can estimate the bytes of information in their genetic codes by using humans as a reference.

According to BiteSizeBio, the human body stores 150*10^21 bytes of genetic information. Of course, alien races likely contain more or less genetic information. However, since we want an estimate for humanoid or semi-humanoid races in the Milky Way galaxy, we will assume they are more or less human.

Since the Silver Surfer stated there were “billions upon billions” that were erased, we assume the total humanoid population in the Milky Way galaxy is 109 * 109 = 1018 humans.

Information = (150*1021 bytes)(1018 humans) = 1.5*1041 bytes.
Biochemical Energy = (1.5*1041 bytes* 1 day * 1 J/K * 310.15 K)/(24 hr * 3600s * 0.125 byte) = 4.3076389*1039 J/s.

ENERGY PROJECTION

Thanos generated 4.3076389*1039 J/s of energy projection. Thanos had to generate a Galaxy Level of Energy Projection since he likely deleted half the population in the galaxy with 7.80369365942 times greater than the energy radiated by the stars in the Milky Way and Andromeda.

Toggle the Toggle Arrow below to view the calculations.

Calculations for Thanos, ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ #1

Energy in Milky Way and Andromeda = 5.52×10^38 J/s.
Genetic Information In Human Body = 150*10^21 bytes.

Total Information In Humanoid Population = Information = (150*1021 bytes)(1018 humans) = 1.5*10^41 bytes.
Biochemical Energy = (1.5*1041 bytes* 1 day * 1 J/K * 310.15 K)/(24 hr * 3600s * 0.125 byte) = 4.3076389*10^39 J/s.
Comparison = (4.3076389*10^39 J/s)/(5.52×10^38 J/s) = 7.80369365942.

Suddenly, Moondragon senses a star’s detonation light years away. She exclaims: “It has begun!” Suddenly, Adam Warlock arrives at Avengers Mansion. He tells the Avengers of Thanos plan: Resurrected, Thanos in order to win Death’s love, has gathered the six Infinity Gems and plans to detonate the stars. Thor agrees and he talks frantically, he is observed from afar by Beta Ray Bill and Lady Sif, his betrothed. Beta Ray Bill counsels Lady Sif to stay away from Thor but she decides to intervene.

Lady Sif meets with Thor and Thor informs her he has found a new consort. As he points to the Mind Valkyrie, Lady Sif realizes there is no one there and Thor is talking to himself. Sensing foul, Thor hits Lady Sif. A battle follows between Thor and Beta Ray Bill. Seeing that he cannot protect her, Beta Ray Bill gives Lady Sif the Norn Stones and urges to flee to seek allies or even inform Odin. Lady Sif promises to return then she departs. In the cosmic hierarchy, Galactus maintains the cosmic order by consuming the living energy of planets, whether they are inhabited or not. Galactus has a cosmic hunger which is his weakness and his burden as a cosmic entity.

In the previous universe, Galan lived on Taa. Upon surviving the destruction of his home universe, Galan incubated in a Cosmic Egg merging with the Sentience of the Universe. Emerging from the Cosmic Egg, he was observed by a Watcher who realized the tremendous power the nascent Galactus possessed to feed on the living energy of planets but the Watcher decided not to kill Galactus.

Sensing his hunger, Galactus consumed the nearby planet of Archeopia.

Read on!

After emerging from his incubation cube millions of years after the Big Bang, Galactus consumed the nearby planet Archeopia; this was the first world to fall prey to his insatiable hunger. Galactus felt compelled to create a monument to his dead homeworld Taa, which existed in the previous universe, and to the ravaged planet Archeopia.

Galactus used the remains of Archeopia as the raw material from which he created the enormous Taa II. Construction took millennia to complete, due to Galactus’s need to take breaks in search of sustenance. When it was completed it engulfed the entire Archeopian System.

Galactus intended Taa II to surpass any natural world in size, beauty and splendor. Based on accounts from the few beings to step foot in it, such as Mister Fantastic, Galactus easily met his goal.

Indeed, Taa II is so massive several planets and even a star are held captive by its gravitational pull.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND SCORES

This is the ground-breaking storyline in the Thanos series. By showing a repentant Thanos seeking redemption, this comic adds a depth to the character that makes Thanos more compelling. We almost want Thanos to succeed in repairing his misdeeds and when he arrives on Rigel-3 there is a tension that makes us understand the character’s motivations.

This product is well reviewed and has 45 ratings with an average customer review rating of 4.5 out of 5. There seems to be a general satisfaction with the product.

One customer review said: “Thanos has been one of the best villains that Marvel has had. So how about as a hero? After the Amazing Infinity Gauntlet story, as cool as Thanos is, something seemed to be a little off for me regarding his motivations. It makes sense, after finally giving up on ultimate power due to the events of IG, he would be a changed person. Not for the better, in my opinion. However, these stories here were excellent and probably the best Thanos stories since the Infinity Gauntlet. The first 6 by Starlin are masterful with a tale that includes Galactus himself. Then Starlin departed and Keith Giffen (another favorite of mine) takes over. Re-reading it here I see him laying the ground work for the Annihilation Wave which lead to the Guardians of the Galaxy take that people are now more familiar with.”

The reviews were overall very positive with only two negative reviews. One problem cited by one of the negative reviews was the dialogue: “If you like the traditional, comic book-y way of having every character explain the plot via long dialogue or thought bubbles, this is for you. If you like the less wordy, modern method of comic book storytelling, you’ll get bored with this quickly.”

Overall, this comic was very enjoyable.
